Ah, Mac Raboy--so very talented.

Hunh. I guess Spider-Man WASN'T always hyphenated. Neat to know.

I wish Spidey still had his armpit webs. Cracks me up.

Like a flying squirrel suit!

Oooh were they supposed to be useful? Not just sexy? ;)

It depends on the artist. Sometimes, he'll have them.

Good to see Daumier and McCay in there. I hope they've included some of the Hernandez brothers' work as well. Jaime in particular draws some of the best action scenes of any artist today. Completely static, but full of motion.
GORNMagazine @GORNMagazine
Another fine example.

I'm digging that up now. Talking to a couple of the archivists, the LOC has had some trouble attaining a lot of comic book specific art since it ends up in collector's hands.
GORNMagazine @Keith Veronese
It's also nice to see Milton Caniff in the examples. Between him and Dan DeCarlo, you've got a nice progression to Jaime's work.

There is no art from Los Bros Hernandez in the LOC's archives...there should be though.
Moziles @GORNMagazine
So... I appreciate that Los Bros Hernandez are much beloved and classic and so on and so forth. On the other hand, I'm looking at the first page GORN posted and I'm just seeing someone who needed to take lifedrawing classes.
I assume I'm missing something, due to aforementioned classic status, but honestly, that's just not very good drawing...
Is this one of those revolutionary-at-the-time-for-historical-reasons classics? Great when it came out, not so great now?

Long ago, I managed to see the five issues that made up the original run of DC's Firestorm at the LoC. Just had to fill in a form saying I was doing research on the comics of Gerry Conway. I had no way of knowing that someday DC would reprint these. So I did what I needed to to read lost issues of my favorite series. (I was a huge fan of the character in his original form.)

It really is easy - I saw all of the Amazing Fantasy #15 art last summer. I just had to e-mail, get a card, and show up. They sat it on a table in the archives and I got to gush over it.
Conway's Firestorm was pretty darn good by the way.
Simon DelMonte @Keith Veronese
Yes, but it was disappointing to see what a poor artist Allen Milgrom was, after the dynamic work Pat Broderick and Rafael Kayanan did with Firestorm later on.
swenson @Keith Veronese
I'm thoroughly jealous. Even just looking at the original inked pages makes me gush--if I lived closer to the LoC, maybe I'd pull the same trick!

Actually, the pupils are there in the original comic, but not in any reprints since.

I didn't know that - good catch!
enteecee @my-email
No, I remember them in some reprint with a comment by Stan the Man that that was the first and only time we'd ever see pupils through the mask.
'Cause I know I've see that and I sure don't have a copy of Amazing Fantasy 15 lying around anywhere.
enteecee @Keith Veronese
So, um... #corrections?
Keith Veronese @enteecee
Here's the final page from the digital copy I've got (shhhh...).
Keith Veronese @enteecee
I don't know about a correction, but I will award an io9 no-prize for advanced comic knowledge.

The pupils also appeared in the 1977 Pocket Books reprint (which is where I first read this story).
I saw the original to Amazing Fantasy #15 last year, on a visit to the LoC. They have the whole issue, including the Lee-Ditko backup stories (without Spider-Man).
