Beijing mandated real-name registration for microblogs shortly after I wrote this piece. Along with heightened censorship, that measure should reduce some of the vibrancy of discussion on the platform. Still, the vast majority of users care more about chatting with friends, sharing baby pictures, or stalking celebrities. Can't remember when I first got my QQ number, seems so long ago. And Chinaren.com, it totally had the potential to become Facebook when Mark Z was still in elementary school. Don't know where it's going nowadays.
