Am I a nerd if I immediately thought "Unlocked" meant "Overclockable" in this case?

No, a nerd would not confuse both.

The unlocked model only supports GSM because of how CDMA works. CDMA deices are pre-programmed for the carrier. Because you don't select carrier when purchasing the unlocked phone isn't pre-programmed for a CDMA carrier... it won't work with Verizon/Sprint. That isn't a Apple limitation, that is simply how CDMA phones are handled. It's not unusual nor surprising if you understand how cell phones work.

Unlocked, but only usable on At&t network? Last part kills it for me. Worst service ever.

At&t has the worst service in the US. It is sad that we live in a developed country but our phone infrastructure is worst than many developing countries....

Seriously.. what's the point of a world-phone if it's only usable on GSM?

Brad Dwyer because most of the world uses GSM, hence "world" phone

Unlocked models will also fetch a higher price when you sell them, because to date, Apple has never unlocked a phone after the fact in the US, even when your contract has ended.
Another nice thing is that my contract ends in July of next year, and with the next iPhone very likely getting LTE and Sprint announcing they'll have their LTE network up and running by the middle of the year, I should be able to pick from any of those carriers based on the merit of their network and not some exclusive dealing with Apple.

OK I'm a bit confused. If I buy a Verizon iPhone4S and I travel to Europe (GSM) will I be able to use an international data plan through Verizon? I know the rates are high ($75 for 150 GB) but I'd still be able to keep my phone number while I'm abroad so I can receive calls and texts to my #. I thought that was the benefit of having a "Global Phone" with CDMA capabilities here in the states (specifically in SF where ATT coverage is garbage) but then jump onto the GSM antenna while abroad. While I agree it's great to have an unlocked phone so I can pop in a prepaid SIM in Europe for a 1/3 of the price, I'd like to be able to keep my # while traveling. So does Verizon support GSM with their unlocked basic iphone 4S for international travel?

The actual quote from apple.com is "The unlocked iPhone works only on supported GSM networks, such as AT&T in the U.S. When you travel internationally, you can also use a micro-SIM card from a local GSM carrier. The unlocked iPhone 4 will not work with CDMA carriers such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint." It say SUCH AS AT&T not ONLY AT&T, I'm confident that it will work with TMobile since the iPhone 4 and 4s are multiband.

It'll work on T-Mobile, but only with EDGE data speeds, just as every previous 3G iPhone.

I did not see the actual quote in apple web page... how do you look fine

Tucker Weinmann Yes the iPhone 4 (and i'm guessing 4s) support those frequencies 850/900/1900/2100 mhz, T-Mobile serves EDGE over 850mhz and 3G over 1700/2100 mhz (but you need both band). So yes It will work only with EDGE which is totally fine for me, I never use 3G in the past 4years, even when i did have 3G.

Why buy the unlocked version? If you're on Verizon or Sprint, wouldn't you get the unlock version of the GSM network? I believe after 30-60 days you can go to verizon and ask to unlock your GSM part of your world phone. At least that is true with their other phone. Has anyone verified that yet?

Hey Sa Ma (and everyone else), we just spoke with Verizon and confirmed the loophole you mentioned. Article has been updated accordingly.

Be cheaper to simply buy your upgrade on contract with your favorite carrier and then run jailbreak and unlocking tools on it. I'd buy an unlocked phone if I could expense it though.

Btw, who cares if they called it iPhone 4S and not iPhone 5? is it just a matter of name for you? The 4S is still better than the 4...

It's going to be a tough battle, I think. I'm an iPhone 4S on Sprint but the ICS screenshots look pretty sexy.

do carriers in the UK offer unsubsidized (cheaper) data plans for unlocked phones?
Reply · · 14 hours ago
Grant Gibson · Digital Innovation Manager at Newsquest
André Bruinsma Yes, we have good plans in the UK for anyone who brings their own handset. Regular (subsidised) iPhone contracts start at £35/mo, but SIM-only deals start at £10 for voice/SMS/data packages. Definitely worth buying the phone outright here if you can afford it.
