Not including stock and bonus makes this data useless. The vast majority of the compensation packages of the companies on that list comes from stock. Particularly for engineers.

The salary data must be useful to someone (HR recruiters) or else these companies would be paying employees only in stock.

lol...I haven't had any stock options be worth anything substantial yet :-P

how is it better than glassdoor.com?
Reply · 7 · · September 29 at 7:54pm

The figures on Glassdoor are disclosed by the people voluntarily ...while here the site has done some research to come up with the actual figures....that should be it right?

I'm not sure if it is more accurate, though. H1Bs are a small portion of the workforce. Also with glassdoor you can see the range of salaries for each position (and it tends to vary by a huge amount!) You can also narrow the search by years of experience. I think that as long as there are a large number of people giving data, then glassdoor will be pretty accurate (although there is always the possibility of selection bias).
Also, the site doesn't seem to be working properly at the moment. If I type google into the company name, it doesn't seem to narrow the results at all. Adding a city doesn't seem to do anything either.

If you are making $86K/yr and working in Silicon Valley, that is like making $30K/yr living in Arkansas. Cost of living is very high in Silicon Valley and other parts of California. If companies are paying over $100K that are based in Silicone Valley area, that is like $45K - $50K in lower cost of living areas.

you can take the experience from, let's say google to create your own company, or to use it as a booster for other jobs in the future. Also, they treat their employees like Kings and Queens due to the need to hold on to the most valuable members of the tech world. Also, as certain people have said above, the stock options I'm sure are phenomenal.

Aaron Kinsman The stock options are not limited to silicon valley. You are right, its a good place to start and it looks good on your resume. Other than that, anything less than 120k anywhere in California = 50k in Texas or other places. In Sili-valley its worth even less...

Youre off a bit. Salary.com says employers in Little Rock pay only ~26% less than in San Francisco. So your $86K/yr in SF pays more like $64K/yr in Arkansas. The part that is upsetting though is Arkansas cost of living is 46% less than SF. End of the day you get a lot more bang for your buck but then again you would be living in Arkansas :-).

"...people who want to make crazy shit" Unfortunately, not anymore. More like "...people who want to make crazily overhyped shit that does next to nothing". 1990s brought the internet, VoIP, instant messaging, social networks, heaps of other stuff. What about the last 3-4 years? Twitter / Groupon? Ah yes, Color and Box.net.

If by "mobile" you mean mobile communications, then no. I had a mobile phone 11 years ago. If by "mobile" you mean Angry Birds and Facebook apps which MG is so obsessed with, then it is exactly my point.

Frantzdy Samael Romain Was just amused thats all.....Just curious what is a real coder in terms of web development? What would you use to develop a site like Techcompanypay? If you dont use a SQL db and you dont use scripting of any kind what would you use? Just curious. I like Python myself but this site was created in PHP. I guess I dont know how to create a web application without scripting. I guess im a kiddie and you are the expert software developer so would love your advice. Thanks in advance :-) lol

I don't agree.
H1B positions are usually underpaid and don't have the same benefits comparing to other employees.

Pavel Senko Does not apply to software engineers in the valley. Good guys are not in the job market at all. You want to make sure that they are happy once you find them and hire them.
Reply · · September 29 at 10:15pm

Nikola Jevtic I have examples, which contradict your theory.
For instance, I know a guy who is earning ~$80K / year and is an excellent software engineer with 6+ years of experience (Java + LAMP + Flash). Similar non-H1B peers get at least $110-120K / year.

You have to understand that these businesses are doing everything they can to recruit the toppest of the top talent in silicon valley. But if you're Google, you don't necessarily have to spit out the cash because the google environment, like apple, is more pleasing than the pay.

Compensated by the perks. If you get highly motivated people who love what

David Stone That is why I quit. If you are a good engineer in the valley, your true worth is $150+K + stock. Do not sign on for anything less, irrespective of how good the food or the massages!
