"those of us who aren’t enjoying the liberties of the USA"! what liberties perhaps are these that those of us outside the US cannot enjoy? Is it the grinding debts that you cannot possibly live without so you can buy the next eye candy toy apple comes up with even though there are countless cheaper alternatives. This statement reeks of immature biases that I wont even dignify with a definition. I find it hard to believe any balanced individual claiming to be any kind of journalist came up with this. I am sure there are those who can still find it possible to make an analytical argument about another analyst -which you didn't do at all- without giving in to childish wholesale fan boy-ism...you just aren't one of them. Its a pity!

There are actually countless others who do not have the same liberties as the United States. Is that really up for debate? Have you ever been to the nations where women are not allowed to drive? Have you been to the nations where if you are born into poverty it is almost impossible to escape it? To act as if there are not liberties in the United States that others do not enjoy seems to be turning a blind eye to the millions of people who don't enjoy the liberties that we take for granted.

Yes, the United States has a TON of company now when it comes to liberties, but please don't act like the entire world is liberated when over a billion people live in a country (about a seventh of the world) where you get put into jail for speaking out against the government.

So when you ask "what liberties perhaps are these that those of u...See More

I believe that RIM could very well pull out of this broken stage they're in now, but it'll require the same move that Apple made, namely, a change in leadership.

Agreed, but who will be the Steve Jobs of RIM?

Rayyan Ahmed You know, this might come as a shock, but I think they should seriously consider Tony Fadell. http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/10/nest_thermostat/all/1

"Come to think of it, Apple was a pretty broken brand in the 90′s, and found a way to pull itself into glory."

D'ya think? I wonder if that was his whole point. I'm guessing that he's suggesting that people (i.e. markets) often over-estimate how much trouble a brand is in, particularly when they can't see outside of their own insular little bubble.

I'm not sure he's right, to be honest I don't know enough to really make a prediction, but he obviously knows a bit more about this sort of stuff than most of us, including the staff of Techcrunch, as I'm doubting we would have put money on Apple back in 1997.

Settle down Jordan. RIM has a lot of work to do, too many phones and a DOA tablet, but they turn around a half-billion in profit every quarter, have a huge brand, zero debt and international sales presence, and a ridiculously low P/E of 3.25. If you understood what any of that meant you likely wouldn't be quite so offended that someone might dare suggest that presents a buying opportunity.

Jordan, while I would also not pick a Blackberry over an iPhone I wonder why you didn't comment on the actual topic Laszlo is referring to: can the RIM stock recover. When you look back at Apple, it was actually a fundamental change to caused the recovery. It would have helped the quality of your article to raise the things that need to change with RIM rather than just repeating that we all - after the turn around - like Apple. I think both Apple, RIM and also NOKIA and the MS mobile business are great case studies to learn from: if you are down, get up and make it happen. Let's see how they do. Clearly a great topic for TC to cover...

RIM is a profitable business with a strong and enduring presence in enterprise that produces between $200 million and $500 million in profit every quarter and trades at a very low price/earnings ratio.

Analysts make their living making calls that often go against what "everybody knows." In 1997, "everybody knew" that Apple was destined for bankruptcy, after all.

I'm trying to think if anyone of note took over as interim CEO of Apple in 1997 that could have made investing then a defensible bet, compared to RIM in 2011 which has exactly the ame leadership as it did in 2010. Hm...it'll come to me.

Hey writer, aside from being able to afford more than a blackberry, tell me more about these freedoms in the USA since I don't live there and therefore cant enjoy them (As the orange spray seeps in under your eyelids and the burn sets in)?

I tell you in Middle East Africa BlackBerry owns. And you cant even access their store in most countries. The business elite install base simply doesn't allow you to not have one.
