Twitter Vs. Ticker

Natasha Giannaraki
I just found out that there is a Google Chrome Extension that removes Ticker.
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/inbogeebjloglncnccgemjfedfhobfak

When all else fails, turn to Google.

This is indeed a google chrome extension, but must be said that google didn't create it.. When all else fails, turn to the great developers voluntarily making our lives easier :)

well - yes, it removes Ticker on YOUR home page, but YOUR activities are still going to be broadcast to everyone one of your friends whether you like it or not.
and sans-context as mentioned above.
I think this is a huge Epic Fail, but knowing FB they'll just keep it going - and knowing the FB consumer - they will just learn to live with it or ignore it as they see fit.

I really wish the movement to kill this feature would gain some more traction...

2B+ in funding and the best you can think of are some graphs, more 'Like' buttons, G+ circles and a Twitter stream. Where's the imagination?

Imagination comes with the next shiny thing. I can't stand Facebook - its all regurgitated trash these days and it is overrun with internet beginners and Myspace soccer moms

Michael Arrington listened to Pumped Up Kicks three times, and for me it was the beginning of the end.

It's just that I *just* had to filter out people into categories... I didn't know I would have to do it again with filtering out bad music taste. Talking about you George Deglin. (Coming from someone who once made a home music video to Chumbawumba).

This will just lead to more anonymity, as in more people will browse incognito to avoid the involuntarily sharing anxiety.

FB is engaged in self delusion. Everyone I have talked to hates all the FB changes. I for one am ready to close my account. Talk about info overload. Don't want it and I sure don't need it. I really like Twitter and that is really all the social media I need.

chance resistance is natural, the problem is how come are you going to post comments in techcrunch without having a facebook account? i would like to see that

Already raised voice on it to get massive feedback. I believe, Twitter has some distinguished feature to collaborate with Linkedin specifically for specialized people.

they kind of bury their invite w/ linkedin feature & the feature where you can discover people to follow by skill/interest. That being more accesible would add context to the constant stream of recommendations of who to follow. Most active people on Twitter are networking, so wondering what their next move is w/ that. notice that ppl are using the hashtag for weekly industry networking chats.

I don't think Facebook wants us to quit anything. I think they want us to bring everything we use into Facebook eventually. As the apps get developed for that, we will see it happen.

But consider that, all that information on one computer screen is already overload and we will be talking smartphones, pads, etc more often.

The best solution here is to make #dontstopbelieving a trending topic on Twitter, set a date, and one night, America and the world can listen to Journey together on Facebook.

Alexia, you said "After all, Facebook was following much of this activity this whole time, just not making it visible.". It always showed this activity, but was scattered across different walls and items. The ticker just puts it all in one place to see; no privacy or sharing option where changed to make the ticker tick.

One thing I think that really needs to be clear is that Spotify does not automatically ads songs to the ticker that you have listed to. The user needs to specifically approve it to do so! The same goes for all of these ticker enable apps. I am using Spotify right now and it is not scrobbling.

Excellent article! You're looking at the two services philosophically, the correct level of analysis.... Twitter was ALWAYS extroverted, Facebook rose because of its Walled Garden - two totally different promises to their userbases. FB probably uses "user angst about new features" as free marketing. So whining about Facebook is another part of the Chinese finger trap they've built - that just gets Facebook more free marketing.

This whole sharing on the social network reminds me of the movie Forrest Gump when Tom Hanks starts running and everybody starts following it. It all reaches mad proportions and one day he stops.

Does anyone know a better alternative to locking one's account in order to avoid the Activity Tab on Twitter?
[I was told that locking one's account is a way of disabling the Activity Tab].

So... who is ready for a new social network? Or at least ready to stop using FB all the time...

BTW I found this article because someone liked it on FB.. and it came up on my feed of crap.

No I'm kidding. I actively searched for this article :)

If you use Twitter/Ticker mainly to consume news (rather than produce it), check out http://www.koowala.com.

My concern is that people will use Facebook less and limit their privacy more, because they don't want people to know they are always on Facebook, with their actions consuming others' tickers. You never hear people say "I waste all my day on Twitter" because technically you could say you were networking, and it's only 140 characters. The thing about Twitter's activity stream on the other hand, while it may surely increase engagement, Twitter could lose it's aloof factor that sets it apart from facebook.

Liz Carlson It would be interesting to see all that on Twitter in order to discover new people to follow without going through people's 'following' list.
On FB though, scarily enough, I can see who you've friended and what you've liked through your activity even though we're not "friends" there, just by checking your public profile. Is that intentional or a glitch of the new Timeline feature?

Natasha Giannaraki Natasha Giannaraki Yes, I definitely agree with what you're saying about discovering new people, though Twitter may soon have less of a random, no-expectations feel that makes it unique. Re FB: Most of my stuff is friends only, and I actually don't mind likes and friends being public (not a glitch), but it bugs me how I can't see or change app wall posting options, inline (only can hide). If we're getting down to specifics, I want my music to appear in the stream, but not the ticker. Just feel like after a while it can get a little obnoxious, right.

And I want none of my other app activity to appear in the stream. Should be an opt in on Facebook. Don't like when apps prevent you from access if you don't accept extraneous permission requests (like posting to your wall).

Liz Carlson Exacty - favoriting makes a lot of sense - the other way round would be to keep checking people's favorites. But showing who we choose to follow (even worse, unfollow) will definately generate friction. So much for 'frictionless sharing'!

Natasha Giannaraki yeah. (noticed i deleted what i had said). I think in the long run it may be good, because people would feel guilty if they reciprocated some followers over others, and while some would curb their following tendencies to avoid the issue, many would be more liberal about it. Also, I notice that I tend to follow who people in my timeline mention, so I think I would consider following people that people I follow follow when I see that they followed them right there in their stream.
