How to Handle Awkward Facebook Friend Requests
aHarman Kochar · Subscribe · Harvard
Isn't it kinda ironic that Path automatically posts the following on your facebook wall "Harman has joined Path: www.path.com/harman"?
The whole point is to be exclusive, so lemme just tell everyone on facebook that I joined Path!

At what point did it become necessary to "share everything"? I don't want to see every little thing from even my closest friends/family. I may be in the minority here but it sure seems like this whole "sharing" thing is getting a little silly.

Couple of thoughts: 1) the app is gorgeous. I wish every app was that gorgeous. Someone should hire that team yesterday. Now if only the FB app were that awesome. 2) I am not really sure anyone needs to know when I wake up or go to sleep. The world does not need to know I am an insomniac. (oops- overshare) 3) if I need an app to share with my 3-5 best friends I have issues. I am more likely to pick up the phone, text or crazy as it may seem - see them in person to catch up. I think we are also all "posted out". Having yet another place to record my life is time consuming. But did I mention how beautiful the app is?

I definitely agree with the fact that I'm limited down to a handful of people, I can share in more meaningful ways then having another place to post, amongst all the networks we're already posting to. When does too much become too much?

Path is one thing: a Facebook acquisition candidate.

Good article. I haven't heard of path till just now but I'll give it a try. And unfortunately, probably give it up after a week because there is a limit to how many social networks I can manage. It's funny how there is a new one every week. Sites like profilegraveyard.com are pretty funny in the way that they track who is leaving their social networks and why.

Looking forward to the next version of Path where I will just share with my wife or husband.

Honestly, this is the only use case I might use Path for. Stuff I wouldn't share with other friends or family, but would share with my wife.

I love path just because it has the most beautiful interface. For someone who have under 150 friends like me can't find the different between Path and Facebook. The concept of micronetwork or macronetwork (not sure such a thing exists!) is really irrelevant to me. Once again I don't care the concept is a just marketing stuff but the interface is so simple and wonderful.

Seems intuitive, but unfortunate. Path is one the most pleasantly designed apps going, yet we're supposed to only share it with a small handful of people. I agree though, if I hit 10 people in Path, I feel I would need to question if I am adding to many people.

I disagree, I think that the limited network is Path's weakness. They are clearly trying to go against the big boy Facebook with a self-stunted product. Isn't going to work.

"the ability to share with a subset of your friends. For now, this binary “Share just to Path friends, or share to all your friends” may be adequate. Eventually as devices like the Jawbone Up give us more personal data, I think we’ll want even more sharing granularity. Depending on the content, we’ll want to the option to share to just our very best friends, our close friends, our nearby friends, all of our acquaintances, or the public."
So Basically, your saying Google+ is the future of sharing? Logical, I always loved the pitch of google+. Only problem is that its completely inactive.

Agreed. I think Path should bring back the 50-friend limit. I don't know anyone that has more than 50 close friends and family members.

50? While I was reading this I was thinking who has more than 15 people...? You honestly want members of your family up in your business? I envy your family =]

Great article. I wrote up something similar in response to Path 2 and how less friends means more depth to relationship: http://marcosuarez.tumblr.com/post/13552916082/whats-the-value-of-a-relationship-anyway.

Why use path at all... isn't that what Google+ or Facebook lists are for?

Path currently provides some very nice features that neither Facebook nor Google+ do (sharing music listens from one's iPhone, automatically checking one into places etc.). Furthermore, the Path app for iPhone is beautiful compared to the iPhone apps for Facebook and Google+.
If Facebook and Google+ had the decent features Path does, and if their iPhone apps looked as good, I would agree with you. Right now, I just use Lists on Facebook because it does do the majority of what Path does, and I'm able to reach a wider audience on Facebook than I can on Path (for certain content I'd like to share with the public).

also, another comment.
a lot of naive people think that an online business (such as a social networking site) is an easy business where u can make money. I used to think that as well. nothing could be further from the truth. software/electronics is one of the HARDEST businesses to make money. but most people do not know that, so I am just letting everyone one know.i am pretty sure this path thing has genereted close to zero dollars so far. now, how many traditional businesses do u see that exist when not making money? very few. it's not a profitable business.

this article is so far from truth its funny. generally, the more friends you have, the more you want to share. the whole point of sharing is so that a lot of people see what u share.
this statistic holds true on the www.peoplemix.net - the site I've founded.
it's just that sometimes people want to share things only with certain ppl, and that's where lists/circles come in.

I'm not sure how I feel about this because I do wish to share some of my Path content with everyone. The music I listen to is just one example of content I'd like to share with everyone, while I'd like to share my location with certain people only.

Why not just get a seperate smaller Facebook account? Or make your fb friend list smaler. Or make a facebook group? Or text/call these people? Path seems like an unnecessary half step between Facebook and (Texting - > Callng -> Meeting in RL) that does not seem necessary. http://goo.gl/iMWL2

Guess what? Not going to be too much trouble rejecting requests. Requests received from friends or family for Path v1 or 2 so far? 0.
