It is an information gathering structure, one designed to advertise. You are a part of the largest marketing group man kind has ever known, facebook. Once you put in actual personal information you are in sense selling yourself to the highest bidder, with no gain other than your 'concieted' joy of social flocking. The timeline is attempting to gather information to predict how your needs will evolve from taking data from a linear perspective. Once you register in just how you've grown in the real world, they can more accurately design the future of the consumer market. If you enjoy what the world has to offer, so be it. But not everyone likes being subdued and forced to play by others rules. The distractions, and produc...ts that keep you hooked are all being updated by technology that has you plugged in, and reporting for duty ...See More

Seems to me I can choose to have a very boring timeline. I'm not writing ANYTHING I don't want anyone (even friends) to know.

And THIS is the thing that everyone's missing! No one's got a gun to your head to share your whole life story on Facebook? What I already used to share on there is non-personal.

Who really cares if your precious personal timeline on FB will be forever stuck for eternity in the virtual web of FaceBook and belong to them, never knowing if or when you will ever retrieve your memories, your personal life story;essentially your journal, your Autobiography? You're acting as though fB has taken the chip out of your head, your virtual brain, and is playing hackey sac with it. If you can't remember what you post who your friends are 3000 miles away, and some random joke you posted without having a downloadable FB timeline, seriously, you need to get a REAL life!

Agreed. If you're really conceded that your old memories are "trapped", you need to go outside or something.

Yup I was right Facebook is becoming more creeper and stalker friendly. Now anyone can know anything about you because they are making it more visible when you don't want to. Why fix what isn't broken. I'm sorry even though yes I am young to learn how to work the new Facebook but I don't really want to because I do not have the time to sit their and putz through everything. Plus I already hate the update they had already done.

Precisely...I do not even use facebook. I have an account set up soley to comment easier on all these articles I read online that clearly need due attention. I have no idea who you are. But here I am commenting on your comment. I have left similar comments along the techcrunch page concerning the facebook timeline update. If I wanted to I could click on your picture, download it, and if I was an affiliate of facebook, use it to sell or market a product. The timeline will further enable this process, and potentially I could use your comments, stories, or other information to get to know you, market you, and sell your family and friends just about anything I think you would like. Facebook needs to be avoided at all cost. It is foolish to use such a invasive and unnecessary tool.

Exactly Alexandra !!!! This is just another tool our LAWLESS GOVERNMENT will use, sell, promote and store to further their agenda of massive control. The most alarming part of this story is actually the part most people just passed over while reading: " Facebook users have proved, time and time again that the network can do PRETTY MUCH ANYTHING IT WANTS, whether thats a major redesign or an EGREGIOUS PRIVACY VIOLATION. It doesn't matter PEOPLE WONT LEAVE...
Just as this administration is doing to a country of spineless jellyfish, who are having their CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS taken away. To most people, FB is just a game... They see no harm in
it at all. Great line, " WHY FIX WHAT ISN'T BROKE"? Remember, isn't that the same question most Americans are beginning to ask this LAWLESS CORRUPT ADMINISTRATION??? Knowledge is power,
arm yourself with real information. Their will plenty of sheep going to slaughter, sounds like your NOT one of them.
Blessings...

Now as well they can easily find you and stalk you and see what you do in your daily routine. Talk about freaky and wierd. Also knowledge is power and power can corrupt you and make you go insane so I am not looking forward to some insane person trying to take advantage of something or someone.

So why would one want to put their autobiography online in FB for the world to see? Anyone that knows me - already knows my life story - it is only strangers that do not - under the category - "Don't fix what isn't broke.

I don't worry what FB does or doesn't do with my info. Nothing in = nothing out. My personal information stays with me. I have never under stood why people get upset with FB and their personal information. Keep at home and the Govt will not have it.

Yes, but do other people know that? Are you willing to let others into the mouth of darkness by sitting idle as a corporate venture attempts to use them as their next marketing scheme? You wont fall prey to their tactics, the government can't use you. But how can you inform others of the danger of being burned if you, yourself play with fire? We need balance, but why should FB have any part of it? The situation is also of a higher gravity than most fail to realize. Pictures, stories, comments, any info at all can be used. With constantly changing terms, and 'updates' it may not be long before your mug shows up on a ED advertisement without your knowing consent, for all we know they could be using it in China right now.

As has been said many many times, if you don't want someone to know something, don't post it on Facebook. Once you do that, it's out there for the world to see. Unless you keep it to yourself, it's no longer a secret. Having said that, Facebook is in the business of gathering information, organizing that data on lists, and selling those lists. To whom do they sell, you ask? To anyone who'll pay for them. It is, of course, the digital version of mailing lists. If you want to tell the world that you're taking the family to Sydney for two weeks, and you'll stop at Aunt Peg's for a day or two before coming home, your valuables might be gone when you get back. After all, you've only just told the world where you going and when you'll return. I'm not a conspiracy nut, and no I don't look for black helicopters. I do believe that the best way to keep a secret is to tell no one.

this is how solicitor's get your information. People sign up for grocery store "giveaways" etc. etc., one person wins...but all those thousands of people who filled out the ticket with their name , phone number and address just gave them a nice mailing and phone list. Reading the fine print, it basically says you have just voluntarily gave your information and permission to be used by them or their associates. This trick also gets them around the no call list. Which, in it's self is a call list. As politicians are immune from the no call list and have access to it.

Sarah, I presume that they will add the timeline to the export once the timeline is rolled out to everyone. The FAQ you linked to also states that. We'll see in about a month's time. What I would like to see is an export of the data in some structured form (ex. JSON or XML). And then there's always the OpenGraph API to export info if need be (although I can see Facebook not being all that happy about that).

I hope so. I am curious where 2006-2009 went though - that data is missing and has nothing to do with new Timeline features.

Sarah Perez, maybe they're testing things out right. Many parts of Facebook are in constant flux right now and it looks like Facebook is fixing up bugs (there are several things that were buggy on chrome on the timeline, but they are now fixed for me)

"Big Brother is watching you" was a slogan used back in the 60's & 70's. People marched on Washington & held protests when ever the government tried to tap into their personal lives.
I do believe some information should be out there, but when your information is used to compile data files on you and everyone else - that's creepy. Makes you want to take a look back in history at what Hitler did.

Facebook is not the only one - Twitter agreed to allow the US government to collect our Tweets. That was some time ago. They are gathered and placed in The National Library of Congress. Obama created jobs for some people to go through our tweets. Now, tell me, why would the government want to know what we had for breakfast, or what TV shows we tweet about? You can look it up - there were articles written about it.

My life story is no body's business (especially FACEBOOKS) but mine, my journal is in my head and thank God so far Facebook hasn't learned how to get in there. My god there's ALOT of people out there that don't even understand the "CONCEPT" of what facebook is "TRYING" to do! Set back the clock on facebook and next time ask before you do something that no one wants!

WTF every-time I turn around F.B. is trying to rape my privacy. Now after pulling out half my hair, I figured out how to completely wipe my public wall if someone searches me. And, if you think just hitting the BIG PRIVATE button on settings is it Hahahahaha nope these tech hackers that work for F.B. would find that too mundane. All my "Changed profile Pic" where left. Hey F.B. I like playing chase your tail, but your def. Captain obvious! OH and I'd hit the link here to post to F.b. also, but unlike Any Other social website except in Taliban countries F.B would banish me.

I will NEVER list anything on this time line thing and I bet there are more people out there that agree with me than Facebook. What a shame that they took a perfectly good social network and turned it in to such an intrusive product. People who know me well enough already know my time line but telling potential strangers? Not going to happen.

no, you actually have more control now than ever before of who can see what. Ask your friends to unsubscribe from your comments and likes under the subscribe button after hovering over your name. You can also set your stuff to be private under custom on each comment...or go to privacy and select only me. If you want something to be private where only you see it, the last place to post it is on the internet anyway...
Reply ·  · September 27 at 11:13am

That's not really control. That's depending on your friends and acquaintances to be nice enough and go to the trouble of of unsubscribing.
