Greg Kumparak - With all due respect, it would take me 2 to 3 hours (at most) to get this done. There's no reason this should be taking so long.

so basically its the same android grid of static icons and battery hogging widgets. 20 different clock widgets to drain my battery and occupy AND WASTE screen real estate. cool.

Are u kidding me? Com'on how are these screen shots beautiful. They don't look close to anything beautiful.

Brandon Kirkland · Founder at Epicflowers.com | chicfloral.com
It's just the default screen. The great thing about Android is it can be customized to look just like an iPhone. Maybe one day you'll be treated like a grown up too and have the freedom to customize.

Daniel Payan · Technician at PolyStrand
so you wan't you want your android to look like an iPhone... and then you say we iOS users don't have freedom. Gotcha. By the way, ever heard of the term jailbreak?
Reply · 1 · · 11 hours ago

Matt Labour · Top Commenter · Dordrecht
Daniel Payan I think Brandon Kirkland was just giving an example. That said... JailBREAK. That doesn't really sound either legal or any good, does it? Rooting is for Android users a great way to get all out of your phone, but it's not illegal, you maintain your guarantee and you don't have to worry sick when your phone gets back for repair because you will get it back, and you won't get any nags that you've jailbreaked your phone, because you didn't.

Android is an OS with a MUCH greater freedom than the current iPhones will ever have. Apple has a whole different business model than Google. Google aims at open source, Apple aims at overpricing the shit out of every item and hyping it up so people actually buy it. This discussion can go on for ages, but the point is you cannot compare any Android phone with a jailbreaked iPhone, ever.

I have to agree, I think Android is stuck in a late 80's version of a star trek movie. Looks completely dated and I am a big fan of android in general. They need to take a page from apple and put a few consumer centric designers in charge of the outward facing bits.

What a stupid text....
You did read why they canceled the event, right?
Reply · 6 · · 13 hours ago

Greg Kumparak · Top Commenter
Of course I read it. To cancel an event about innovation out of respect to one of the world's greatest innovators makes no sense.
Reply · 20 · · 13 hours ago

Eric Longstaff · Orlando, Florida
I don't see anything innovative in this screenshot post. Other then no Droid Sans font and some different icons.
Reply · 2 · · 13 hours ago

Adam Ross · Marietta, Georgia
That is an excellent point, Greg. They could have gone the other direction with it and made it a celebration of innovation and dedicated it to the man. Like Apply or not, Steve Jobs pushed his company to impressive achievements.

Looks more polished visually but also looks like it's still lacking simplicity and elegance somehow. Weird things like information grouping on the app icons and titles (title is as close to the app it is for as it is for the app below it on the screen) show a disappointing lack of attention to detail that has been floating around Android UIs for some time now.

I honestly don't think their dev team or most of the users even notice things like this. I do though. It grates. It should come packaged in one of those airplane sick bags instead of a box.

What is more important than design is the ability to customize it. If google opens up a good theme engine for the default launcherthey´ll have the most beautifull mobile OS in a matter of months. There are apps for this in gingerbread and the results for me have been amazing, hopefully google will learn from this.

Mattan Ingram · Top Commenter · Creative Director at Mashwork
Customizability is in no way more important than the standard design.

The vast majority of users do not spend time customizing their OS besides the background image and homescreen apps.

William Beard · Top Commenter · Works at Roctek International
Mattan Ingram Where are you pulling that stat from?
Reply · 1 · · 12 hours ago

James Gee Gunaca · Top Commenter · San Francisco, California
Mattan Ingram I don't care what is good for everyone else. I care about what's good for me. And Android giving the option to customize it whatever way a user wants will spark designers to make beautiful themes on their own which I will then, in turn, load on my device. And I won't have to jailbreak and wait for the next jailbreak every time I receive an incremental OS upgrade.

This looks awful. The designs here look like they were done by several different people, all with a different design aesthetic. There is almost no consistency in icon shape, complement of color or theme. The background looks like they visited the msnbc.com website and grabbed a screenshot and then smeared it down the backside of the phone. There is no design cohesion whatsoever. The clock in the background looks like someone just tacked it on, and bears no resemblance to the other clock seen in a different screen shot. Somebody really needs to start thinking about overall composition.

Reminds me of the background wallpapers that came with Powerpoint 97. A mobile operating system has to be easy to use on the go. This will take 10 minutes just to find what's on the screen.

What was the test platform used for the shots? Curious if it was a phone with hardware Android buttons, since you can see software-based on-screen buttons in those shots.I hope you can choose; I like my hardware buttons.

Todd Werelius · VP Development at StartUP
They are supposedly doing away with those going forward, but I agree I like the hardware buttons, it's on of the things when I switch to the iPhone that I immediately miss.

If you want to start using IOS5 just use current version of Android. Every new feature in ICS will be in next apple update.

it was an exaggeration, essentially referring to the death of steve jobs. i would be a fool to try to explain why this article is the end of apple. but i do believe we can begin to say our "goodbyes," as apple has lost its core.

So who wants to tell us what current Honeycomb tablets will get the upgrade? Early adopters will get the shaft on ICS because the carriers and manufacturers just don't get Android, they'll expect us to shell out another $600 and sign another two year contract rather than release the update for devices that can clearly run the OS, and that will kill Android tablets. Those of us brave enough to purchase early Android tablets have already been jerked around enough, having suffered through the 'anti-fragmentation', source code closeting of Honeycomb. Some of us have just barely received 3.1 (I'm calling you out here LGUS, epicfail) and have 18 months left on our contracts. ICS is a great step forward for Android, too bad the carriers and manufacturers will drop the ball after a perfect spiral from Google.

Don't tell me this will kill iPhone & WinMo7... Android needs some serious UI improvement/revision (I'm using Samsung Galaxy Spica).. I wont say it sucks. I'd rather say it needs major revision.
