this is not good and from the looks of Gears of War Judgement their going with a silly tone. I was hoping Gears was going to capture the tone of Gears 1,2,3, commericals and have a more darker tone. the impressions I get from Judgement is it going to be silly over the top like Bulletstrom which sucks. This series would benifit from a more serious take on the material such as what they did with the amazing new Tomb Raider game.

*SPOILER ALERT* How is GOW2 & 3 not as dark and gritty? The death of multiple characters from GoW 2 was really depressing. Especially Dom's wife Maria. Then even more on GoW3 with Dom's death and the way he went out. And final scene with Marcus losing a "brother" to find his father only to have his father kill himself in order to win the fight.. not that much of a happy ending

Let me go trough this quickly: Maria dies :(.....Tai dies :(...youre right Gears 2 is dark and gritty (i had completely forgotten that). Gears 3: Dom dies with a big efffing bang that last TOO LONG, thats not dark, is pure pirotechnia...Then we have a fresh presented character that was supposed dead, dying "heroically" in the end. NO, sorry but Gears3 was a terrible end for the trilogy. But yeah. Gears 2 was good.

A death is a death. Especially of that of a main character like Dom. Going out to protect his squad and his brothers. I believe that's a good way to darken the tone. And although we never saw Adam Fenix throughout the trilogy, it still was a bit depressing because we weren't connected to Adam but with Marcus. Losing two key components in his life. We never saw Maria until GoW2 but we felt somehow connected with Dom's pain because we associate with his pain than the fate that landed on Maria. Both brothers lost someone that was in their hearts. I felt more for these characters than with 2/3 Carmine's deaths

Judgement does have a Bulletstorm polish to it, colorful and comedic. Gears did evolve to be more colorful over the years though, all the maps in 1 were almost monochrome. Then 2 brightened it up a bit with Jacinto and brighter armors. Gears 3 increased the saturation which isn't all a bad thing. However Judgement just feesl different already under new leadership. TDM is now blue COGs vs. red COGs, not red Locusts. That was the defining universe of Gears...COGs vs Locusts.

Compare it to something like a new Halo, COD, Uncharted etc etc and it seems to have had none of the hype or excitement (regardless of your feelings towards those franchises). And this is two games after the first came out and was a critical, commercial and public love affair.

Why do I get the feeling Epic signed some sort of exclusivity deal with Microsoft where all IP's will be Xbox exclusives for the foreseeable future? Obviously if that's the case, they'd retain the right to license Unreal Engine as they see fit.....When C. Is that really any different to Sony? They don't want to share anything they don't have to in order to try and make money. The only difference is Sony tends to own the studios and Microsoft is trying to lock down exclusivity with independent companies. Lets face it MS, Sony, Apple, etc would all exclusively license you the oxygen you breath if they could.

Sucker Punch even took 3 years making the first inFAMOUS game and Sony offered to give them more employees but they said no and Sony didn't push the subject any further. Media Molecule said they wanted to move on from LittleBigPlanet, Sony is letting them. Insomniac and Quantic Dream aren't owned by them but they gave them freedom to develop for whoever they want to and those developers have been very loyal to Sony as a reward. As opposed to Bungie who sold the rights to one of, if not THE, best selling franchises in the industry just so they could escape Microsoft and stop making Halo games. Then the obvious implosion at Rare. Ensemble studios anyone? They made the great Age of Empires game but they make a game that has the Halo name slapped on it and they are shut down. The guys who made Crackdown. Microsoft forced a bunch of other studios to make 2 with them and effed the whole game up, should've just trusted them with their own damn game. Now Epic is coming undone but we have no idea if Microsoft is behind this so I won't jump to conclusions.

And certainly at the launch of the Xbox and PS3 the Sony exclusives looked a little laughable compared to what you could get on the Xbox (Halo, Bioshock, GOW, Forza, Mass Effect, PGR3, better versions of games like the Orange Box) but gradually Sony seemed to have tilted the balance the other way. Whilst I'm no fan boy I definitely prefer my Xbox to my PS3, but I must admit I'm a little concerned about what MS can possibly conjure up to rival what Sony seem to have to offer. The only thing I can think of that would make them a clear "winner" at this stage is if they turn up to E3 and announce Half Life 3 as an xbox console exclusive, and that's just not going to happen. I think you're probably painting a slightly rosy picture of reality, I doubt that Bungies only reason for their actions was MS, Ensemble was handed one of the world's most lucrative franschises, so I don't see how you can blame that for its demise, and I'm sure that all of the studios that you mention have financial incentives to remaining with Sony. Also Sony shut down Psygnosis/Sony Liverpool so these things occur in both companies. But all that said it certainly seems like at the moment Sony is more willing to take a bit of creative risk than MS is. Or to put that another way, MS might be happy to take creative risks, but it's difficult to see what studios they have at the moment to take them.

Oh yeah, from 2005-2007/8, Microsoft for sure had the better exclusives and is why I got a 360 first. ME, Bioshock, Call of Duty 2, PGR3/4 and the promise of Alan Wake. But that changed in late 2007 and 2008 for me. Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, MGS4 and LBP swayed me over to PS3 and now I definitely prefer Sony to Microsoft. As for the Bungie subject, they wanted to stop making Halo games and Microsoft owned them so they got to decide what they wanted to do. I heard rumors that they didn't even want to make Halo Reach. And with Ensemble, they weren't handed the Halo franchise, they literally finished an RTS game that Microsoft forced them to change to become a Halo spin-off and like reiniat mentioned, Bungie started bringing the micromanagement hammer down on them and when the game underperformed, Microsoft dismantled the studio after forcing them to make a game they didn't want to. Oh and Peter Molyneux (that how you spell it?) left his own company too to go work on other stuff, but whether that is good or bad is debatable. I've grown to dislike Microsoft a lot over the past 4 years and really side with Sony despite their garbage marketing that I only care about because it causes studios to close down when they mishandle their games (Zipper, BigBig and ending their relationship with Superbot). I will say that people don't communicate as much as they do on Xbox which sucks but the online communities last way longer. LBP 1 and 2 are still highly populated and even SOCOM 4 which most people don't even like. I don't know, I'm waiting to see what Microsoft has in store for the next generation but seeing where things have gone recently with Xbox, I'm not enthused but we have to remember that 360 was strong with games years ago.

Yeah I got a PS3 for Heavy Rain and Uncharted 1&2. Haven't played much else on it to be honest. I'll remain with the Xbox until it becomes totally illogical to do so because I really hate the PS controller, always have. The Bungie/Halo/MS story is a bit of a weird one, and everything we're saying is all conjecture. Yes, Bungie said they felt they were done with Halo, but they also developed ODST and Reach after going independent. Perhaps that was part of the terms of the negotiation, who knows. What I don't understand is why MS, who owns Bungie and the rights to Halo, would allow the developer to shear off and be independent at all. Presumably if they had so much control they could have just farmed Halo out to 343 and let Bungie try whatever they wanted. Lets face facts, Bungie are making Destiny, so its not THAT different from Halo, I'm sure MS would have been happy to have let them get on with it. Like I say I'm just sure there's more to the story than we know. NB nice to have a conversation that doesn't involve flaming.

Actually, YES the only reason for Bungie to abandon their beloved Halo was Microsoft pressure and control over the projects. But the Ensemble problem is also fault of Bungie, they put to much pressure on them because they didnt wanted something ugly with the results....And then they concluded that it was a good spin-off, but Ensemble died. I bought a 360 for this gen and besides from Halo (not including Halo 4) i regreted this, next gen im coming back to the Sony realm, or buying a PC rig (or the SteamBox). And most of my dislike for the actual 360 is also for the community, 360 gamers are a bunch of consumers who doesnt play games that are 1 or just 2 years old, they only gather over the next Halo, Gears or COD, till the new COD goes out...Then they only gather to COD....

I'm surprised you say that you regret the decision to buy a 360. Frankly I think that there's been remarkably little to choose between them, other than a few niche interest games. Take ~4 games from each console and port them to the other and I think they're pretty much equal. I think the criticism of 360 gamers is pretty short sighted. I've seen plenty of people playing older games I guess it just depends on what you're after. By definition any gamer on any system is a consumer, but that's not necessarily a fault. I'm sure that there will be a lot of people who only hop from one COD to the next on both systems, likewise there are still people playing Forza 4.

There are a lot of differences between the PS3 and Xbox 360 man. PS3 has a ridiculously large amount of exclusives and most of them are really good. They have HD collections that others don't have like Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia. The online is free, PS Plus, the online COMMUNITY, not the online itself, isn't as social though. The netflix doesn't require a subscription to Sony to use and the layout is better with better graphics for their streaming. Blu-ray, along with cross play for a few games. Something I enjoy is that I can buy PSP or Vita spin offs of my favorite franchises and store the data on my PS3, collect Vita trophies along with my main trophies and the great selection of PS1 games. They are finally starting to add PS2 games and all the good Rockstar games are getting on there. XBLA probably has more good arcade games but PSN has some really awesome ones. NOt to mention the minis, Playstation Eye and Move games you can get which aren't great but they are there. I personally like the controller but I have been using it for like 10 years consistently but I think it's a matter of personal preference so whatever. If you prefer a more streamlined Crossbar then PS3 is for you, I personally hate all the ads on my 360 (which just broke for a third time too; disc drive can't read discs anymore). There is no cross party chat for PS3 and the motion gaming base isn't as large as 360 if that's what you are into.

Not sure I agree to be honest. Naughty Dog is on its second new IP no? Microsoft has released 6 Halo games this generation (Halo 3, ODST, Reach, Halo Wars, Halo: CE Anniversary and Halo 4), and one of those was a remake. Or put another way, since 2007 there have been 3 Uncharted games, and 2 spin offs. In the same time, 4 actual Halo games, one spin off and one remake. I don't think either franchise feels 'overraped'. Whilst that's quite a few, I can't think of any other MS franchise that has similar numbers, and it's not dissimilar to what God Of War has seen across several platforms, which is up to 7 I think? And I've lost count of Motorstorm games. It's not like we're talking about COD, FIFA or Assassins Creed!

Uncharted started this generation though and it did a trilogy. There was a vita game and a vita card game, the card game isn't canon, costs $5 and is essentially a cell phone game so that doesn't count really. While there have been 6 Halo games this generation and two on the last. But, one is a spin-off, one was an overpriced remake and one was an over-priced expansion. God of War has only had 2 PS2 games, 2 PSP games, 2 PS3 games and three collections, two of which were half price to begin with and the last had 5 games in it but I can't remember if it was $50 or $60 when it came out, which is still a steal. So not really the same thing at all. As for Motorstorm, it started on this gen with 3 games for PS3, a PSP/PS2 game and a Vita/PSN game. The difference being that all of these Halo games have been for the Xbox 360 and all been $60 even though two of those should have been $30-$40 max. Uncharted had 3 games but a portable spin-off, that gives it a ton of more variety in my book but it's just an opinion. I think Halo is oversaturated with 6 games on one console, none of which are portable or were priced lower or anything.

I was hoping Gears was going to capture the tone of Gears 1,2,3, commericals and have a more darker tone. the impressions I get from Judgement is it going to be silly over the top like Bulletstrom which sucks. Then even more on GoW3 with Dom's death and the way he went out. And final scene with Marcus losing a "brother" to find his father only to have his father kill himself in order to win the fight.. not that much of a happy ending

Gears 3: Dom dies with a big efffing bang that last TOO LONG, thats not dark, is pure pirotechnia...Then we have a fresh presented character that was supposed dead, dying "heroically" in the end. NO, sorry but Gears3 was a terrible end for the trilogy. But yeah. Gears 2 was good.

A death is a death. Especially of that of a main character like Dom. Going out to protect his squad and his brothers. I believe that's a good way to darken the tone. And although we never saw Adam Fenix throughout the trilogy, it still was a bit depressing because we weren't connected to Adam but with Marcus. Losing two key components in his life. We never saw Maria until GoW2 but we felt somehow connected with Dom's pain because we associate with his pain than the fate that landed on Maria. Both brothers lost someone that was in their hearts. I felt more for these characters than with 2/3 Carmine's deaths

Judgement does have a Bulletstorm polish to it, colorful and comedic. Gears did evolve to be more colorful over the years though, all the maps in 1 were almost monochrome. Then 2 brightened it up a bit with Jacinto and brighter armors. Gears 3 increased the saturation which isn't all a bad thing. However Judgement just feesl different already under new leadership. TDM is now blue COGs vs. red COGs, not red Locusts. That was the defining universe of Gears...COGs vs Locusts.

Compare it to something like a new Halo, COD, Uncharted etc etc and it seems to have had none of the hype or excitement (regardless of your feelings towards those franchises). Is that really any different to Sony? They don't want to share anything they don't have to in order to try and make money. The only difference is Sony tends to own the studios and Microsoft is trying to lock down exclusivity with independent companies. Lets face it MS, Sony, Apple, etc would all exclusively license you the oxygen you breath if they could.

Yeah but Sony gives their studios freedom. Naughty Dog made a high seller in the Jak and Daxter series but they wanted to do a new IP for PS3, Sony let them. Same thing with Sucker Punch. Sucker Punch even took 3 years making the first inFAMOUS game and Sony offered to give them more employees but they said no and Sony didn't push the subject any further. Media Molecule said they wanted to move on from LittleBigPlanet, Sony is letting them. Insomniac and Quantic Dream aren't owned by them but they gave them freedom to develop for whoever they want to and those developers have been very loyal to Sony as a reward. As opposed to Bungie who sold the rights to one of, if not THE, best selling franchises in the industry just so they could escape Microsoft and stop making Halo games. Then the obvious implosion at Rare. Ensemble studios anyone? They made the great Age of Empires game but they make a game that has the Halo name slapped on it and they are shut down. The guys who made Crackdown. Microsoft forced a bunch of other studios to make 2 with them and effed the whole game up, should've just trusted them with their own damn game. Now Epic is coming undone but we have no idea if Microsoft is behind this so I won't jump to conclusions.

And certainly at the launch of the Xbox and PS3 the Sony exclusives looked a little laughable compared to what you could get on the Xbox (Halo, Bioshock, GOW, Forza, Mass Effect, PGR3, better versions of games like the Orange Box) but gradually Sony seemed to have tilted the balance the other way. Whilst I'm no fan boy I definitely prefer my Xbox to my PS3, but I must admit I'm a little concerned about what MS can possibly conjure up to rival what Sony seem to have to offer. The only thing I can think of that would make them a clear "winner" at this stage is if they turn up to E3 and announce Half Life 3 as an xbox console exclusive, and that's just not going to happen. I think you're probably painting a slightly rosy picture of reality, I doubt that Bungies only reason for their actions was MS, Ensemble was handed one of the world's most lucrative franschises, so I don't see how you can blame that for its demise, and I'm sure that all of the studios that you mention have financial incentives to remaining with Sony. Also Sony shut down Psygnosis/Sony Liverpool so these things occur in both companies. But all that said it certainly seems like at the moment Sony is more willing to take a bit of creative risk than MS is. Or to put that another way, MS might be happy to take creative risks, but it's difficult to see what studios they have at the moment to take them.

Oh yeah, from 2005-2007/8, Microsoft for sure had the better exclusives and is why I got a 360 first. ME, Bioshock, Call of Duty 2, PGR3/4 and the promise of Alan Wake. But that changed in late 2007 and 2008 for me. Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, MGS4 and LBP swayed me over to PS3 and now I definitely prefer Sony to Microsoft. As for the Bungie subject, they wanted to stop making Halo games and Microsoft owned them so they got to decide what they wanted to do. I heard rumors that they didn't even want to make Halo Reach. And with Ensemble, they weren't handed the Halo franchise, they literally finished an RTS game that Microsoft forced them to change to become a Halo spin-off and like reiniat mentioned, Bungie started bringing the micromanagement hammer down on them and when the game underperformed, Microsoft dismantled the studio after forcing them to make a game they didn't want to. Oh and Peter Molyneux (that how you spell it?) left his own company too to go work on other stuff, but whether that is good or bad is debatable. I've grown to dislike Microsoft a lot over the past 4 years and really side with Sony despite their garbage marketing that I only care about because it causes studios to close down when they mishandle their games (Zipper, BigBig and ending their relationship with Superbot). I will say that people don't communicate as much as they do on Xbox which sucks but the online communities last way longer. LBP 1 and 2 are still highly populated and even SOCOM 4 which most people don't even like. I don't know, I'm waiting to see what Microsoft has in store for the next generation but seeing where things have gone recently with Xbox, I'm not enthused but we have to remember that 360 was strong with games years ago.

Yeah I got a PS3 for Heavy Rain and Uncharted 1&2. Haven't played much else on it to be honest. I'll remain with the Xbox until it becomes totally illogical to do so because I really hate the PS controller, always have. The Bungie/Halo/MS story is a bit of a weird one, and everything we're saying is all conjecture. Yes, Bungie said they felt they were done with Halo, but they also developed ODST and Reach after going independent. Perhaps that was part of the terms of the negotiation, who knows. What I don't understand is why MS, who owns Bungie and the rights to Halo, would allow the developer to shear off and be independent at all. Presumably if they had so much control they could have just farmed Halo out to 343 and let Bungie try whatever they wanted. Lets face facts, Bungie are making Destiny, so its not THAT different from Halo, I'm sure MS would have been happy to have let them get on with it. Like I say I'm just sure there's more to the story than we know. NB nice to have a conversation that doesn't involve flaming.

Actually, YES the only reason for Bungie to abandon their beloved Halo was Microsoft pressure and control over the projects. But the Ensemble problem is also fault of Bungie, they put to much pressure on them because they didnt wanted something ugly with the results....And then they concluded that it was a good spin-off, but Ensemble died. I bought a 360 for this gen and besides from Halo (not including Halo 4) i regreted this, next gen im coming back to the Sony realm, or buying a PC rig (or the SteamBox). And most of my dislike for the actual 360 is also for the community, 360 gamers are a bunch of consumers who doesnt play games that are 1 or just 2 years old, they only gather over the next Halo, Gears or COD, till the new COD goes out...Then they only gather to COD....

I'm surprised you say that you regret the decision to buy a 360. Frankly I think that there's been remarkably little to choose between them, other than a few niche interest games. Take ~4 games from each console and port them to the other and I think they're pretty much equal. I think the criticism of 360 gamers is pretty short sighted. I've seen plenty of people playing older games I guess it just depends on what you're after. By definition any gamer on any system is a consumer, but that's not necessarily a fault. I'm sure that there will be a lot of people who only hop from one COD to the next on both systems, likewise there are still people playing Forza 4.

There are a lot of differences between the PS3 and Xbox 360 man. PS3 has a ridiculously large amount of exclusives and most of them are really good. They have HD collections that others don't have like Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia. The online is free, PS Plus, the online COMMUNITY, not the online itself, isn't as social though. The netflix doesn't require a subscription to Sony to use and the layout is better with better graphics for their streaming. Blu-ray, along with cross play for a few games. Something I enjoy is that I can buy PSP or Vita spin offs of my favorite franchises and store the data on my PS3, collect Vita trophies along with my main trophies and the great selection of PS1 games. They are finally starting to add PS2 games and all the good Rockstar games are getting on there. XBLA probably has more good arcade games but PSN has some really awesome ones. NOt to mention the minis, Playstation Eye and Move games you can get which aren't great but they are there. I personally like the controller but I have been using it for like 10 years consistently but I think it's a matter of personal preference so whatever. If you prefer a more streamlined Crossbar then PS3 is for you, I personally hate all the ads on my 360 (which just broke for a third time too; disc drive can't read discs anymore). There is no cross party chat for PS3 and the motion gaming base isn't as large as 360 if that's what you are into.

Not sure I agree to be honest. Naughty Dog is on its second new IP no? Microsoft has released 6 Halo games this generation (Halo 3, ODST, Reach, Halo Wars, Halo: CE Anniversary and Halo 4), and one of those was a remake. Or put another way, since 2007 there have been 3 Uncharted games, and 2 spin offs. In the same time, 4 actual Halo games, one spin off and one remake. I don't think either franchise feels 'overraped'. Whilst that's quite a few, I can't think of any other MS franchise that has similar numbers, and it's not dissimilar to what God Of War has seen across several platforms, which is up to 7 I think? And I've lost count of Motorstorm games. It's not like we're talking about COD, FIFA or Assassins Creed!

Uncharted started this generation though and it did a trilogy. There was a vita game and a vita card game, the card game isn't canon, costs $5 and is essentially a cell phone game so that doesn't count really. While there have been 6 Halo games this generation and two on the last. But, one is a spin-off, one was an overpriced remake and one was an over-priced expansion. God of War has only had 2 PS2 games, 2 PSP games, 2 PS3 games and three collections, two of which were half price to begin with and the last had 5 games in it but I can't remember if it was $50 or $60 when it came out, which is still a steal. So not really the same thing at all. As for Motorstorm, it started on this gen with 3 games for PS3, a PSP/PS2 game and a Vita/PSN game. The difference being that all of these Halo games have been for the Xbox 360 and all been $60 even though two of those should have been $30-$40 max. Uncharted had 3 games but a portable spin-off, that gives it a ton of more variety in my book but it's just an opinion. I think Halo is oversaturated with 6 games on one console, none of which are portable or were priced lower or anything.

Yawn, all this gears shit bores me now. You know what IP I think People Can Fly would have done well with...Unreal Tournament. I used to be big into gears but when that's all there is I get sick. Mix it up, we haven't had an Unreal in a while. Sigh...even if they just used Gears playstyle and gave it a Unreal makeover. I don't care just give us something new or different. Not everyone has been playing it since the beginning, I got Blops 2 last christmas and Blops was my first COD. I still enjoy the game but it is beginning to feel like old hat after my second game.

That is a good point Sonic, though no offense, I was calling out to those who buy it year after year. The games play and look so similar to each other I don't know why they just don't save some time and extend the shit out of it with DLC. I guess I'm just tired of buying maps for a game only to have a new one come out the year after making all my map purchases worthless because everyone would have jumped ship to the new game. I guess it wouldn't be so bad if I could at least get a HEAVY discount on maps remade from maps I already have PURCHASED on my account.

I know they signed a deal so m$ gets gears for like ten games, I am pretty sure epic would've been fine with letting someone else make gears like there doing now even tho they own people can fly..They still would get money then let MS sign epic to create a new ip, it would be a win win for everyone ..They would get gears and a new IP without losing all of there most talented devs.. Now epic is a shell of what is was they ade gears in the first place...

Don't get me wrong I like gears 1, 2, 3 but to be honest I have no incentive to buy the next gears game because I'm in post-secondary. At the same time what I do love more are new IPs. We haven't seen many good horror or "real" RPG games for along time now. Watch Dogs is a prime example of what can happen when time and effort is put into a new IP.

yup i getting sick of thinking this but your on to something there dazillt epic is stuck, like Bungey was stuck making halo games and that because we the consumer ("according to sales state") dont like new IP and we want more of the same ( how many call of dutys do we got 12, 13 now or we will get there at this rate) and were on the 4 Gears game too....i so sick of seeing the same game get made time and time, it the same game with the same price point we game last time 60$ and we keep just giving then 60$... GOD help the mainstream gaming industry were not going to see as many new (high budget) game come out...were going to see more " oh this is the same game #3 and this is #5 and this is #10000 of the same game" Maybe thats the reason Mike Capps letf epic he didnt want to get locked into making a 5 greas game or a 6 one or a 7 one because you and me both know whats were its going... GOD helps us..
