This is not a war movie it is about what to do with the emperor after the war had ended and the begins of the 68+ year occupation of japan. General Bonner (ha ha) fellers (The name is funny to me) is to see if Emperor Showa is responsible for war crimes...(then the stupid love story comes)

It was war, the Americans also imprisoned over 127,000 people of Japanese decent taking property, and livelihoods and they were Americans! Reagen, a good man, gave the survivors 20,000 bones to atone for mistake, but still much more was lost in my opinion

Definitely much more was lost. Reagan wasn't a good man for that. 20,000 is a slap in the face. It's like setting aside parcels of dying land to be used as tribal grounds for Native Americans. All it does is subtly remind everyone of what a prick the government is in the first place.

Disappointing. Though, if any readers happened to be interested in the subject matter, I urge you to check out Alexander Sokurov's 'The Sun'. A very cerebral, very Kubrick-like depiction of the Hirohito/MacArthur meeting. Though it is more based on the downfall of Hirohito, it is a very intriguing, almost ethereal watch. I personally think it's a masterwork and criminally overlooked. Even in the art house circuit.

Movies rarely "Flop". If you only count american box office sales it may appear that way, but once you include foreign gross, DVD, Blu-Ray and add revenue...the film will do fine. Besides the budget for this film couldn't have been THAT high. Most of it probably went to casting Tommy Lee Jones.

This doesnt make sense. far as I knew, the Japanese sigened terms of surrender only after the Americans consented to exclude the Emperor or his family from being held in court. Were it not done so Im betting Truman would have happily dropped another bomb on japan's civilian population.
