Spartacus: "Spoils of War" Review
Undrtaker.
If the Egyptian can kill Oenomaus, anyone can kill anyone
UnderkingsUnderpants.
You do have a point there,my friend.Although to be fair,he was an assassin and Oenomaeus was wounded and off his game.Gannicus is like Oenomaeus minus Theokeles encounter right now so I'd still be suprised if Caesar manages to down him.
sidsutra.
spartacus has become the most stunning show closest to those old medieval epic movies like braveheart , i believe this episode was way better than the last one , which had too much unnecessary stuff like that sicillian puking ,
PunchingTheAir.
Very good episode. Horray for Gannicus evading certain death and another horray for the direction the chose for Tiberius. I find his scenes of great joy.
AugustAPC.
I never felt like Gannicus was done this episode. Not sure why. It just didn't feel like his time. The episode was great, though. We're only 6 episodes in... is this remainder of this season going to have the rebels in this snowy trap? I hope not.
vege3940.
only in the beginning of the episode was i afraid of gannicus falling. from the moment he was reunited with sybil i couldnt see them killing him., cause that would most likely mean her end too, it just didnt seem likely. and although it would be a little wierd to see a relationship between laeta and spartacus i cant help but want it to happen (not really sure why).
HungryGameRat.
I haven't had the chance to see this episode yet and you spoil it outright with the caption under the title which I can see on the main page. Great.
Wilsononetwo.
It was gannicus on his own....seriously how does this spoil that much for you god fkin cry babys.
mr_huggs.
Explain why you would even bother clicking on the review then. Or even getting on the website, which you know reviews each episode seriously, you brought on yourself and I don't feel sorry for you.
HungryGameRat.
Um...i was scanning the front page of IGN for games..something unrelated. And i see the caption "Gannicus blah blah blah." Its a spoiler on the main page. I don't ever click the reviews until after I've seen the episode. This time I didn't have to click anything. It was ruined from the start.
GeneralFiend.
Anyone else find it extremely comical that at the end they are sitting in a camp where snow is falling? Wasn't that city in the south of Italy?? LOL did they flee all the way to the ALPS??
Marauder359.
You might want to do a little geography study before making such silly comments. The Apenines run the entire length of Italy... Sinuessa En Valle... To be "En Valle", you have to have mountains, right? Hard to have a valley without mountains to make it.
ultimatesage.
i was a little surprised by that also.

They probably retreated a great distance indeed, but that was a little much lol.

kkdude2014.
The entire Spartacus show confuses me. not because of a complex plot, but because the asshats that make it couldn't just make season 1, 2, etc, but instead have a different subtitle for each season. blood and sand, gods of the arena, war of the damned... wtf? hows a guy supposed to get into it?
pkmaximum.
That's a really arbitrary reason to not watch the show.
DizzyBala.
Although not bound by history, they are influenced by it when writing the show. For me, Spartacus has to die and he has to be the very last one to die otherwise it's a cop out. Everyone has to die, even Gannicus. Because to live, would be cowardice. It's an impossible write to have these characters survive and still be heroes. I believe the Death Spartacus refers to at the end means everyone, romans and rebels alike. But, it's just a case for him as killing as many as possible. For me, thebest way to end would be Sura holding Spartacus in the same way he held her when she died and whispering his name. On that, the credits.
ChaosFyrestorm.
Goddamn, Naevia has become so annoying. She has 2 lines this episode and I still rolled my eyes at her.
hoangster.
i didn't catch what Spartacus said at the very end of this episode. Did he realize Crassus' strategy of pushing the rebels to no man's land so they would have no choice but to turn around?
Wilsononetwo.
He basically said they are going to march in here and we are going to kill them all.
moebiusstring.
Laeta being turned to bondage didn't make sense.
guardian_owl.
In this time period (an in the show's universe) an unencumbered women is only slightly above slave. the same thing happened to Lucretia in Vengeance, with her husband dead, her father of no note, and no male heir; all her property was forfeit to Rome and she became but a tool for them to command. In the eyes of Crassus she is already of low position but combined with her aiding the rebels is enough to make her life worth nothing more than as a bargaining chip. Not to mention if he didn't rid himself of her in some way, she could of stood as obstacle to him taking possession of the city.
Arcona17.
Crassus...how can you defeat a man that can foresee and shape tomorrow.

Sparticus ? Ceaser ? Are we watching the same show ? If you do so much reading on wikipedia at least get the god damn names right.

The more I see of Caesar, the more I really hope we get a spinoff series showing his rise to power.
CalibanSlayer167.
Am I the only one who would rather Spartacus die? Hear me out, Spartacus is a man with such a a strong moral compass that can you really see him going back to being a simple farmer? Maybe if he and Sura had escaped all the way back in season one but i feel that he has been put on a path of seeing the greater good. I would rather Spartacus die a martyr in a grand gesture of showing his commitment to the cause. Let Gannicus/Sybil have a life or Agron/Nasir. I can see them leaving after Spartacus's death( would say Crixus/Naevia but they can't let things go). I would prefer Spartacus to have a death worthy of a legend cause I can't believe he would give up ever trying to free every slave from chains.
stinkinburrows.
I can't believe how many people from Underbelly are on this show, if you haven't seen Underbelly, go watch it now, it's awesome.
jmamaz123.
i think spartacus could survive. after all his body was never found so he could just leave and live with laeta for the rest of his days (unlikely because it was said he would never "love" another and the fact he hates romans so much but history tells us he may have been trying the escape and save the salves instead of full on war on rome) but would be nice to see him survive some how. also think he could die the slaves burn his body so rome live on in fear. great thing about it is that u can end it so many ways. follow history or don't just leave it with an endng fitting of the series also think sybil may be being used by the writers as a way for Gannicus to change his life (love and open up to someone again), he has shown love of some kind towards her defiantly in this episode. being honest i hopr this series to ends with gannicus or spartacus surviving, just save one please.
Tenchigtx.
Also hoping that both Gannicus and Spartacus survive!
pkmaximum.
I think there is a high probability of Gannicus surviving. Spartacus throughout this season has been consistently hinting at the idea of Gannicus being able to lead the rebels in the wake of his demise. However, Gannicus still sees himself unfit for the task, so it could go either way.
jeonyboy.
Can someone quote the last thing Spartacus said? I heard something like Crassus always expected us to be stuck in the ridge. With his army behind us, something death will follow?

My gut clenches every time Gannicus encounters Caesar. You're good, Gannicus, but even you can't beat plot armor. Glad he's survived so far.
mobhit101man.
Seriously! Ever since this reviewer has planted the seed of Caesar to be the one to do Gannicus in, I can't help but agree and was on the edge of my seat throughout the whole episode thinking he was a goner. So glad we at least have him another episode :(
VanRoberts.
yeah I feel like I've somewhat ruined the show for myself by doing a wiki of the real Spartacus. But the show is still amazing regardless.
SinHasFlesh.
Ya when the creator was making the show, starting with season 1, he basically said "F**k historical accuracy". So the real Spartacus disappeared in battle, that doesn't mean the show will end the same way.
vagrantwade.
I'm sorry but the real Spartacus? The show has already deviated a ton from history. Caesar shouldn't even have anything to do with what's going on. Castus shouldn't have been a black pirate. Crixus is suppose to leave with the gauls for good. I want to see a thousand people crucified as well.
VanRoberts.
WELL FINE VAGRANTWADE ,I'M SORRY, NOT ALL OF US ARE IMMORTAL AND COULD HAVE WITNESSED THIS HISTORY FIRST-HAND. *runs away crying*
Player276.
Possible Spoiler Caesar was involved in the slave rebellion, and served under Crasses (don't know his full roll though), this has been discovered recently. Seeing as they were both old friends, Caesar being one of the men in charge only makes sense. Crixus will still leave with Gauls for good, just look at the episode names. As far as the crucifixion go, im sure it will be there. But why would you want to see a thousand people die a brutal death for no good reason?
Wilsononetwo.
I have to disagree that Crixus leave with the gauls for good, the prior 2 episodes played the viewer upon that fact and then pulled a huge wtf out of it. I believe that either crixus will go with a separate force that Spartacus commands, or Crixus and Spartacus will die as brothers.
Player276.
Possible Spoiler Third last episode is called "Separate Paths", and there are sources that claim that Spartacus and Crixus splitting up could have been a decoy plan to confuse the Romans. Whatever the case, they show played all key parts of the war fairly accurately, so I don't see why they would change that at the end of the 4th season.
Daetrax.
It was closer to five or six thousand people that were crucified.
Yatrix30.
I say to hell with history. Spartacus and his rebels should defeat Rome and live happily ever after. With lots of female nudity.
junpierre.
by Jupiter's cock that was a good episode!
tbone319.
theyre are all gonaa die lol. the only slaves that could potential live are gannicus and spartacus
PinataPlaya.
True. Spartacus's body was never found... if wikipedia is to be believed.
GeneralFiend.
Why couldn't he beat Caesar? Nothing about this show has anything to do with history...I woudn't be surprised if Spartacus beats the Romans
ultimatesage.
i been thinking that it would be a real twist if they totally deviate from history and have him beat them. They don't call him king spartacus for no reason, even crassus calls him that.
MrEpik.
In my opinion, they mean King Spartacus as "king of the rebels".
ultimatesage.
well yea, im just saying it could be a lil foreshadowing.
vege3940.
nah dont think they'd do that
MrEpik.
It would be funny maybe... but really? Spartacus Kills Rome?.... idk man, it´s just weird. And besides, as the season was starting, in a "comicon of sorts" that ign covered one of the writters says that the challenge of the season was to end it without making spartacus fall feel "flat", and at the same time to not rippoff an ending already done. It is on IGN this video.
Xagzan.
Posted some of my other thoughts here: http://www.ign.com/blogs/xagzan/2013/03/08/spartacus-war-of-the-damned-spoils-of-war-review/

That happens whenever I have to take a poop in the most inconvenient places.
Dragunow.
I really thought he was done for when he said he would grab their attention and let Spartacus get away. I don't like the way this is going, since Ganicus is a badass I would like to have in this show, and I hope it turns around to him slaying Ceasar instead :p
jeonyboy.
This season is seriously so good. Side note, I was surprised how Laeta's body was so much better than I thought.
Wilsononetwo.
Yes, yes that bathing scene was stunning. On a side note that slave that was dressing her had a beautiful ass.
DjKrazed.
DAT ASS!...except she had none lol
shadket.
Pfff she had no ass at all.
Wilsononetwo.
I mean from a dating perspective not the big booty porn videos you guys have been watching
nebro.
I agree, Laeta is gorgeous!
NormanBates.
Based off previews, it seems next week may be the time Spartacus and Crixus finally part ways. And Gannicus was already a bad ass, but he's gone to a whole other level this season.
ultimatesage.
crixus and navea need to sit down somewhere. they are starting to act like children, they are like cancer to the whole rebellion. mostly navea though, you would think she would be grateful she isn't rotting in the mines anymore or getting raped. should have left her ass there.
NormanBates.
Well, according to the history I've read, Crixus takes a group, splits from Spartacus, and is killed. Then Spartacus throws gladiator games in his honor using captured Romans as the gladiators. I doubt we'll see that, but it looked like Crixus was leading his own army against the Romans in the preview for next week's episode. My guess, just my guess, is that Crixus and Naevia don't make it through the next episode.
BrockLanders.
Anybody notice how all the naked women on the show look like Brillo Pads were glued to their lady parts? Fake pubes because in these days finding a woman with pubes is like finding a needle in a haystack...

i swear i was just gonna say whats up with their pubes. aint nobody gonna like going down on that.

BrockLanders.
Wow you've taught me something new...good for you sir. I just googled Merkin, and "now I know"....
skillzdadirecta.
At this point if Gannicus loses to Ceaser it will be anti-climactic and unbelievable. I haven't seen anything from Ceasar that says to me he could beat Gannicus one on one. Ceasar lost to Agron last week and Agron is weakest of the four generals and He lost to Gannicus this week. I predict Gannicus is gonna die in some grand gesture of sacrifice for the girl Sybil or he may survive. Crixus, Naveah, Agron, Nazir and any of the others are pretty much toast. And as far as Sparticus himself? I suspect it will be one of those "he's dead but we haven't found his body" things which seems in line with history.
shadowCandy.
And so then his legend shall expand to rival the God's themselves. My heart swells at thought of fallen brother, yet it rejoices to know of Romes impending disgrace. So bestowed by Sparticus himself
DrFronkensteen.
I have to agree with you. I feel like I'm the only one that thinks Gannicus will survive. I mean I get the whole Caesar theory but I just don't think it wil happen. If he does die it won't be one on one because I don't think anyone can actually take him out that way except maybe Spartacus. It would be in a blaze of glory in some big gesture. But yeah, everyone else, they gon die.
Wilsononetwo.
Here it is. Gannicus will ride off into the sunset with Sybil(after Cybil finally learns how to become a warrior). Spartacus will die in an epic last stand with Crixus by his side. Crassus will die by Tiberius' assholish hand and Caesar will probably give the fatal blow to Spartacus. The writers of this show have an uncanny habit of giving the viewer exactly what they want, but its like they screw with you first giving you false hopes and distractions. But every one of us knows, we want to see Spartacus and Crixus die in an hour long epic roman blood filled symphony of death....and I really believe we will get it.
Marauder359.
Hard for Crassus to die now... he hasn't even been Consul, nor formed the first triumvirate with Pompey and Caesar, nor gone off to lose his head to the Parthians 20 years after these events... Gannicus could survive, contrary to the historical record, but only because he isn't Marcus Licinius Crassus, for crying out loud.
Wilsononetwo.
Im sorry but knowing this show, anyone can die regardless of history.
Marauder359.
An odd claim... Where have they diverged majorly from the proper historical account? And don't say the inclusion of Caesar, because if you don't treat me like an idiot, I won't have to point out that including something that isn't historically recorded is different than deviating from known history on known subjects... conjecture isn't a violation, that's what makes historical fiction... violation of history is what makes something pure fiction... and that's not this. But, if I'm mistaken, and there's actually something you think they've done to alter things, I'm honestly curious what it is.
jeonyboy.
Didn't Ceaser fight against two guys, not just Agron?
Thribs.
He did.
MrEpik.
I see your points and i agree that Gannicus is a much better warrior than Ceasar... Honestly i don´t know if Spartacus himself could beat the Celt. Ceasar lost to Agron in a 2 vs 1 if you´re talking about the battle at the gate... the Gladiator that died in this episode was there by his side and honestly Ceasar hold for quite a while. But Ceasar can cheat... and he strikes me as pretty resoursefull. I think you´re into something in your theory of Sybil. I still think Ceasar will kill Gannicus... But that doesn´t necessarily mean he is the best fighter... it might not even be a 1 vs 1 or maybe gannicus could even be injured as the battle starts.
domino_d.
I agree with your Spartacus assessment. I don't think we will see him die but we will be given the impression that he did. I just cant see the show ending with his death. It would be such a "downer" of an ending. I think the other rebels, minus Gannicus will die as well. I somehow see Gannicus getting through this alive. I have a feeling that Crixus and Naevia will not make it past next weeks episode.
ninja1198.
i think crixus is weaker personal but anyway I agree completely Caesar fights like a pussy

I hereby declare Gannicus as the baddest man in all of the republic!!!

Its about time you give Spartacus its glory I was expecting a 9.5 but it's cool. This Gannicus centric episode gave me flashbacks to Gods of the Arena. Epic episode I loved it

Man this episode was good. It felt like it kept going and going and going which when I watch Spartacus is never a problem for me. I was surprised to see a single character driven story after such a big event but I was glad that they had time to give Gannicus some more time to shine( I would really like a Gannicus travels show based on his time after the ludus). I would say that he impressed but to be honest he could walk on water and I wouldn't be surprised, hell he already seems to turn water into wine wherever he goes. When he left the city and turned to throw down the medallion listen to the music it gave me a Pirates of the Caribbean feel to it I was expecting him to say "You will always remember this as the day you almost caught God of the Arena Gannicus Sparrow". Can't wait for the rest of the season I really loved the Laeta and Crassus talk where he said two sides both feel the hero but let history decide. I always comment on how this show is always in a moral dark area like many wars seem to be but it was nice for him to acknowledge that maybe if he was in Spartacus place he would be doing the exact same thing if he was a slave and Kore was killed. Amazing episode thank you Chris for finally showing some love to Spartacus. Long Live the Bringer of Rain!!!!!

Why didn't Gannicus dress like a Roman and walk out?
Wilsononetwo.
Because then they wouldnt be able to have him slice Caesar and escape in an epic horse riding scene duh.

What reason would a Roman soldier have for walking out of the gate at that time? Also the robes that Gannicus put on concealed his face. Lastly, after Gannicus slaughtered the pirates, there were no roman soldier uniforms within reach, only the robes left by the pirates' corpses.

Plus, you know, he'd have had to cut that hair... and that wasn't happening.

IGN should review Banshee or is it a little too Pornish???
shadowCandy.
Bro, Bro. This is a Spartacus article. A great one too. Don't ruin it by mentioning other shows
GeneralFiend.
Yes they should...Banshee is way better than this season of Spartacus
Undrtaker.
I hope the White Walkers don't kill the rebels next week

I will be pissed if Caesar kills Gannicus, we all know he's far less skilled than Gannicus. Gannicus is in Spartacus' league, and most of their elite gladiators are more skilled than Caesar; I'm not speaking of the Generals, because their skills are far superior.
Kvothe_ModTech.
I will be as well. It just wouldnt fit, Gannicus is far more skilled that Caesar, but I fear that it how it will end for Gannicus.

One thing that I did not expect is how well this show is portraying the roman army, considering the nature of the show, of course. The wall at end was brilliant. Roman soldiers were builders with no match in pre-modern warfare. And that wall would be a small effort considered all they have done.

This episode is about an 8.5, last weeks ep was just far too intense and deserved a 9.1 at least! not our fault the reviewer has bad taste and did not like Agron complaining (was less than a few secs)
Starforged.
are you kidding. This guy has given this show nonstop high scores and you are actually bitching about it. Unreal..

Fire poker through the throat. Suicide by sword through skull. This show delivers on deaths every episode.

This series is getting better and better with each episode that closes in on the finale. I wait eagerly every week to see it's continuation. With that said, I would also like to point out that Gannicus is, hands down, the most badass of the rebels. I liked him since "Gods of the Arena" and he still continued to be my favorite throughout the second and third season.

Love this show so freaking much :D

Ahhh jupiter's cock what an episode that was
bstolemyremote.
The Gannicus stuff was great - it finally gave Dustin Clare an opportunity to build on the audience goodwill and try his hand at a bit of leadership. Considering Sparty was on the sidelines for the most part, Gannicus totally commanded the screen. The Sybil stuff was blah, though. Our take: http://wp.me/p2MfmI-2j9

Selling off Laeta may have also been part of Crassus' plan to take Sinuessa for himself. She was the only noble that still survived, so once he got rid of her then nobody else would challenge his claim to it.

Thumbs up if you want to see Laeta's boobs (roman woman who was Spartacus's prisoners in last few episodes).
Kvothe_ModTech.
You did see her boobs when she was being bathed...and they were awesome! Her body is smoking hot.

Their backs were not "literally" against the wall. For That to be true they would have to line up and push their backs physically against the wall, hence "literally" backs against the wall.Â
Marauder359.
So... their backs are against the moat, which is against the Roman wall? Does that work better for your literal sensibilities?
vagrantwade.
Do you know what "against" means?
Marauder359.
So, they're in camp... Spartacus walks over to the moat and looks at the wall. If their front is the path they entered upon, then their backs are against that moat, which is adjacent to that wall... Do you know what it means?
helvetiaking.
What an amazing episode! Gannicus is just such a badass! I love the look on his face when threw the medallion down looking at Caesar. Also, I love when Gannicus got back to the rebel camp how him and Spartacus are like best bros now with the hug.
UnderkingsUnderpants.
Oh man,I think Gannicus has become the golden boy of the show.Everybody frakking loves him!Although Ceasar is a good fighter,I don't think he would be the one to kill Gannicus...although there could be a scene like Gannicus is all wounded and tired from saving everybody's ass, then Ceasar comes and finishes him or whatever. And who else thinks Spartacus will pull a Batman at the end of the show? You know, the 'Oh he's dead but we never found the body and it turns out he's secretly alive and on the run'?
