This is a cool, unexpected and thoughtful thing to come upon in io9--and inspired by concept art too, as my own dreams and musings sometimes are. I'm often critival of io9, but this is very good.

I've got to say that top one looks like it was lifted from old SF3D/Maschinen Krueger model kits.

Though a much simpler style, I find this series of drawings from Nedroid utterly charming, and rather relevant here.

I stumbled upon Amiee Mullin's TED speech a year or two ago and ever since then I have been extremely fascinated by prosthesis. I wonder why prosthetic arms and legs are designed to look and act like human arms. We are limited in what our physical forms can accomplish, so why impose that limitation on someone that no longer has an arm? Why not make an arm that works better than a human arm, joints that can bed "backwards" a hand that can rotate a full 360 degrees. Hell why even have a hand at all, is it really the best implement for grasping things? Maybe tentacle arms are better.
When we eventually arrive at the point where we have cyborg eyes why not put a HUD on them, allow them to see in spectrum we can't "naturally" see in. Why not have an option for infrared, ultraviolet, radio waves etc.

Annalee, you are just a talented with the written word, as the artists that inspire you are with colors.

I guess in that last painting the robots haven't shown up yet.
RizzRustbolt @corpore-metal
Those are actually gynoids in the center there.
corpore-metal @RizzRustbolt
Hm, humaniform robots frolicking in a cave instead of mining the pitchblend out of it?!
Slackers!
RizzRustbolt @corpore-metal
Frolicking in the cave pool is their job.
corpore-metal @RizzRustbolt
Bah! They need to be replaced with proper mining robots! I want this place strip mined, paved and covered with ugly shopping malls inside a week! Don't you know there's zillions of space-bucks ridding on this terraforming project!? Jump to it!
How can tourists spend big bucks to appreciate all this natural splendor if we don't start putting up hotels and parking garages for their jet cars?!

*Reaches behind Corpore-metal and flips off his power switch.*
I think this exec-u-bot is defective. He didn't touch his scotch or stogies, and spent all day berating the plastic plants while wearing a child's wading pool.
corpore-metal @RizzRustbolt
--then cleaning robots came in to haul the defective execubot away. Eventually Corpore Metal got recycled into metal lawn furniture.
Sadly the terraforming company wound up with one of those new, trendy execubots--sporting those oh-so-modern horned rimmed glasses--that then did exactly the same thing as the old one did but greenwashed everything behind Starbucks logos and disingenuous concerned corporate citizen ads.

Does anybody know why the Fiction-Lathe keeps spitting out stories about robot executives and their attempts to exploit the koi-pond?
corpore-metal @RizzRustbolt
"I know! Last week the fiction-lathe had a bad break up with one of the sexbots and has lately been turning out lots of really dark stuff. Kinda sad really. But I guess that's why it has it in for all the natural splendor with frolicking androids and gynoids."

Maybe we should set it up with the new receptionist-babbagoid in accounting?
corpore-metal @RizzRustbolt
Naaah, you know dating coworkers is a disaster for office morale. What if it ends badly and then they have to come into office every day for work? And then we get the splash back from that crap storm! Not a good scene, man!
We should try to fix it up with that one of those sexy, giant autofacs we have out in the asteroid belt. For some odd reason, they all like to be called "she." Maybe because they give birth to other things. I don't know. I'm guessing this fiction-lathe thinks it's male or is a lesbian or what?
Argh! It's so hard to tell with these artificial lifeforms! Plain old human relationships is hard enough!
I'm gonna get a cup of coffee. You want a danish?
petar1 @corpore-metal
The first image shows a "Melusine" exo-suit from Machinen Krieger (MaK or SF3D) which is a model series from Hasegawa and NItto. The artists copied the suit design faithfully, however the scale is absolutely wrong - it should be about 130% the size of a human who fits neatly inside. While the illustration is executed well, if you're going to rip off a design, you should at least get the scale right.
