Maybe I'm a bad RPG player, but I don't like it. I hated that IWD2 didn't have anything even remotely resembling a quest log (something that even BG had), and you had to scroll through a badly organized journal with no idea what entries are importent, and what quests you excepted... Especialy in an RPG with lots of side quests, you need a "to do" list.
Rowr14.
Dam i'd prefer an isometric view over the 3rd person. Really all you need to do here garriot is make a modern version of ultima 4 and you have a winner.
bombyouup62.
I like the game and what I saw. But hearing that its like episodes....I dunno about that.
-Mithan-.
It would be awesome to see a new Ultima game. Ultima's were the best RPG's in the 90's. What blows my mind is that with all the "kick starter" type projects out there now or indi development games, nobody has created a new Ultima style game OR an Ultima Underworld type game. I would kill for an Ultima Underworld type remake...
Vargo_Brandhl.
Garriot is serving Me Generation koolaid and I'm not buying it. Even the kickstarter for this smells like the red-headed stepchild of EA and Origin. Old RPGs were not fun (to me) because they forced restriction or choices you had to live with. Rather because they rewarded cleverness. Interesting challenges married in human principle for victory, ego and fortune. Modern games display this mechanically by usually giving the player a box of Olympic Gold Medals. Problem is that getting a gold medal is only fun when you know it took uncommon luck or dedicated practice as a master to earn. When I beat Kings Field 2 on my old Playstation I shared the experience with my friends and for years looked back on the joy it brought me or the stories of my trials I could still tell. When I beat God of War I went back to watching T.V.

No coop world exploration with friends? Moving on.. But great attention to detail. I think people would just play skyrim then this since it doesnt really offer anything new but instead brings nostalgic RPG play with modern RPG play.

The game looks painfully average. How does it expect to stand next to modern-day RPGs like Dragon Age and Skyrim?
zapffe.
By offering unprecedented freedom beyond their scope. Gameplay > Graphics.
lone_sunset.
Gameplay is a holistic term that includes story-telling, combat, character progression and the like. I could see how the game would perhaps be better than something like Dragon Age in terms of the freedom of the narrative, or the lack of strict morality system. (story-telling) But combat-wise, or just in terms of the NPCs and the look and feel of the world... it just seems "meh".

Good point about exploration. The parts I usually enjoy the most, like in games like Skyrim, Fallout 3, and Ni no Kuni, is the part before you're able to fast travel all over the place. That's usually when I have the most interesting encounters and have to work for every inch of ground that I cover.

All you young'ins out there talking noise, let me tell you something. This man and his Ultima series created every major convention in RPG's first. Choice, moral consequence, flexible character design? Fully interactive worlds? The whole Avatar concept? You think Bioware or Bethesda came up with these ideas?? I was playing with these concepts in the 1980's with the Ultima series when those guys were in kindergarten. Ultima is probably the greatest RPG series of all time and in my mind, Ultima IV through VII is unmatched with VII being the Greatest RPG ever created. Yeah, we're old, we had our time, yada, yada. I get it. But some classics you just shouldn't miss. I'm telling you, if you haven't given them a try, you're missing out. Look past the graphics, read the manual that came with these games and delve into the stories they weave. I'm telling, this series is timeless.

It's hard to make these kind of games when CD-Project RED makes these with Amazing combat, Amazing story and Lore, best of the best developer/production skills and State of the Art graphics. I hope He keeps costs low and tries to find a nice, core audience and makes a profit so that this talented studio can get the funds to compete with the likes of The Witcher and other high profile games. Note to developers: Dont go for the home run, Nolan Ryan has been pitching lately.

Since when has initial class choice been a "modern" game trope: Final Fantasy 1 (US), Guantlet, King of Dragons, etc. In many "older" games, you were either given a list to make a party out of, or given your characters out right. Not much to do with choice there. Unless you're talking about the Atari days (which I never experienced first hand) but I'm pretty sure they couldn't even code in classes on those things.

The idea of building a deck of skills is kind of interesting, you could end up having a "hand" of 4 skills available and each assigned to a button or key. My favorite quests from any recent RPG were in Oblivion and were the only 2 I can remember that had you exploring without any markers. In fact the hilarious invisible yetti wasn't even a marked quest at all I don't think and the other one had you wander the paths following land marks from an old journal description you found. I do agree with the idea that exploration has been lost and obscuring you're objective lends to much more immersion in what you are playing. Dark Souls used this perfectly, they never told you where to go, talking to the character who told the lore of the way to open the gate was optional, there very few parts that were off limit from the start of the game and you could very well explore yourself into an area that you were obviously not suppose to be in.

Since the card combat system seems to make the game kinda automatic and handled by the AI, this could probably be ported to Tablets and sell like crazy!!! The Tablet/Smartphone market is huge right now, and is lacking these kinda RPGs.... or they get lotsa J-RPGs with bad controls! iOS and Android devs who just do a straight port of a console game and then add touch-screen buttons always have bad controls! But with this kinda game... you won't need buttons to attack! You just walk up to something and the card combat does all the attacking for you!

lol, yep >_>
EvilAlienIGN.
Kind of. No Avatar is the reincarnation of any other Avatar, rather the Avatar is an essence unto itself, and each person (Aang, Korra..) are hosts to an already existing creature. Since the Avatar is eternal, it cannot be reincarnated, and since Aang, Korra etc are only mortal, they too cannot be reincarnated. So I think actually, Aang and Korra are two vastly different people, both playing host to an existng essence.
Furious_Scott.
You're showing your age there Charles. Us old gamers would like a refresher from your typical go here and quest RPG. I still think U4-U7pt2 had some of the most revolutionary game play. I still tear through them from time to time to remind me of the old days...

This is really rough looking. I imagine that over time the game will get better animations, AI and textures.
DriftSpaceZero.
Is good gaming all about animations and textures now? I played a riveting game of Khet the other night, and I had to animate all the pieces myself. Super realistic graphics though...
metalhead9806.
Its a 3d rpg. i expect it to be comparable to other indie projects at the very least. that video has graphics and animations from 2002... fine for games that released then, but not for soemthing new unless its a chosen art style (purposely made to look retro).
andyford12.
Yeah it is, but they just announced it today. The kickstarter has a goal of one million and it's already a quarter of the way there. I imagine its going to look much better when it's finished.

Larkan511.
I don't think someone with money should be given more money to create something they can do without our money.
Guest.
You obviously haven't done your research. Garriott doesn't have that kind of finances. Not to say that a lot of the kickstarters over the last couple years weren't from people who didn't need our money. Garriott is an exception. He not only needs it, he deserves it. The man is a pioneer and a visionary, and given the proper funding he can prove it again I believe. He's probably the only one who can. Unless you want to given Blizzard money again when Titan comes out.
ckiely.
LOL, so what the guy blew millions going into space and now needs my spare change so he can earn a million bucks and pick up where his career left off??? Please, Richard should fuck-off. I'll give my money to the up and comers.

This guy's got balls to think he can get a million dollars in thirty days, lol
DriftSpaceZero.
Today is 8 March. 29 Days to go, and he has almost $250,000 raised. This project will over-shoot its mark weeks before the campaign is done. You underestimate the impact Garriott has had on the history of gaming, and the number of people (mostly older, who have steady jobs and are financially stable) who were directly influenced by his creations, and are willing to support his new projects. I've had the page open for an hour, and it's increased about $10,000.
Obrusnine.
It was a complement, :P
DriftSpaceZero.
It's over $260,000 now... Yeah, not a lot of game designers could raise that kind of money in that period of time...
RushinCommey.
cant be as bad as Ultima 9 that was shit ugh even if he wasnt invole in it
Mog_.
Good. Glad to see lord british wasn't gonna let EA rape his franchise without a sexy rebuttle to point out that shit is not ultima.
DriftSpaceZero.
Blame EA for Ultima IX, if you read about what happened before its release it's obvious it was their fault.
RushinCommey.
Well cant be worse then Ultima 9 that was shit even if he wasn't involved in it
Benderisgreat.
As long as it's not as bad as Ultima 8 & 9
shatupon.
I loved Ultima 8! It was the first PC-game I beat from start to finish and I did it at about 10 years old. It was very difficult for me at the time. I had to Boot it up in DOS!
Benderisgreat.
It makes sense that you would think it was good at that age, when I was 15 I liked Armageddon, but if you looked at it now it is way worse than you probably remember, it had an unfinished lackluster story, multiple side quests were left unfinished, the combat was destroyed from Ultima 7, the jumping controls sucked, I don't even have to mention those god awful chests, the poor dialogue, the countless bugs, and the fact that it was rushed out unfinished. But at least it's not Ultima 9.
DriftSpaceZero.
Exactly: it wasn't rushed as much as Ultima 9 was. I thought Pagan was plenty fun; I wasn't expecting it to be like Ultima 7, and enjoyed the risky change in game-play mechanics.
Benderisgreat.
It was still extremely rushed and poorly made, almost unplayable, especially those jumping sections.
Kingmob23.
It sounds interesting; hopefully he conjure up his old mojo and makes us forget about the later Ultima's and Tabula Rasa.
ndrewsmith.
If it can deliver on those promises of interactivity, I'm sold....except a card based combat system? idk...i hope he realizes not every RPG for video game fan plays D and D or Magic or other obsolete forms of entertainment...
MikeyTupper.
magic is more alive than ever and in fact i find it better than video games. I could play MTG all day. The meta-game is insane and the options are infinite when playing that game
ndrewsmith.
No, the options APPEAR infinite, but that is factually untrue because their r a finite amount of cards...and ur only option is sitting there with a handful of cards....not knocking it, do what u want...it was an opinion.
MikeyTupper.
of course there are a finite number of cards. Nothing in the world is infinite. However, there are more options than in any video game that gives you the illusion of freedom, or the illusion of choice
Cuddl3s.
Pi is infinite
kush.say.it.
Question: Is it possible to be cool and play MtG?
MikeyTupper.
i'm past the age of trying to be cool.
christophe2315.
Well, Kingdom Hearts : Chain of Memories has a card-based combat system, and it worked pretty well. Also, "obsolete forms of entertainment"? Really? Entertainment does not become obsolete over time; as long as it entertains, it stays relevant.
Speedster116.
I'm a huge Kh fan and I didn't like Chain of Memories, I don't like the card system.
christophe2315.
I thought it was an intriguing concept, and actually worked pretty well. I wouldn't build an entire series around it, but for a portable spin-off it was a clever system.
ndrewsmith.
so....you'd like to go watch a hanging would ya? cuz no entertainment ever becomes obsolete? gonna go ballroom dancing anytime soon? freshen up on the waltz r ya?
Emsa.
Actually, what he said is correct. The sentence to read is "As long as it entertains, it stays relevant". Hangings are not relevant because they don't entertain (hopefully), but this isn't an effect of time but opinion. Changes in opinion has to do with societal circumstances and changes, and while these changes do happen over time, time isn't the cause of the changes. So while entertainment CAN become "obsolete", which is a bad choice of words considering it could come back next year (although in the case of your hangings and ballroom dances, let's hope not), it is highly unlikely that books or pen&paper rpgs will stop being valid entertainment any time soon.
TanakaTUO.
Ballroom dancing always was and has a following, the competitions are on tv. And if you lived in say Iran or saudi arabia where public executions are a thing, then yes you may go to the friday hangings.
DriftSpaceZero.
Obsolescence is about technology, and entertainment should not be inextricably linked to technology; entertainment is about imagination. I can put my kids in a pile of dirt and they'll entertain themselves for just as long as they would with a Wii remote in their hands and Mario Galaxy on the screen. If they stop finding things to do in a pile of dirt: it's not because the dirt is different or less worthwhile; it's because the people evaluating the dirt have changed.
Despair6666.
you actually contradicted yourself there, it is obsolete once it stops entertaining.
christophe2315.
... Good point. I guess I could have phrased that better. What I meant is that it isn't time that makes a form of entertainment obsolete (as opposed to, say, a piece of technology... or that yogurt I left in my locker for a week), but the attention people are willing to give it. As long as people find a game fun, it will not become obsolete, regardless of how much time has passed.
Despair6666.
Then I agree with you, its never about time its always about how people feel about it. Hell I still play some text based games because I still love them.
christophe2315.
Ah, text-based games... I still find Zork more immersive than many modern games. Why did that genre have to disappear?
Buckxn.
Obsolete?! ... *sigh* kids...
DriftSpaceZero.
This is what happens after 20 years of linear story-telling, and games telling you exactly where to go, what to do next, and how to do it: the bar is lowered, and people expect to be treated like babies.
Jumpy46.
What is with the tabletop game bashing in your comment? Calling those obsolete is like calling books obsolete after the invention of television.
ndrewsmith.
hahaha, i knew i shouldn't have put that, it's an opinion, that's it...i don't care what people play or do for entertainment.
Epyjacek.
Just because you don't understand the spirit and awesomeness of Magic the Gathering and AD&D doesn't mean it is obsolete. I personally never got into MTG, but I get it and I see it's worth in terms of entertainment and strategy. Closed minded people like you make the world worse.
Ant-IGN.
it's not exactly cards. More like moves are shuffled behind the scenes and just pop up randomly in your "mind." YOu don't have to collect them or anything.
ndrewsmith.
I'm aware of that....i don't want random actions from a character...i want control...when i press a button i want my dude to shoot...if i press the same button i don't want him to kick....that's an extreme example, but I'm guessing u get my drift.
Riffman5440.
Great coverage Anthony! May be something I try if I can get away from guild wars 2

Oi, DnD is awesome! I love modern video games but that doesn't mean pen and paper is 'obsolete.' Some of my best memories are of DnD sessions with friends in highschool and I hope to play again in the future!

DriftSpaceZero.

leifericj.
Your post makes me very sad.
dponeil.
I'm sorry, but this description isn't working for me. Some of those conventions like a yellow exclamation mark might make it "easy" to play, but thats because it's more convenient. convenient =/= easy. you can still have challenging game play without obscuring everything and making it a random guessing game what you're supposed to do next.
DriftSpaceZero.
Just because there aren't "yellow exclamation marks" doesn't mean it's a "guessing game"; what Garriott wants is for players to PAY ATTENTION to dialogue choices and world details, and to find their direction from those things. Ultima was about LISTENING, THINKING, and PAYING ATTENTION to what was going on in the world and with the characters. Garriott wants to actively engage players as opposed to leading them along a linear, pre-lit path. So many players just blast through dialogue trees so that the obligatory "exclamation mark" appears, and modern games have long fostered this lack of imagination and attention; they hold your hand and point the way from the title screen to the credits. Sorry, but some of us miss when games required brain-usage instead of looking for the "exclamation mark" and mindlessly mashing buttons until the end. While you are certainly correct that there can be challenging aspects of a game without shirking "convenience," I think modern gaming "conveniences" are exactly the thing which make games too easy. Nobody told you the robot master order in Mega Man games, and there was no giant, flashing icon in the original Zelda outing the location of the next dungeon. These games are what made gaming great, and we've dumbed it down too much over the last 20 years. When you dumb-down art and experience, you dumb-down people, and you dumb-down expectations.
lone_sunset.
I would love to see such "challenging" gameplay in a game that looks more visually excting, or with combat that doesn't seem so dull. I was recently intent on getting Baldur's Gate The Enhanced Edition after seeing some gameplay videos. The dialogue, the party members and the story intrigued me, me being a fan of BioWare RPGs from KOTOR to Dragon Age and Mass Effect. I could content myself with the graphics but the combat was just so dull, that I couldn't imagine playing an entire game with my characters simply hitting creatures with swords or magic. Visceral and exciting combat is as integral to the experience as great writing, in my opinion.
Rolox01.
I don't think it's meant to be a random guessing game. Not telling the player exactly where to go is more of an attempt to immerse the player into a story and world to figure out solutions to problems. The reason I get so bored of RPG's now is because they have a quest marker or a path telling me exactly what to do for every objective. I don't even know why or what quest im doing, just go to the glowing dot. It's forcing you to read character journals to understand their thoughts and paying attention to your surroundings. For instance, I remember lore and quests a lot better from vanilla wow than more recent editions because there weren't markers telling you where to go. You had to actually read the quest log and go explore. Convenience is fine but it feels like its overdone now to the point where its too easy.
dponeil.
Oh, I remember those days, too. and you're right, I'm sure most people don't even pay attention to what the quest log says anymore. but there's got to be a happy medium where things aren't spelled out for you OR totally obscured.
Rolox01.
I agree, there's definitely a balance to it. I've also played those games that give almost no information to the point where I just gave up lol

I loved getting lost in the old Ultima worlds! This game looks awesome! And shame on RPG fans who haven't played the old Ultimas! Know your roots people.
Powerman293.
In the words of Spoony: Betrayal!!!!!!!!!!!!

Always nice to see channel awesome fans around! :D

Card combat hasn't sold me, but the old school rpg setting has!
msweeney411.
At first I thought the same thing, then I thought about Magic: The Gathering and exactly how in-depth you can get with a card based combat system. All in all, I am definately kicking this starter.
CrossCrucial.
The battle system sounds lame. You just start the combat and sit back and wait for abilities to autofire? Sounds exciting... >sigh<
EvilAlienIGN.
Agreed.
DarthBrian.
"When you’re setting out, you’ll start as a larger scale version of your avatar trekking across the larger world map, like an overworld map in a NES-era JRPG." Or like an overworld map in Ultimas I-VI. *sheesh* kids today.
EvilAlienIGN.
Sheesh, elitists these days.
metalhead9806.
I imagine its going to look much better when it's finished.
nickjamesm7.
This guy has some good idea's for sure, but I don't necessarily like all of them. I'll follow this game to see how it turns out.
I'll give my money to the up and comers.
nemesislayer.
I'm rooting for Titan!!!
AK_Valkyrin.
So it's like Morrowwind? Where you have no marker telling you who to talk to or were to go...You just have to find everything on your own....
Obrusnine.
May be something I try if I can get away from guild wars 2
alicegardens.
Oi, DnD is awesome! I love modern video games but that doesn't mean pen and paper is 'obsolete.' Some of my best memories are of DnD sessions with friends in highschool and I hope to play again in the future!
BoBucks.
I didn't read a single new idea in this entire article.
Nebbun522.
Is it me or does this sound like Everquest to anyone else
DriftSpaceZero.
Everquest sounded like Ultima first.
WAHI1547.
Heeey. This isnt Avatar. Where's Korra??
Gamer_Since_Birth.
Sounds pretty awesome to be honest if they can pull it off the way they describe it
zerogod-xerxces.
Do they make good turn-based RPG's anymore?
