Stuff like this makes me hesitant about even entering the tech arena with an idea. It's bad enough having to worry that some large company is developing something in parallel to you, and trying to stay ahead of them through wits alone.
Seriously, patent trolls do nothing but make innovation by small-time folks like me less likely.

Wouldn't anyone die to have a name like 'McKool Smith'?

Two semi obvious patents filed on technology that was developed by someone else and already under serious development/production by the time the patent was filed. I would bet that not only did the applicant not do anything but write a patent application referencing white papers and scientific journal articles (not doing any of their own research), but I would also bet that there are at least 200 patents covering exactly the same thing (with slightly different wording).
Patents are strangling the tech industry. If I want to manufacture a device using "off the shelf" parts, why should I have to have a direct license on patents that my component suppliers already pay fees on? And even if I take that license, I can still be sued by a patent troll with a vaguely related patent that purports to cover the same technology as what I have already licensed? No thank you.

Why didn't one of the manufacturers buy MOSAID? 1/5 billion is a lot less than 4.5 billion so it's not outside their price range.
