...and only if you're eligible for a discounted phone, which a good majority of iPhone 4 users are not. This is the biggest area Apple still needs to figure out. How to allow for yearly upgrades of phones. Think about it, 100% of people converting to the latest version every year. That would be a powerful increase for revenue.

AT&T doesn't recoup costs that way. It may be nice for us, but it doesn't make business sense. Choose wisely.

My guess would be yes. The subsidized price is based on a new contract or renewal. Full price (no contract) is 650/750/850 depending on GB.

I was able to trade my 3GS in this morning at Radio. So the iPhone 4S was $169 - 100 = $69. I was super stoked until I was reminded of California's ridiculous tax, where they charge you sales tax on the full, unsubsidized value of the phone. That was an extra $70, so the total was about $140. Still, that's a pretty good deal.

This is still likely not a good a deal as just getting a new iPhone 4s and selling your iPhone 4 on Craigslist (although surely less of a hassle). I just checked prices on CL and an iPhone 4 goes for between $275 and $350 depending on all the usual things.

Tech bloggers suck. Don't leave out half the effin details when you write an article, especially two of the most important catches about the deal. You have to be eligible for an upgrade and you have to be willing to sign on for another two year contract to qualify for the deal.
