Facebook’s iPad App Was Feature Complete In May, But They Won’t Release It, So The Developer Quit

Frustrating for users but a very smart move by Facebook - they are possibly the only company in the world with enough leverage to persuade Apple to change its famously non-negotiable 30% rule.

I am not sure if Apple would waiver, but Facebook seems to be Apple's main competitor in the future especially if Facebook can implement music correctly.

30% rule? Facebook already has an iOS app and this is a free app for a non-paid service. I'm a little perplexed by your reasoning. Could you elaborate a little more about how Facebook would be subjected to Apple's 30% cut?

I think its more about the future of having the same experience across all platforms which is what Project Spartan promises for them.

Given all the changes they're (Facebook) rolling out it makes sense to wait on the new app to incorporate all the new stuff. Maybe that's what the hold up is...

That's the most likely explination. They need to implement Timeline, Ticker, and Subscriptions in the mobile apps too. Might as well hit everything in one go.

Max Woolf This. You can't even see Timeline in the old app they have, but it is viewable in the Safari browser. The interface is very slow though, and looks like shit.

I see what you mean but why wait when you have a user base >10M strong armed with iPads why hold it up even more while they switch the layout. My only reasoning for this would be the amount of either bugs or extensive api changes that would need to be made in order to use. Everyday this goes without being released they loose money to other app developers advertising on their own Facebook app knockoffs.

I think it has been a poor choice on Facebook's part to ignore the iPad platform. All opinions and preferences aside, the iPad is the tablet market, and that market is anything but small. Although I will say that iPad users are using Facebook anyway, the whole "we don't need to cater to you because you need us anyway" attitude leaves customers with a sour taste in their mouths and they'll be very quick to leave you behind when decent competition comes along. Just ask Microsoft why they haven't seen my money in years, even though they don't need it, there will come a day when they do. This could, however, be exciting news for Google.

Developers Alert! If you own or admin. or even have a favorite Fanpage, then this concerns you. FB Official documentation states, that If you don't comply by Oct 1.(developers) FB Fans are not going to be able to view your content. You may have noticed a dropoff in traffic, lately already. This could have more to do with timeline and the other changes announced at f8. Rather than release an iPad version only to have to turn right around and change it all in a matter of months probably put it on the back burner while they finished timeline. In the meantime they are fine with users just using Safari on the iPad to access the site as its intended with the new features present.

I don't think that logic makes sense. The iPhone app doesn't have any of these new features embedded in it and they're not about to pull that app.

"We'll wait until 'x' is ready before releasing the iPad app" could leave us without a native iPad app forever because of how quickly facebook innovates and brings new features to their users.

The iPhone app was already out there and the experience will always be a bit limited due to screen size. If timeline was making progress and was going to change everything then why would they release the iPad version months before if it would just need changing? It now looks like the plan is to announce it Oct. 4th - http://mashable.com/2011/09/26/facebook-ipad-app-iphone-app-exclusive/ - be interesting to see if its about the same as the leaked views we've seen or includes some timeline like views.

Scott Cropper now THAT would be an excuse to delay - to get the spotlight at an Apple event where new hardware is announced!

For Facebook to lose a disgruntled employee to no other than Google is a statement in itself. Kinda curious that both companies seem to be operating by the same type of people. Makes you wonder if FB and Google are corporate clones of some sort.

I access facebook on my ipad using Safari. It gives me the same experience I get in my desktop browser with the exception of anything having to do with Flash. In fact the only reason I would ever download an extra app to access facebook on my ipad would be to view video. I wonder if integration with Flash embedded video was hold up?

I doubt it. Isn't Facebook already encoding in h264 for iPhones? Even if not, I don't expect people would hold higher expectations for the iPad being the same OS.

You have to admit, though, that dealing with Facebook.com in Safari is kind of a pain in the ass. The site is not designed with touch in mind. Very difficult to tap various UI elements, some are hidden unless you 'rollover' them which is not an action the iPad handles. I could go on, but I won't. It's all been said before.

I knew it had to be because of the strained relationship between Apple and Facebook. How about they put their differences aside and think of the consumers? We are in desperate need for an iPad app. There's a near-complete one waiting to be released. So just release it already.

I for one welcome the wild speculation. Keeps things interesting. Was shocked to find there wasn't an iPad optimized FB app/experience, after having such a terrific FB app experience on my HP TouchPad. Decisions like that aren't made lightly.

The delay most likely has to do with the big changes that were rolled out at F8. The leaked images of the iPad app don't show a Ticker or Timeline. I'm fine with it. With the pent up demand for FB's iPad app, its in their best interest to get it right the first time and wow us the way they did at F8.

Project Spartan always makes me think of MSU, our Little Brother to the north. I hope said project is way better than a mediocre party school in Michigan that plays second fiddle to another university.

I just think it's rude. It's one thing to be proud of the school you attended and it's another thing completely to make fun of other schools.

This is why app stores suck. HTML5 is ridiculously important to the open and unregulated world that we've all grown accustom to.
