Screw you and your rock. That thing is fricking adorable.

Fascinating. Do you know, this is very similar to the symbiotic relationship developed between the giant salamander of New York and the hermit crap Coenobita amsterdamis, discovered by the famous German biologist Professor von Ulme? He discovered that the giant salamander had developed an antenna on its head, with which it would try to attract hermit craps.

Lying perfectly still on the river bed, it would wave its antenna about until a hermit crap would grab hold of it. The skin on the antenna had specifically adapted to resist the strength of the crap's claws, thus preventing it from being detached. Once the hermit crap had bitten onto the antenna, the giant salamander would secrete a mutating neurotoxin into the crap, putting it in what can only be described as a blissful drug high.

Over a period of a few days, the neurotoxin would alter the hermit crap, causing an exponential growth of its carapace that would slowly attach itself to the giant salamander's head. Once attached, the altered hermit crap would begin secreting chemicals into the giant salamander's brain, causing an exponential growth in both cognition and intelligence in the giant salamander. All the while, the antenna would continue secreting into the hermit crap, keeping it complacent while nourishing it at the same time.

In time, over the course of a year, both the giant salamander and the hermit crap would develop into a single organism. Mutating itself, the giant salamander would develop a frill around its neck, allowing it to "puff" itself up to appear larger than what it might be.

To Professor von Ulme's surprise, the end result was a giant salamander of nearly-human intelligence. Because the shell on its head resembled a crown and the frill around its neck resembled a regal cape, von Ulme named the creature Molchkönig, or the Salamander King.

Horror? That's actually kind of adorable. Much nicer-looking and immensely more fascinating than the original smurfs, who just kind of annoy me.

I think it's cute. Kind of like those little aliens with big eyes in Galaxy Quest. You know the ones.

As somebody raised on Brian Froud and Alan Lee's work, this fits right in to how i think smurfs would really look, Peyo be darned. I love the accompanying biology text.

Can someone please make an all-CG movie based off of this concept art? Let's get Luc Besson on it, as his Arthur and the Minimoys-films are actually quite good.

Please?

Also, that thing is ADORABLE!

...what about smurfette?
soma_junkie 27 Sep 2011 3:58 AM
Interesting that it has hair and yet it is part fungus, but according to scientists who have compared sequences of ribosomal RNA, fungi are closer genetically to animals than to plants, so it does make some sense.

As you can see, this little guy is returning from a successful venture.

Even if he is just 6" tall, bagging one snail really isn't something for any hunter to brag about. Just sayin'.

What, that's way more awesome than a cartoon Smurf. Those kind of Smurfs I'd like to get to know.

You'd crush a harmless, sentient being under a rock? Why, that's murder!

Seriously, where does that attitude come from? To me, it's the only thing about this post that really freaks me out. The realistic Smurf? Totally cool and interesting, and pretty adorable.
