Report: 41% Of North American Mobile Users To Buy The iPhone 5

Dave McHale · Marist
These are the dumbest, most unscientific numbers I've read in a long time. HALF of ALL blackberry users plan to switch? HALF of ALL iphone users will switch? A full QUARTER of android users will switch? Who the hell did these people talk to? Does this phone make you coffee in the morning? Put the kids on the bus? Go to work and do your job for you?

40% of the entire mobile userbase will NOT have the iphone5, sorry. :P Even 40% of the SMARTPHONE mobile userbase won't have the phone.

I'd imagine lots of people will say they 'plan' to switch but many probably won't go through with it, what it does show though is intent and overall consumer interest, even if only half those 52% of Blackberry owners switch, that's still extremely bad news for Blackberry.

On a two-year upgrade cycle, it's plausible that half of iPhone users will switch. But for the rest, I think it's just a silly season response. Forward "are you planning to" surveys have overreported iPhone numbers for a while now.

If everyone who said they were going to buy an iPhone over an Android phone 6 months ago had done so, the 56% Android 28% iPhone numbers would be reversed. Either people change their minds once they actually decide to buy a phone and see what the options are, or people are misreporting in the first place to seem trendy.

If you really think it is that ludicrous why is the post so angsty? sure the numbers are ludicrous, but for Apple, isn't this becoming the norm? I think it'll be at least in the neighborhood of these estimates.

These have to be the most exaggerated numbers I have ever heard. 41% of mobile users? Seriously? Someone has some bad data.

Where the FUCK did people get these numbers? This is utter and total garbage. Shame on TC for even giving this story any light. This basically states that almost half the mobile population will have iPhones and as a student at a major tech university, I can tell you that while iPhones are popular, many more people are getting interested in Android and Windows phones. Just because someone has fabricated metrics, doesn't mean you should post them. You are better than that TC or at least you used to be.

I love how all the Phandroids declare this survey as "dumb, unscientific, and null & void" just coz they don't agree with its results, and yet on the Android market share posts, they shoot down anybody who DARES even discuss the study's results. The comments space on here is starting to look like Engadget's all over again.

Half of this story was copied and pasted from the press release. Where are the quote marks, TechCrunch?

I will 1 of those 41% but I don't think apples just going to release a product update since they kept everyone waiting so long I think they might an updated an iPhone 4 and also an iPhone 5.

Title aside, I think the cited report implies that 41% of *smartphone* (not any mobile phone) users "plan" to buy an iPhone 5.

So with ~900M mobile users in the Americas, Let's say about half are in North America. inMobi is suggesting that Apple is going to sell 185M iPhone5s in the US, Canada and Mexico when they only sold ~40M iPhones WORLDWIDE in 2010? Color me skeptical. My stats come from http://mobithinking.com/mobile-marketing-tools/latest-mobile-stats#subscribers and http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/01/06/piper_15_8m_us_iphone_sales_in_2010_even_without_verizon.html.

Steve Martin Mobile subscribers in the Americas (North and South) is about 900M. The stats I linked to said 880M, I rounded for convenience. I'm taking half that (~450M) as an approximation for the total number of mobile users in Mexico (pop 112M) plus the US (pop 308M) plus Canada (pop 35M). I realize it isn't exact. That not every person in all three countries has a mobile device. Of course, lot's of folks have more than one mobile device. I have 3. The article above said 41% of North American mobile users will buy an iPhone5. 41% of 450M is about 185M. 185 Million iPhone5 devices. Let's say I way overestimated the number of North American mobile users. Let's say instead of 450M there are only 200M. That's still 82 MILLION iPhone 5s. They only sold ~40M worldwide in 2010. Doesn't that strike you as a bit of an optimistic projection?

nope. Windows Phone 7 mango here. iPhone will never have facebook integrated like wp7. enjoy that "twitter integration" though, even though its just a crappy native application, and not really integrated.

You could be right, although right now its foolish to be so declarative about things you couldn't possible know. http://www.gottabemobile.com/2011/09/26/facebook-integration-coming-to-ios-5-screenshots/ These might not be real screenshots or a real update, but this along with Twitter integration would be a big deal. Anyways, Ill take a vast library of quality apps over Mango as it stands today. It's not like the iOS twitter app is difficult to use...

These don't seem like legitimate numbers. I'm sure there's some lying going on to seem more preferable. I for one, wasn't surveyed, so this has to be false.

That's just lame, to be going to buy a device that wasn't even announced yet, without specs, design and all. I hereby declare this survey null and void. Perhaps it was carried out in a fanboy camp, wich makes it irrelevant. 100% of my 3 friends going to buy Nexus Prime, so does it mean it'll take 100% market share??

Not everyone is obsessed over specs. Apple does have (a somewhat deserved) reputation of releasing great, high-quality smartphones, that's enough for a lot of people to go on.
Reply · 3 ·  · September 28 at 8:23am

It has worked for them so far, so there is precedence that this strategy is successful. They are operating within Apple textbook release schedule and hype machine. Quiet... wait for it... boom.

As for the specs argument, do a random poll in a public place: a mall, a train, the office, whatever and randomly ask 100 people the specs of their smartphone. Try it... it will be fun. For those of us that look at the market, the players, the technology, and yes, the specs, we deeply care and are quite passionate about it. Other people: not so much.

We tend to evaluate the specs, the models, the carriers and the majority of everyone else tends to follow marketing, social media and press. And let's not for get word of mouth, still easily the most influential. There is literally an army of well connected influencers that will fall in love with this device and the media love fest that has become a reoccurring cultural event with an Apple product launch will ensue.
