Facebook Buys Gowalla

"with a stronger emphasis on virtual goods (and nicer icons) than their computer." I think you mean "competitor".

Ha, fixed, thanks!

No problem. Glad to help.

Barak Tutterrow it is auto correct.

It's only a matter of time before every company is owned by Facebook, Google, Apple or Amazon.

But the mother of all companies, Walmart, will buy out Facebook, Google, Apple, Amazon and anything on its way lol

Nonsense, if this were 1900 you would have said the same thing about U.S. Steel.... companies come and go. No one stays top dog for long when you have a competitive economy. Watch for the big companies looking to collude with government in order to retain marketshare, however.

Their office at Palo Alto will be right next to the Beluga guys' office.

Next acquisition "Instagram" or "Path"?

Azizul Karim
Isn't Path facebook for mobile?

Muhammad Huzaifa · Subscribe · Top Commenter · Chief executive officer at IKnowl
Azizul Karim Path is unsuccessful version of Facebook for mobile. Facebook acquires most of the companies for their talent not for product even if Path is copying them still Facebook might be interested in its acquisition.

Muhammad Huzaifa errr I think Path is the successful version of Facebook for mobile in terms of UI. have you seen path 2.0? their founder is FROM facebook.

I think Foursquare will stay strong as many people try to avoid checking in to Facebook as they have everybody on Facebook. Like you have your boss for an example on Facebook but you would avoid having him on Foursquare to see all your pub-crawl check-ins.

foursquareに対抗?今のところFacebookよりはfoursquare派。

This makes sense in the context of Facebook pulling back on its own place based check-in system. Gowalla's is more robust and nicer looking. Gowalla always suffered under Foursquare's first-mover advantage, its technology is wasted playing second fiddle, Gowalla goes with Facebook.

Michael Bauser · Subscribe · Top Commenter · Kent State University
Oh, spare us the "first-mover advantage" bullshit. Fourquare and Gowalla both made their public debuts at SXSWi 2009 -- Foursquare's "advantage" was, like, two days. Foursquare won (even that first week) because it worked better, and marketed itself better.

If you think Gowalla's going be reborn as Facebook Places 2.0, you're delusional. This is a talent acquisition.

I am tired of these Ivy League morons trying to control the world.

Don't you mean Ivy League dropouts? #OccupyIntelligentThought

they are much poorer than they pretend to be, so don't envy them too much, it's all about bulshit anyways, nobody gave them $10 million, they just put out bulshit news that they did and techcrunch prints it for ten bux more.

Warren Davis
Serge Bronstein Vahe is green with 'ivy', it is (and will always be) about bulshit (sic) anyways (sic). 10 million is chicken feed - and boy, if I weren't a vulture, I wish I were a chicken ;)

Wow. That came out of no where. Congratulations to the Gowalla team.

I am sure it will fail dismally if Facebook continues to have secrete agreements with the CIA, FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, NASA, and The National Reconnaissance Office [or equivalents] on "Thought Control" methods designed by the Masons and Illuminati to usher in their Hellish "1984" scenario.

Oh, the ironing. Clearly these are all reasons why Facebook would succeed!

Daniel Vampan yes, all those meeting can't be attended wearing wrinkly clothes

They have a really really talented design team, this is a aqhire rather than a big move to integrate Gowalla's tech. I could see them doing in location what they did with Beluga, launching a facebook location app or some kind of social guide.

Vahe Ohanian
Facebook has to disclose first of all of their agreements secrete or otherwise before I advocate its competitor to topple it because of lack of TRUST and/or Confidence in Facebook's privacy policies. I say if they build not to my pleasing, then I shall destroy with pleasure.

What are you smoking? Either change the contents, or the paper...

If Facebook is going to have Gowalla working on Timeline, that still leaves open the possibility of them buying Foursquare for Places.

Michael Bauser · Subscribe · Top Commenter · Kent State University
Not really. Foursquare's not angling to be bought by anybody.

Michael Gnagy · Co-founder at MAVN
I wonder if Gowalla's API will continue to function. Right now we use Gowalla's API to stream check-in data, something that Facebook doesn't allow us to do currently. Foursquare allows you to stream tips, but not check-ins so Gowalla did exactly what I wanted it to do.

Facebook & Gowalla teaming up against Foursquare? Only one side will win.

Yeah. Foursquare's side.

don't think so .... looks like a talent acquisition.... Foursquare has his own purpose and right now they are hard to beat ...

I wonder what all these companies that got acquired, all the investors, all the shareholders, etc. are going to do if by chance FB starts to collapse.

Gowalla is gone, Foursquare remained alone. They celebrate! )))

It's ok, painful at first, but you'll eventually come to accept defeat, or wisdom.
