Community: "...Familial Relations" Review

Community: "...Familial Relations" Review

LeonSALEKennedy.
I dont know what were you all smoking, shirley's thanksgiving dinner part was funny with my favorite line from pierce was "Lets carve this jive turkey"

DaZeppo37.
I loved how dark it got with Jeff's character development.

FusRoDud.
I thought this episode was awesome. It felt a little bit like old community, key phrase "a little." They sure are leaning hard on Abed but Abed is a great character so its alright.

Kpb17.
I thought the Prison Break map on the stomach thing was cool

Balsawood-Man.
My feels weren't ready for the appendix part.

arska1994.
I haven't watched Shawshank Redemption but I know that the hole behind 'Shirley's Sandwiches' poster was a reference to it and I laughed at the Prison Break reference too. While the B-plot wasn't necessary I understand that if the whole group would have gone with Jeff this episode would have been extremely bad. I might be alone here but I thought this episode was one of the best Jeff Winger episodes of the whole series. Best episode of season 4 so far!

pacellic.
Everyone yelled cool cool cool when Abed said it at the end

ElDelEl.
I love Community, but I thought this episode was yet another weak one in an increasingly mediocre season...but then again, I've been rewatching Season 3 episodes from Netflix recently, which maybe sets the bar unfairly/unrealistically high :-). For example, the day before this week's show, I watched the hilarious and touching episode where the dean blackmails Jeff into singing video karaoke at the mall while Britta and Shirley listen to a Christian drifter sing about marijuana, Pierce has paint-fume Liberace hallucinations, Annie moves in with Ape-Ed and Troy, and we viewers are first introduced to the Dreamatorium. Shirley's garage can't possibly compete with that...

adn122.
I love the Big Bang Theory and Community.

goatjugsoup.
bah humbug reviewer, i liked the prison b plot

Lord_Turdsley.
This show just isn't any good. Thanks a lot NBC, you've ruined yet another show.

ChaosBringer616.
Much, much better. maybe things will start looking up from here. I even liked the B storyline.

TheMadcapLaughs.
This episode was a huge improvement over last week. The storyline with Jeff's dad was good, and the shawshank parody had a decent set up but i agree it kind of fell apart by the end. Hopefully this uptrend continues.

Weelious_225.
I think this was actually the best episode on season. ON par with some of season 3, even. Yeah, the B-plot was kind of forced, but I think it shuold have only taken off 1.5-2 points at max.

Lippy17.
Sometimes it feels like people are watching this show now to just find things wrong with it instead of just watching it to enjoy it.

BBossMel92.
This show has really gone down the toilet

rockstar_88.
I wondered how Dan Harmon would've handled the Jeff-Dad storyline. It's always been an interesting loose-end in the series I wish was resolved before he was booted :(

Blubbles.
It would've been interesting, but I was pleasantly surprised with the way they handled it this episode.

rockstar_88.
I haven't seen it yet, but I have no doubt it was handled well. I'm not vocal about Dan Harmon's departure since I don't think it's affected the show to me that much. It's just one of those lingering questions I've always had since the Pierce-hospitalization episode and I would've been interested in seeing DH's take on it.

thatsyurblood.
I dug the way they handled it.

Immortal_Fire.
This shows is severely lacking in funny moments right now. Which is a shame because it was really funny in past seasons.

fractality.
I was a bit surprised by the review, as I saw this episode as a return to form of sorts. My only problem with the B plot was being told how horrible Shirley's family was instead of being shown, but the fact it focused on the group and turned into a Prison Break parody made up for it. I don't think the season has been horrid by any stretch of the imagination, but it has felt a little...off. This one felt like a classic Community episode to me.

MJP12.
completely agree! would have gotten a 9 if Dan Harmon was still the show runner

guardian_owl.
I thought the shawshank parody was a genius, and totally in character for Abed to try too hard to force the reference and then eventually abandoning it to latch onto Prison Break when Shawshank didn't quite fit. I wonder if his increasing disconnect from reality is a portent of things to come later in the season or if it is just being played for a one episode joke. The guy from workaholics was DEH-RED-FI-UL, awful, horrible. His overacting execution of the part was a comedic black hole threatening to suck the enjoyment out of all the scenes he was in. Everything else worked pretty well in Jeff's storyline.

Kyle_Maloney.
These reviews are really on point this season, I don't think Ive disagreed once yet. There's almost nothing else to add except maybe things can get better from here on out. This episode was far from perfect, but was an improvement overall. Still needs more laughs.

ViralOblivion.
Little typo on one of the pros Dad*

EricGoldman-IGN.
Thanks! Just fixed. (Should show up in a minute or two)

ViralOblivion.
And I wasn't trying to be rude as some people seem to think? Just thought you'd wanna know haha

rafa7.
This was the best episode of the season bye far. A 9 in my book compared to the other 4 episodes that were all 6s

kbroxmysox.
Another great Britta line was, "Let's use this rolls to roleplay...HA, I see what I did there"...

QuietstormRB.
I enjoyed this episode but it would've had more of an impact if it actually aired during Thanksgiving. I thought the Shawshank storyline was cool because I definitely could relate to awful holidays with the family and finding was to escape. Britta was awesome. "When I say THERA, you say PIST." LOL!!!

NovaTheDryer.
Really hoping Abed's Christmas prediction comes true.

NCR_RANGER.
DIE HARD CHRISTMAS!

NCR_RANGER.
Adam Demamp is Jeff's Brother. AWESOME!

Scott_Pilgram.
Him throwing roll at Brolin was the episode's high light.

Guest.
Hmmm Jeffs Sad?

Cr7madridfer.
Looks interesting

Eienmatt1.
This is definitely the best episode out of the new season.

ElMasMejor.
I don't know about you guys but I COULD NOT stop laughing after Abed revealed he drew a map of Shirley's house on his stomach XD

blkshp0.
I'll say this, the teaser for this episode is the first time this season felt "right" to me, probably because it took place in the study room. I think they should have done more early episodes in school for this season to ease fans in. That's just my opinion though. Donald Glover's delivery on the line "why did I have to go last?" was classic though.

YoungVillainous.
I thought this deserved a higher score, it was pretty great. It was a really touching episode, and can we please get more of Adam Devine, I would love to see him interact with the rest of the group!

mboehm87.
That Jeff cutting himself for the scar was a big WTF! moment for me.

melbye80.
5 episodes and i have probably chuckeled twice. Sorry, this just good enough

ahmadWR200M.
I enjoyed this one a lot. It mixed silly mile-a-minute jokes and antics with a much darker undertone about characters and their emotions. This episode would have been right at home with past seasons methinks.

BodaciousDerek.
James Brolin is Jeff's Dad and Castles. He's been busy.

EddieDean26.
I have to agree; I thought this was the best episode of the new season so far, at least from the perspective of Jeff’s story. These new guys are getting the heart right (the fake texting, and the box of cards he saved from elementary school? COME ON! That KILLED me!) but still need to get the jokes ironed out. The humor just feels too broad. I was live-Tweeting “Cooperative Escapism” with some of my coworkers from my job at DISH; and they all loved the Jeff storyline. I really dig doing these live-tweets, but I tend to miss a few things, so I tend to re-watch the episodes again by myself. Since it airs during primetime on one of the four major networks it was recorded by my DISH Hopper, and I was able to watch it again this morning before heading to work!

gamesarefunn.
i really don't get why people say this seasom has been bad, the only bad one has been the inspector spacetime episode

MomentaiKing.
The way the characters spoke definitely felt tonally different for me at the beginning of the season. This episode felt quite a bit more like the older episodes in terms of how the characters spoke and acted, I think it's just a matter of them getting a hang of the characters without Harmon. It's consistently been getting better in that sense so I think it will continue to feel more and more natural.

S3govia.
R.I.P.

Personator.
If the next episode is not good, then i will lose hope in this show. I love the show, but this season has just been mediocre.

Linklex77.
What didn't you like about this episode, besides the fact that Dan Harmon didn't make it? I thought it was pretty good, a few hiccups but overall a good episode.

Personator.
What i love about community is how zany and different it is than most other shows. I just didnt find anything special in this episode, and pretty much alot of this season.

Recruit17.
Dan Harmon is rolling in his metaphorical grave

ZiggityZang.
This was a funny episode, it made me laugh, it felt like community, at least an 8 for me. Also, IGN rated big bang theory higher so......I don't particularly have 100% faith in their taste.

EricGoldman-IGN.
Different people reviewing different shows. I have never liked The Big Bang Theory and don't regularly watch it.

d3ltaf0rc3.
Community fan's superiority complex over other shows is so laughably pathetic. It's an ok show, get over it.

cmcb21.
They really Britta'd this episode

Casey_Fish.
Jeff moments were sincere and nice... probably one of the best moments I've seen on this show this year. Chevy looks like he's given up on acting. Some moments seem so forced (Abed monologues/Britta being overly stupid & naive). I think I'm almost done with this show. Incoming 900 thumbs down. Sorry (not sorry), just my opinion.

EricGoldman-IGN.
Chevy clearly not caring or trying is really obvious, unfortunately.

delta169.
Missed the episode! Please tell me was Allison Bree hotter than usual in this episode?

Guest.
I'm a bit anxious to catch any of the season 4 episodes. The past three seasons before it were just so great. Dan Harmon's departure seems like it affected the show negatively.

Linklex77.
Don't listen to the jaded fans here. Season 4 has been pretty good. The convention episode left a lot to be desired, but still pretty good. They are just still upset that Harmon was fired.

Scott_Pilgram.
This season feels like when Grant Morrisson stops writing your favorite comic, you still like the characters and all but the genius is gone and not coming back.

captain_jonno.
This series of community is so bad. It's as if the shows creator had quit

Lukemac93.
And yet the a lot of the writer's of previous seasons haven't so it hasn't had as dramatic an impact as most people seem to whinge about. Funny that.

d3ltaf0rc3.
Can't wait for this show to get cancelled, so Community fans will even be more bitter and jealous about successful shows. Most annoying group of fans ever.

MJP12.
I liked this episode a lot. I would never say this before now, but honestly, I think the reviewer is disliking this episode just because Dan Harmon isn't involved. i could understand some of the other episodes, (like last weeks in particular) but I really thought this was worthy of Community

applegamer.
idk i think community has lost its juice

Thribs.
Die Hard? The Cleveland show already did that. :)

xfbull.
This episode was a bit weird, it got a little better at the end. The prison break story line was just strange, considering you never saw the dinner table. Just seemed like bad scheduling, and a lot of scenes seemed to be cut short. The video editor seemed to have to make a lot of weird cuts because they weren't able to get all the scenes filmed.

koolmike96.
i do have to agree with the reviewer. i think the score is pretty accurate for the episode. the prison storyline wasn't as fleshed out as it could've been and it felt like a bad idea to begin with. i liked the tag at the end though. Shirley humming Troy and Abed's weird song sounded incredibly funny.

marcohtx.
Why are Troy & Britta even together. They never show affection to each other, and shes over with Jeff on thanksgiving....wtf. There's no way that we would know they were together if they didn't have that scene of her sneaking out her room. Abed has probably had more love scenes with Troy than Britta.

Linklex77.
Have we not been watching the same show. The final two episodes of the season 3 was them making googly eyes at each other. The whole first episode of this season when Britta & Troy holding hands, the third episode they had sex. They don't have to be only together all the time. Look at Annie. Annie is an awesome character whenever her storyline doesn't center around her obsession with Jeff. To be honest, with the exception of this episode and episode 2, I don't think Jeff & Britta have had a story together in a long time. Britta being with Jeff for this episode made sense since she's the "therapist" of the group.

FamousLucas.
I feel like half the commenters on here don't actually watch other shows. There is no other explanation as to how they think this season is better than most other comedies on TV.

bmack182.
I'm not sure where I read this... but "community is like a parody of itself lately." It's becoming so stupid and exaggerated that I am starting to hate it. If the makers of Scary Movie made a show called "Community College Show" it would be just like community now.

RyGuy888.
Am I the only one that's been thrown off by the lighting and the sets this season? They feel really fake to me and that bothers me when I'm watching the show. I might be nitpicking but it changed (CHANGed) the vibe of the show

Kidstellar.
I'm still enjoying this show hopefully it gets another season and if not I hope tbs picks it up. Same goes for Happy Endings.

jeayese.
“Car accidents, Tara Reid or the Hindenburg?” - I loved this part! I'm sure they could've thought of more but just throwing Tara Reid in there was pure gold!

GrimmTrixX.
i gotta ask.. why are we getting halloween and thanksgiving episodes in February/march? its kind of making me not enjoy it as the episodes of the show i dislike are always holiday themed ones.

waddlyhobbins.
NBC delayed the air date. Community was originally supposed to air in the fall and these episodes were to actually air near the holidays they are themed after.

GrimmTrixX.
ahh ok. makes sense to me

LukeRigby.

ajjjevans.
At least people know about Community and parks, everyone that I talk to have no what Happy Endings even is.

Chap24.
Goddammit Goldman, another awful review. Anyone who's ever been to an uncomfortably brutal family event would appreciate this. To me, the Shawshank bit was the funniest part of the episode, not to mention this was the best episode all season.

thezekester.
At this point in time it seems like the people who just want to enjoy the show are thoroughly enjoying it (not all the episodes have been great, but like the main topic creator said, a bad episode is better than most of the garbage on TV), but all the people who aren't enjoying the show are finding things to nitpick about because Harmon isn't involved anymore. Any other channel, and any other showrunner, we probably don't hear about any of this and these episodes are liked quite a bit more.

Hectic105.
I think it's different depending on the type of show and the amount of actual involvement of the show runner. One thing that always set Community apart was that there was kind of a unique voice behind the series (if that makes sense) and now it's gone. Not that it can't be good without it, it just has a different feel, and it's more noticeable than I was hoping it would be. The other big thing was the reason why Harmon was canned. Because the network didn't like the style of humor and wanted to appeal to a 'broader audience'. Whether that's good or bad is up to you, personally I usually end up not liking things that go that direction, but I still give them a chance. I'm giving this season a chance and keeping an open mind, but it hasn't impressed me thus far. The first episode was definitely promising though, and there have been bright spots, but there have also been some lamer jokes than usual as well, so it's hard to say. I think I'll hold off judgement until after the season's done (or the series if NBC decides to can it too).

Streig.
I am definitely not enjoying the current season. Look, I came into this thing knowing that it was going to be different, but I was prepared for the change. The shawshank redemption thing sounded good, and I was excited to see where they were going with it. Turns out, they weren't going anywhere; nothing came of it. This episode didn't compare to the repeat of parks and rec that aired right after it. The show isn't as funny as it once was. When there are other, better comedies on tv, why should I settle?

sm00bz.
"...And then Pierce did whiteface over blackface. No-one was amused."

kbroxmysox.
I tried to getting into Happy Endings but couldn't...Itj ust felt like it was trying to hard...and the characters weren't very likable. So yeah...I guess I understand how some people feel about Community(not me!)

darklink701.
I've heard of it because my girlfriend watched the first season. She hasn't had time to catch up. I'm about to watch it too!

The_Hokage.
The first season was great, But I stopped watching the new season after 4 episodes...it got bad real fast

NeBuLa_39.
are you talking about Happy Endings? because the second season is substantially better than the first. It's one of those rare shows which has only improved each year.

eefromr.
i wanna watch parks and rec but hulu doesnt have season 1 up and i just found out it was a commedy. FWP

darklink701.
Yea if you watch Parks and Rec and decide to watch season 1, just get through it so you can get to the good stuff which is season 2 onwards. It gets better and better!

81jono81.
season 1 is horrendous anyways. Things get amazing around halfway through season 2.

ajjjevans.
I actually watched 4 episodes of the first season when it aired, and i stopped because it was terrible. It was only a year or so ago when i went back to it in a later season and it was really funny. I would say skip season one anyway and you will still be able to understand whats going on and who the characters are.

crimsoncaesar.
Indeed, sir.

BloodMeridian.
Allison Brie > Kelly Couco

NCR_RANGER.
Plus she freestyles like a boss.

broda8121.
Sometimes...

Jiopro23.
Kelly Couco? Way to botch the name

nets0999.
He misplaced the o and u. Oh no!!!

JefyyBeaver.
And he got her first name wrong... And spelled Alison's name wrong... But he got one thing right Alison > Kaley

nets0999.
Haha damn I didn't even look at the first name.

81jono81.
And this was a great one. Seriously, this one was HILARIOUS.

SomeRandomTask.
Yup, I thought it was fantastic. Probably the most emotional episode of this series to date, and I mean who was not waiting for Jeff to tell his dad off. Furthermore, it seemed gratifying that Britta was able to witness Jeff finally admit that not having his dad around messed him up big time. Even going on to admit to her that she was right. After that, the dad faking the heart attack followed by "Well, it was a hail mary".... I don't know, I love this show, it definitely wasn't one of the funniest episodes but I would say best episode this season. I still think Goldman is out to lunch on his reviews of this season. That being said, I cannot be the only one who thinks EACH episode of this season has got progressively better than the last. I loved hunger deans, I liked the Halloween episode more, the Study Room episode was genius and felt more like community than the previous two, and this episode topped it off. It is slowly building up, and I cannot wait for each new episode. All in all a GREAT episode of Community IMO.

SomeRandomTask.
Whoa, just re-watched when the Dean comes in as John Wayne at the start, HE IS WEARING JEFFS SHIRT. *Edit* wait its not his shirt, its Jeffs whole costume from when he picks up slater in season 1. LOL. That is why Jeff looks and asks "Is that"? Then the Dean Interupts "John Wayne, Yees"! This show is great, I don't care what anyone says.

81jono81.
Well said! The "Eat Garbage dip" line was one of the funniest jokes I've heard in a long time, too. Inspecticon was definitely a low point, but hopefully the series just gets better and better!

Bane625.
it is definatly the best of the season so far

ProphetGK.
That really isn't saying much

Bane625.
that is sadly true

nets0999.
Not sure if serious? Just like the reviewer said, the B story line was atrocious. I probably laughed twice the whole episode.

Streig.
I agree with you, but this episode just wasn't funny. Putting aside how the show used to defy genres, parody parodies, and make cliches fresh again, one thing you could almost always count on from community is that it brought the funny. From what I have seen so far, that can no longer be said. I'll finish the season, but man, I am really worried about this show.

elventourist.
Finally someone who feels the same way I do! IGN keeps giving these episodes good reviews, and people keep leaving positive comments, but honestly I haven't gotten more than 1-2 laughs per episode this season. I mean, even putting aside the high standards I hold Community to, this season hasn't been funny even compared to an average comedy. HIMYM has been making me laugh more, and this season has been HIMYM's worst!

xfbull.
Agreed. Something just feels weird about the episodes. This one "felt" more like Community... I guess. But I couldn't help notice weird pacing and strange edit cuts. It just seems like the energy level is different. I don't care whether Harmon is gone or not, the show just has stopped making me laugh.

smith_immortal.
I am a massive Community fan but this season is actually making me depressed with how bad it is. I am actually sad it might dip into even lower ratings and get cancelled. Please get Dan back!

ChaosBringer616.
Ugh... TBBT. I always catch that show at my barber shop and watching it is unbearable.

thegreatkhali042382.
agreed...but you have to admit Community has taken an ugly turn for the worse this season.

nanaki1990.
seriously its comments like this that makes me dislike the community community as much as BBT is annoying with its on again off again relationships its still an entertaining show please stop with the negativity

raim42.
eh, the BBT is to the point where they're recycling jokes waaaay too much for my tastes. I have been watching the show from day one and honestly it's just not fresh material anymore. I'm not defending Community, don't get me wrong, but BBT really just needs to die with at least a little dignity. On the other hand Happy Endings is still great and I really hope that it doesn't get sent to the chopping block.

JediMasterGabe.
BBT never had any dignity. The whole show is a bunch of jokes based on a nerd stereotype that doesn't exist. And when there aren't any of those it's a lame sex joke. All accompanied by a laugh track that's turned up to 11

therock_rox.
As much as I hate to say it, ABC holding Happy Endings to burn off the episodes in April sounds like it's already done. I guess we just need to cherish the 7 episodes we still have coming.

Mainstream05.
It does seem weird to bring up and drag Two and a Half Men/Big Bang Theory through the mud on a Community review when no one ever, even tangentially, mentioned either of those shows. While we're being honest and bringing up things no one else mentioned to strain to prove a point - I don't understand why people will randomly bring up Transformers or Twilight in comment sections for articles/reviews that have nothing to do with either.

gtmach6.
It's because secretly they watch these other shows. It's mainly to provide backup as to why they "hate" them but they help boost the ratings nonetheless. If people truly liked Community and were secure with that, we wouldn't hear any of these other shows mentioned. But people aren't secure... Hence EVERY Community review board is probably filled with more BBT comments than the BBT reviews themselves......

mainstream05.
I don't know that we live in a universe where that many people are secretly watching those shows and then slamming them in any comments field they can find, but maybe. What's irritating to me is that after a while it just becomes noise. There's no snark left; just obvious slams at shows that I don't care about. I feel that way about several arbitrary targets of Internet hate. The criticism itself has become as annoying, unoriginal, and uncreative as the very things they're hating.

platinum4490.
Because some people don't know how to have a conversation I guess. Or they feel obligated to make sure everyone knows how they feel.

crimsoncaesar.
Don't know why you got berated with dislikes? It feels like because we know Dan Harmon is out, and chevy left later on, we're putting that on the new episodes. We humans have a tendency to see patterns that aren't there. our brain is constantly filling things in with possible delusions and what not. Sort of feels like that's what people have been doing with the new season of Community because of these events. I will admit it's different, but each season is drastically different from the previous.

thatsyurblood.
I don't think it's entertaining, but that a hate post is the most popular...yeah, it's not cool.

DoTheHarlemShake.
I'm still waiting for that turning point. Maybe there will be at least one great episode in our future. It's like the Simpsons; there only seems to be one great episode per season (for the past 10 years).

ArbtheRipper.
You have more than 3 options. Unless you live in some kind of existentialist hell of bad television.

falconbox530.
i would most times, but this season of Community has been pretty bad while BBT has been pretty good.

ProphetGK.
Okay yeah this episode was better than the others but that really isn't saying much.

SongSeven.
*Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men, and How I Met Your Mother. It's not a good show, people. It's passable at best.

GeneralChaos.
What's the matter - BBT not realistic enough... or maybe too realistic?

jeayese.
here here!

Jackie_09.
well said!

origonalname115.
But what about "You ask one person if she's tyler perry in drag and suddenly you're the bad guy" or "we drew a map of your house on abed's stomach" "I know what my house looks like" line? I think this was easily the funniest episode of the season, and a real winner if you ask me. Isn't that the most important thing?

BuckyBrewer.
I agree. This episode had plenty of laughs and heart as well. I didn't agree with how the reveiwer justified his criticism of the episode for not having the entire group meet Jeff's dad over thanksgiving. He says it felt odd, but I feel like it would have been much more awkward and forced if Jeff had met his Dad with the entire study group present, especially for a thanksgiving dinner. Imagine Jeff asking his dad (who he hasn't seen in decades) to join him for dinner along with his 6 friends from community college.

manneatingpie.
People think everything is a competition. If you were to go back to previous seasons and watch episodes again, nothing has changed, it's still the same show, like most shows, sometimes they hit a rough patch. I have personally enjoyed this season so far and the only reason I think I am not laughing as hard is not only because like most people we are expecting too much but sometimes the same hijinx doesn't do it for me anymore. That being said I still enjoy the show greatly and people need to stop whining and jumping on bandwagons saying "this show used to be good" BS because it still is!

RunePyrite.
Did I watch the same episode that everybody else here watched? This in my eyes was by far the best episode of the season. The whole prison escape bit could have been worked in a little better, but it still provided plenty of laughs. Troy's "Why did I have to be third!" moment had me laughing out loud like a maniac, and the whole "Ay-bed gets it" thing with Pierce was hilarious. But the most important thing that this episode did that other previous episodes never really attempted to do was that it focused on character development. With the first four episodes of the season, the writers seemed to feel that as long as they crammed as much random crap into 22 minutes the audience would laugh at the sheer spectacle of it. Family Guy has been doing this for the previous few seasons and it's no longer funny. I felt that this departure into something much more serious was a nice change of pace for the season. Learning about Jeff's disturbing mental issues he grew up with made the episode feel much more real, and if there is anything that this season has lacked so far, it's been those serious moments where the characters are being real and you can sympathize or empathize with them.

crimsoncaesar.
Loved it when Abed had the map on his stomach.

Stumbeling_again.
I agree with you completely. Character development and emotional moments have always been one of the things that set community apart, and I was so glad to see that the new showrunners recognized that. Sure, it's important to be clever and funny, and this episode had it's moments with that, but Dan Harmon created a show that got such a fanatical fan base because people cared about the characters, on top of all the other brilliance. Just like how Chevy held the second season paintball episode with real emotional gripe. I hope to see more episodes like this.

superiorquiksilver.
I thought this episode was boss, finally getting into some long overdue character development for Jeff. So what if we didn't get any laughing out of my chair moments? The ep had great moments and overall it was the best of S4 so far. I liked it, my girlfriend loved it. So I made myself an account and logged in just to say that this review was BULLSHIT.

Icecreamkilla.
Also don't know if anyone else caught it, but when Shirley was doing Troy's humming song at the end. The one he did in the episode with the dark knight dvd, except his was SUPER high pitched.

coray8.
we all caught it, its a running joke

h4x2tehm4x.
That's "Daybreak" from Michael Haggins, and it's been my ringtone for a couple years now.

manneatingpie.
Yes to confirm with the others, watch the old episodes and you will notice that almost everyone hums that song at one point.I think except Jeff and Pierce.....

xfbull.
You laugheded out loud like a maniac at that joke? You laugh easily then. This is not a criticism.

DrFronkensteen.
Pretty good episode. Why wasn't the whole group with Jeff? That's predictable. This show isn't supposed to be predictable so there is no reason for them all to be. For a guy who has been criticizing this show a lot for it becoming too much like a traditional sitcom, he sure expects it to do a lot of things a sitcom like that would do. Oh well, still thought the review was pretty fair but still a little harsh.

pootato.
The whole group shouldn't have been at Shirely's, that wasn't a very good storyline.

DrFronkensteen.
I guess but it was a B plot for a reason. The focus had to be on Jeff and his dad and if the whole group had been there, it would have been ridiculous and just bad. I think the episode was handled very well. I feel like the last two episodes haven't been focused on the comedy as much and I am totally okay with that. I think we all sometimes forget that this is a show with a heart that also happens to have a lot of funny moments. Even when there is less comedy, there is still heart.

pootato.
Yes, but the heart isn't subtle anymore. The chang in Jeff's behavior was really quick, and should've happened, but not as quickly. Also, since when is Troy that retarded and it needs more Chang. Edit: I don't want to say it's bad, but it's obviously worse than before.

DaZeppo37.
Troy has always been retarded. That's why we love him.

Icecreamkilla.
This episode felt more like Community than any other this season

lil_rudeman.
Not that funny of an episode, but I really enjoyed it. Community, for me, isn't all about laughing, but just being a good show that happens to be a comedy. I still laugh and enjoy every episode. I also enjoyed the Prison Break references (the drawing on his stomach was pretty funny)

Blubbles.
Exactly.

ajjjevans.
all good comedies have these episodes, not every episode has to be funny, and this one was not, but it was still a great episode

vaknir.
at least an 8.5

Blubbles.
I really thought this was great. Brolin was perfectly cast, and they pulled off the whole "Jeff meeting his dad" story. It was definitely mostly miss on the jokes, but I liked the emotional stuff. The main problem I had was definitely with the Shawshank parody. It did eventually work out, though (kinda).

wolfypants.
not every episode needs to be super ridiculous funny or even a joke a minute.. appreciate season 1 episode the ones not like paintball or that over the top.. just enjoy the character/story development.. the show needs to grow out of greendale so i can appreciate the new showrunners testing the waters outside of greendale this year, especially we such low # of episodes this year.. even dan harmon said in season 1/2 that this show has a 4 year plan at greendale, and see whether jeff would graduate or not.. i know its scary but we cant stay at greendale forever kiddo

AmateurSalad8.
Ehh, I don't know if I'd agree that this episode was better than the last couple... it kinda felt like it was on the same level. All the parodies seem forced this season. It's like instead of the parody being written as an accessory to the story, the story feels written just to fit the parody.

Pepper_jack.
If this episode was placed in the middle of Season 2, no-one would be any the wiser. Finally felt like a Community episode and it was Hilarious. Was a 9 for me.

MJP12.
yes

thatsyurblood.
Why does the parody have to make sense? Since when is that criteria for a great community episode. I thought this was 9!

platinum4490.
I'm not sure about a 9, but it definitely was one of the better ones of the season so far.

thatsyurblood.
I've watched it twice now, laughed about 3x as much as I have all season.

pinkbombo.
I killed myself laughing at the whole "Batman is gay" situation. Troy always delivers

FledgeFish.
this season is steadily getting better

Joey-IGN.
Enjoyed this episode more than the last couple, but agreed on the Shawshank stuff. Wish it was just focused on Jeff instead. That said, I thought this episode did a great job of bringing back some emotion to the show, plus it had the return of the best "hooray we're friends!" music. You know what I'm talking about.

EricGoldman-IGN.
I do, and man, I wish that were actually the name of the track.

Links_Revival.
I really like the direction that this season is taking. I understand people loved season 3 but I found most of it pretty weak. The last two episodes of this season really remind me of the first 2 seasons of community. Not driven by weird niche genre parodying while still embracing them when they come up. TL;DR The prison storyline wasn't half baked. It was understood that the genre jokes are funnier when complimented with a normal damn show!

Lerkero.
I think the Jeff's dad storyline was well done and ultimately helped by the presence of Britta. It was a tense moment when Jeff's dad implied that he did a good thing when he abandoned his son. It seemed like a very Jeff thing to say but it was about something that is not cool to do. The B-story did seem thrown in and did not provide laughs, but a decent amount of humor.

NCR_RANGER.
I wouldn't be surprised to see them bang again.

protomelvin.
I really enjoyed Jeff's story with his father. I like that it was finally addressed and done right.

Guest.
no matter how much downhill it goes, this show will always have a special place in my heart

MBIIdollabill.
This was a great episode, deserved and 8 or a 9.

hittindatfasho.
First episode this year that truly felt Community. I would have given it an 8.5. Jeff's monologue of his former years hit hard.

thisisjohn.
definitely the best episode this season. i was actually laughing instead of just forcing out a chuckle.

Profound_Sound.
Show me on the dinner roll where the bad man touched you Eric.

Profound_Sound.
This ep was hilarious! Eric I'm sorry but you overthink this show....Maybe you just don't get it or don't care, but somebody else needs to review Community. It's an intelligent show and it's no shocker that you don't appreciate it.
