Film, Music Industries Battle Leading Internet Companies Over Online Piracy Over 40 Internet Companies Come Out Publicly Against SOPA (Including Us) | TechCrunch
@Binny Zupnick

@Andrew MacKenzie
On the other hand, we might rue the day that 4Chan and ICanHasCheezburger are permitted influence over Congress... .
@Crispin Young
I can already see a photoshopped LongCat popping out of the top of the congressional building
@Claudio Martins
don't think otherwise. these sites have a huge amount of users. it's very easy for them to push their users against SOPA and pressure congress. they alone, as companies, won't due much to pressure the congress directly, but they have millions supporting them.
@Bill DeMuro

Be interesting to see what Apple have to say, or have they spoken? Not had time to look into it.
@Jacqueline Hughes
One of the lists I saw showed them supporting SOPA.
@Ralph Haygood
Jacqueline Hughes That would be amazingly silly of them for several reasons, including all the ill will it would earn them in Silicon Valley.
@Peter Austin
Apple are keeping quiet. They're in the Business Software Alliance which supported SOPA, then backed out under pressure from Microsoft. http://9to5mac.com/2011/11/18/does-apple-support-the-stop-online-piracy-act-by-proxy-at-least/ Apple's problem is that they are in bed with Big Media (via iTunes etc), which supports SOPA 100%.
@Jacqueline Hughes
Ralph Haygood I had seen them listed as supporting SOPA back in mid-November via http://thenextweb.com/insider/2011/11/17/which-tech-companies-back-sopa-microsoft-apple-and-27-others/. Thanks for sharing Peter. It'll be interesting to see if they take a stand or remain silent about the issue.
@Patrick Maginn
Don't forget about DreamHost! http://blog.dreamhost.com/2011/11/22/dont-drop-the-soap-drop-sopa/
@Bạch Mã
Up to 50% sale off Panda Security products. http://in4share.com/ads/138/
@Social Print Shop
we are against SOPA!
@Dylan Mace Mason
TPB is very opposed.
@Dylan Mace Mason
as am I.
@Ralph Haygood
Apple? I realize you're, let's say, a little conflicted about the web - it's so messy, and you don't get 30% of the take, etc. But you know, despite all those apps, a lot of what people do with your lovely little machines is on the web - watching videos, posting statuses, and much, much more. So maybe you should say something about this. Set aside, however briefly, your visceral loathing of Google. This is bigger than that. Otherwise, you might eventually have to say, "First they came for the DNS, and I didn't speak out, because I wasn't that into the web," because rest assured, they won't stop there.
@Robert Anhalt
Who are you addressing? And what is this even about?
@Stevan J. Reilly
Apple is a member of the business software alliance who is fully endorsing this legislation. By not explicitly speaking out against it, they are clearly for it.
@Robert Anhalt
Stevan J. Reilly That's fine to discuss Apple's position, but my point is he's addressing Apple on a TechCrunch post comment.
@Ralph Haygood
Robert Anhalt It's a bit of a joke. Apparently, it went over your head.
@Ralph Haygood
Robert Anhalt Incidentally, if you want to be pedantic, you should write "whom," not "who are you addressing?"
@Nima Sarhangpour
My favourite registrar: Name.com. http://blog.name.com/2011/12/getting-on-our-sopa-box-and-saving-you-money/ Transfer all your domains from GoDaddy to Name.com with code NODADDY!
@Peter Forgione
A group called the BSA (Business Software Alliance) has opposed this Bill. Luckily for us, companies such as Microsoft & Apple are in this Alliance. Don't think for a second that big companies are for this bill, they are smarter than that.
@Caleb Renshaw
thank christ !
@Micah Madru
Please don't paint them to be saints. They're part of the problem. Majority of the businesses in there pushed for SOPA, but backed down because it got too hot for them! http://extratorrent.com/article/1795/kaspersky+lab+will+quit+bsa+over+sopa+support.html
@Peter Forgione
Micah Madru Don't get me wrong, most companies are just doing it for their own benefits. I'm just saying that it's good to have large corporations on your side, rather than against you.
@Micah Madru
Peter Forgione They aren't on our side....they're on their own side...and they saw that being in support for SOPA right now could be a far worse ending.
@Peter Forgione
Micah Madru "The enemy of our enemy is our friend." That's all I'm trying to get at.
@Micah Madru
Peter Forgione I get what you're trying to get out. How I would phrase it is you support their stance on being against SOPA. They seem to be for it not because they really are for it though, but because it's more beneficial to them to be against it right now. In a little good ol' fashion display of Godwins Law: Nazi's have done a lot of terrible things, but they did do some things right. You commend them on the things right that they do, while showing concerns for the things they don't get right. You wouldn't call Hitler your friend if you were anti smoking just because hitler was a strong anti-smoking individual. (enemy of your enemy is your friend, right?). Anyways I had my fun, lets STOP SOPA! That's the main thing I want to get at. :)
@Liam Acton
Even though SOPA won't affect me (As I'm in the uk), I realise if anything goes through in the USA London will reconsider where they stand and follow suit. So I have decided to stand united and pull all 20+ domains I have with godaddy to namecheap. Whilst it's costing a small fortune (24 x $7) I can sure as hell be proud I didn't support the dictatorial godaddy.
@Alex Badescu
SOPA will affect you! If the close youtube in the US, it will be closed to you too(and if SOPA is approved, Youtube WILL be closed eventually). You have my respect for moving the domains! Good Luck!
@Liam Acton
Very true, I hadn't considered that. However I would imagine google etc would move their servers to another country (Their finnish datacenter is amazing), thus allowing most of the europeans continued/uninterrupted service(The european union would make it difficult for any country within the EU to impose SOPA type legistration - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-15871961).
@Alex Badescu
i'm sure that they will move the datacenters, but the problem is that it will create a starting point for the EU,Asia etc. This law was created under pressure from Universal, Warner Bros. etc. Once the US law is passed, it could stir things in other places too. + a very big inconvenience that will affect all of us (delays, product quality, response times, platform reconfiguration etc.)
@Micah Madru
Just think of all the content you would be missing out on from American users that can no longer upload stuff to the internet. No matter how you slice it the effects will reach you. Kudos for switching domains though!!
@Liam Acton
I completely agree it will affect no matter where the servers are. Everytime I here the american nationial anthem 'land of the free' it really does suprise me how 'brainwashed' some americans are to think they live in a 'demorcratic' society. If you look at countries with simular blocks: china, Iran etc they live in suppressive societys. A recent highlight of america's 'democracy' was during occupy wall street; Peaceful protests basically supressed and arrested for protesting(agree or not with occupy). They're happy supporting democracy and peoples rights in libya or egypt (albeit palestinians) etc but are unwilling to allow americans the same rights (as highlighted with this sopa bill).
@Josh Brown
SOPA will affect us Brits the same as everyone else. They are even trying to extradite SOPA-breaking brits to the US where they will be imprisoned.
@Bilal Mughal
Youtube and other companies wont be much of an issue. Main issue is the ICANN which is in United States. They are the sole registrar for all web domains. Since US laws apply to them, they can potentially shut down websites even if they are not US based sites.
@Wayne Wolf
Liam Acton You're pretty close to the concept there. We have the right to "peaceably" assemble for protests. A lot of the Occupy were anything but. I opposed them, but respected their right to make their views known. But they were also disrespectful of many city ordinances and crime was pretty common throughout some of them; also none of them paid for the resources they used (security, sanitation, etc). When the Tea Party protests were going on, there was little if any crime reported and many of them paid what was required by the various cities. As to SOPA, I cancelled my GoDaddy account today and am currently moving my domain names elsewhere.
@Dylan Parrin
You don't realize that SOPA affects the world. Not just the USA.
@Liam Acton
@Wayne I'm talking about peaceful people who march or sit down and cause no violence who were being arrested or pepper sprayed. I acknowledge about it costing the us goverment money however it's only a very small percentage of what the US has payed on silly wars.
@David Kirwan
Don't forget about Blacknight. https://twitter.com/#!/blacknight/status/150145571238313984
@Paul Edelman
We at TeachersPayTeachers (user generated content by teachers) are AGAINST SOPA, contrary to several large educational publishers who are FOR SOPA, including Scholastic, Pearson, McGraw Hill and MacMillan.
@Chris Toms
Macmillan support SOPA? They're my favourite publisher of didactic material. What about OUP? I can't find anything about them, and I'm a bit worried because the school where I work is affiliated with them.
@Jacqueline Morris
It will be difficult to boycott them, but we can try to find Open Content material to use...
@Alice Bradshaw
SOPA can break the Internet. If there's something the people in the US should really be willing to go to war for it's is the Internet. It's the backbone of the future society. Hacktivism and slacktivism is not always the answer. Sometimes you gotta burn some tires.
@Peter Austin
Idiot. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necklacing
@Alice Bradshaw
Peter Austin Do you think I meant necklacing or something else?
@Ciaran Carroll
Peter Austin That was a wierd comment
@David Goecke
SOPA tryin' to turn my swag off. Can't run technology companies, for the most part, with such goveregulation. I say GTFO haha
@Buntu Redempter
Thank God namecheap is against it.
@Buntu Redempter
You should add http://wikindu.com/ to the list.
@Jeroen Vader
Pastebin.com also - https://twitter.com/#!/pastebin/status/150159642637500416.
@Stefan Lewandowski
Interesting. I've turned the two lists into a side-by-side "for and against" comparison on Wrangl. http://wrangl.com/sopa and you can add any others you know of if you feel like it.
@Katelyn Friedson
Megaupload -http://www.techspot.com/news/46641-megaupload-sues-universal-and-joins-fight-against-sopa.html
@Rose Whoflung
Have you read the SOPA bill? It applies to foreign websites only - not those located in the US - and is designed to combat foreign piracy and protect US intellectual property. It basically gives the US the right to take action - blocking access to sites located in foreign countries who are acting in a way that violates US laws. ISPs, search engines, ad networks and payment companies have 5 days to comply after an order is issued by the DOJ. I understand "slippery slope" concern - if you can block an illegally acting foreign website, you can block any site someday. And I understand suspicions that the government may incorrectly identify a foreign site as engaging in illegal activity. And the argument that it's best left to the market to block sites engaging in real or supposed illegal activities (like Wikileaks). But at least when you're reporting on this, get the gist of the law right and make those arguments instead of propagating half-truths.
@ÎνÏÏÎ½Î·Ï Î Î±ÏÏάÏ
Perhaps they should pool their resources and buy the studios.
@Adam Bonnifield
Redfin, cited in your article as protesting the SOPA-boycott, has actually retracted their statement... http://blog.redfin.com/blog/2011/12/more_crow_please.html
@Jc Hulce
http://nosopa.net is a domain registrar that fights censorship.
@Elliot Noss
Tucows has been publicly opposed to SOPA, COICA and all of its antecedents! it is fantastic that there is a huge burst of energy against SOPA in the last couple days AND I hope that this sustains through support of orgs like demandprogress and others. and do feel free to bring your domains to http://hover.com as we are very SOPA-friendly! :-)
@Jacqueline Morris
Hover is you guys? Looking to move & make recommendations to the T&T peeps who are supporting NoSOPA
@Micah Madru
Might want to clarify yourself. Saying you are SOPA-friendly sounds like you are for it. ;)
@Jacqueline Morris
LOL - good point!
@Elliot Noss
@[502811114:2048:Jacqueline Morris] hover is us!
@Elliot Noss
Micah Madru thanks micah. you are right. SOPA is so odious that I could not even imagine supporting it other than from deep self-interest. I also like to use positive language. so, we are anti-SOPA friendly :-)
@Jacqueline Morris
@[501490823:2048:Elliot Noss] - think Hover can have a SOPA special transfer offer? Move X domains and get 10% off?
@Elliot Noss
@[502811114:2048:Jacqueline Morris] we do. use the coupon code SOPA
@Jacqueline Morris
Oh yaay!
@Jacqueline Morris
ignore my PM - hadn't seen this comment yet.
@Nick Longo
+1 Elliot!
@Matt Labour
I know it won't help much, but I just moved out the one single domain I had hosted with GD. My own 'fuck you SOPA' statement, albeit a small one :)
@Ben Baugher
I think Amazon should be on your list.
@Robert Anhalt
you think? or you know?
@Marty Lafferty
The Distributed Computing Industry Association (DCIA). at www.dcia.info
@Dave Cascino
Name.com. They oppose SOPA, are inexpensive, and their UX is one of the best for a registrar. (admittedly, its not that hard to beat godaddy on usability).
@Gebadia Smith
Since SOPA is a US thing couldn't we just turn off the internet in the states and go about our business in the rest of the world?
@Simon Key
100 Domains pulled from GOdaddy to Namecheap, Godaddy you officially SUCK! lets see how you going to like SOPA when you loose 50% of your customers ;).
@Allen Lau
Please add Wattpad to the list. http://www.wattpad.com/user/allenlau http://blog.wattpad.com/post/12881785904/american-censorship-day
@Adam David Pinilla
Don't know the specifics of SOPA? The Law of the Geek podcast did an excellent episode on it: http://lawofthegeek.com/2011/12/04/lotg-004-shiver-me-timbers-a-sopa-discussion/.
@Robin Elias Pinilla
Marked to read later, I was just looking for info on SOPA last night.
@Stephanie Haller
ConsumerBell just posted a lengthy blog post about why SOPA is bad for product safety information. We're absolutely against it. We've got about 100 domains with GoDaddy; looking into other registrars now. http://blog.consumerbell.com/2011/12/23/consumerbell-says-no-to-sopa/
@Felix Mak
this whole sopa soap opera is like abortion, people taking sides.
@Joseph Price
This madness has to stop. Strongly against SOPA. Between this and the NDAA crap, we're drifting toward "book-burning territory." We need the pilots of this plane to pull up.
@Ryan Dorn
Can't help but notice I already use the services of this list of companies a hell of a lot more than I use the pro-SOPA companies. I guess I'll just keep on keeping on...
@Russell Loomis
Where is the white house on this?
@Saul Waizer
BuckMatch.com and its affiliates will pull all domains (1000+) from registrar @godaddy for supporting SOPA (the Stop Online Piracy Act).
@Lucas Lain
Flipzu.com is against SOPA.
@Jeff French
LoudDoor is opposed to SOPA.
@Geo Watsons
It's sad.
@Andrew Pennington
It's awesome to see big names on this list! SOPA is a great way set online business and innovation back by almost unmeasurable lengths. It will make me extremely happy to transfer my 15 godaddy domains elsewhere.
@J Arturo Covarrubias
Why I don't see Microsoft , Apple and Google on the list?
@Damien Moore
Google is there!
@J Arturo Covarrubias
Damien Moore my bad
@Tim Letscher
No Pinterest? They'd seem like a no-brainer.
@Pete Stringfellow
Where do you stand on SOPA?
@PlanMySite
PlanMySite is against SOPA as well. We don't need another Great Wall... http://planmysite.com/blog/proposed-bill-has-the-power-to-significantly-censor-the-internet
@Dylan Parrin
AOL? Are you stupid. Time Warner owns that - They're one of the ones supporting it.
@Zach Flauaus
Please take the time to actually look over things. 1) AOL did in fact sign their name to the full-page ad in the New York Times saying that they are against SOPA. TechCrunch even posted the link but here it is again: http://boingboing.net/2011/11/16/internet-giants-place-full-pag.html 2) Time Warner doesn't own AOL. They became their own entity in 2009.
@Dylan Parrin
Zach Flauaus Even so, they're partnered with CBS with their radio.
@Edward Rossi
lol, I'm all for no SOPA but all these site a just a subsidies of google, yahoo, aol and the rest are just recent startups. pretty unimpressive line up when it comes to pushing legislation.
@Glass Heel
Glass Heel is also opposed to this bill!
@John Martins
A quick glance at both lists says it all. One group is concerned with making money, one group is concerned with freedom. If you ask me, the "freedom" list consists of websites the general public view favourably and the "money" list consists of websites they don't really care about. So it's essentially the people vs money-grabbers, and "the people" always sounds like the more appealing choice.
@John Phan
I can understand the catalyst for SOPA but passing it into law would be a huge detriment to the Internet affecting billions of people who depend on it everyday. I am therefore opposed to SOPA.
@Vandré Israel Brunazo
Apple and Microsoft are pro SOPA: http://thenextweb.com/insider/2011/11/17/which-tech-companies-back-sopa-microsoft-apple-and-27-others/ The pirate bay is against it: thepiratebay.org
@Kevin Bolazo
If they think that Occupy Wallstreet is disruptive (I do not support that movement in anyway) hellsgate will open if they pass SOPA. I can definitely see a revolution once youtube, torrent, rapidshare, and porn type of sites go down. The US Government is made up of 90% old and senile folks. I'm in my late 50s and I'm saying this so you should know how fucked up it is! Haha! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJIuYgIvKsc Share that video or you will die with regrets.
@Rohan Relan
Please add YouWeb Incubator to this list!
@Michael Newgyn
The U.S. House of Representatives is filled with politicians. The internet is not something that can easily be learned. You discover the internet over time and develop a sense of respect for it. The House of Representatives busy themselves with monopolizing the government and conforming laws and regulations. They do not have the ability to comprehend the internet, yet they set out to change it. Their knowledge of the internet is dull at best, relying on the media such as news corporations. These men and women of Congress simply are just too old and outdated to think towards the future. America needs to have more youth in the government.
@Cristian Johan Vazquez
if you think About it GOOGLE is the internet haha oh well hopefully this inhuman law does not pass.
@John Corfee
Apple's not on here, Lol.
@Kyle York
Please feel free to add Dyn Inc. to your list http://dyn.com/sopa-what-you-should-know-why-dyn-opposes-it ---- http://dyn.com/sopa-breaking-dns-parasite-stop-online-piracy.
