And how exactly is it going to better than adsense?

I'm hoping they mean no more "One weird trick to [grow penis/get abs/lose weight/get a date]" and other such scammy garbage ads that Google (and Facebook while we're at it) allows "advertisers" to push to their customers. I hope they're successful so maybe it will prompt other companies to let up on the snake oil too.

Matt Coddington I've never seen one of these types of ads on my websites and we serve millions of impressions a month for adsense.
Are you actually seeing adsense ads for penis enlargement somewhere?

"We’ve resisted advertising so far because most of it we had seen wasn’t terribly tasteful." HAHAHAHAHA. Have you seen the tacky misleading fake-video display ads they've been showing on WordPress.com blogs that don't fork over the the "premium" ad-free version of their blogs? HAHAHAHA. C'mon Wordpress. You can make up something better than that.

Seems odd to market it this way. Tell your users that they deserve better but turn around and only give access to a select few. It would seem most of their users don't deserve better.

Think of it like a beta -- we're working with a few partners as we test out the concept and build out our systems, then we'll open it up over time to a wider and wider audience.

There is likely a lot more subtlety in marketing than you are giving credit for. Tough to make a statement like that and then say, "most of their users don't deserve better."

It makes perfect sense. Advertising is not right for everyone. Wordpress' first priority should be to protect their brand and give the most benefit to users. The factors they say will influence this are "“level of traffic and engagement, type of content, and language used on a blog." This makes perfect sense. If you do not have enough traffic or engagement to create meaningful revenue for yourself why would you throw some ads up there and make a worse experience for your users while providing almost no value for yourself or for them? If the things you are writing about (type of content) doesn't lend itself to advertising (people making money from your spa...See More

In other words, they got tired of Google making money off their platform, so they came out with their own ad network to milk some for themselves...

Sorry. I trust Google more then I trust you.

I would be interested to know how you construct your "trust model."

Concentrated and "deep enough" advertiser pools are the game changers for publishers in this market. Publishers, Advertisers and Google all know that this is a problem of running an aggregated model like Adsense that covers every type of content in every type of format - blogs, op-ed articles, how-to guides, etc.

WP and FM are just stepping in to cut out the dilution and increase the quality for bloggers. Seems like we should be slamming them for not doing this sooner.

Not really big news for experienced WP users. We've been using Adsense (or whatever ad program we want) through custom html and plugins since day 1.

So, basically users do not get the ability to sell direct ads to possible advertisers...
They would have find it hard to get a cut through AdSense if they had allowed it.
Going with Federated Media allows them to get a cut. Makes sense.
But considering custom domain is already a paid for service... Never mind.

This is an interesting move, but most of the big blogs that use wordpress are already part of niche ad networks (Complex Media for sneakers/lifestyle, Gawker for gossip, etc.) so I bet the networks will throw their weight around and stop them from using the service. That leaves only small mom & pop blogs getting into the game.

"Automattic’s Jon Burke also threw out an interesting stat in the blog post: apparently, more than 50,000 WordPress-powered blogs come online on a daily basis."

How many of them are made by actual people?

As opposed to fictional people? :) Because we also run Akismet we have some of the best anti-spam in the industry. There are splogs on WP.com, but you'll probably never come across one because we proactively take them down, respond to user reports within hours, and retroactively adjust our signup numbers to take them out.

It is inevitable that WP.com would attract splogs, being one of the biggest networks out there.
That's another reason to keep the entry barrier on the Advt. program. They'd get overrun by spam if they let in everyone.

Though I don't understand why they had to take a dump on Adsense, it just makes Automattic look bad. WordPress rocks - you're better than that.

Unlikely blogger, WordPress will not allow you to publish add unless you have a custom domain and high quality blogs. Blogger support add to blogspot.com domain too!

Still the program seems incomplete and biased. Even great blogs haven't gone custom domain, and are not written in English.

The approach is a bit awkward...trying to bash competition by comparison notes doesn't seem like an effective way to succeed. And the limitations just do not make sense...your forcing your customers to pay for custom domains when they already give you consistent free advertising! Not sure if WP really thought this broadcast out! The announcement could've been more subtle!

Perhaps it might be an exaggeration to refer to the post as bashing. Every product deserves a good enemy and it seems as though they've approached the battle in a fairly respectful manner. Are you going to step into the ring against the larget revenue producing product of one of the world's largest company without at least saying game on?

Find it sad that companies want to make their products seem better by undermining an existing leader in the space. It's easy to say "we're better than X". It's another thing to prove it.

If you really have something different, then you don't need to compare it with an existing product!

More power to them. Anything to give webmasters an alternative to adsense is a win.

Love to see this! I have long thought that a service like this would be extremely beneficial to so many bloggers. This is a great outcome from the Lijit acquisition.
