Baidu Looks To Leapfrog Google With Cloud-Based Mobile OS (Update)

John Linden
Pretty sure the China Unicom and China Mobile numbers are missing a few decimal places. Shouldn't that be 200M and 600M?

Who cares if iPhone boots for 45 seconds when you boot only when you update. Silly statement.

And if you're one of those people (like my parents) who like to turn their phone off at night or when not in use to save the battery? Not so silly. Not all users think the same way.

Yeah, it all depends how often you use it. Those 45 seconds of boot-up use power but even more valuable, your time.

But the double-smart option for your folks is to put it on the charger, completely silenced, collecting “tried to call you” notices, etc. Always ready to go when you pick it up, battery fully charged. (Electricity cost: pennies/year)

Bad news for Google, but no need to worry, my friends. I have got some good news for you.Not for Google. You may even like it and want to be my partner too. So please keep on reading here. I want to build Watson internet to transform our world and free it from the slavery and corruption and all terrible evils in our lives on the world and lift mankind into a nexgen civilization. Our world will be free of wars, diseases, hunger, poverty, crises, dictators, corruption, crimes and of dangers of cosmic collision and radiaton too. That is why I am seeking partners to make a Watson search engine. However, greedy IBM is vasting Tax dollars from the Department of Defence on its so called first cognitive chip. IBM is lying when it says it is the beginning of a new era in computing. If you look at the pieces here you will see that 50 year...See More

Duh... we will have competition from the most populous nation on earth, and for Google, whose search engine has been banned from many parts of China over time, its even more fitting to expect that they be challenged by the home team search engine firm there.

But people - enough micromanagement already - don't you think? Baidu is a company based around a search engine. And as we know, Google is way more than that. Google is a creator of ecosystems - and that trumps search-only by 25000 miles, even on a bad day.

One trump card does not a strategic advantage make, and Google is not exactly the archtypical sit-on-your-hands-until-disaster-strikes type of company are they. Also, don't forget that the purpose of Android is to assure non-denominational (eg by phone type) customer access to Google and unrestricted access to Google isn't allowed in most of China, so for Baidu to pre-empt Android in China is just not a big deal.

Baidu has a long, long way to go to catch up and become superior to Google in every place and in every way that matters. Yes, with enough attention and funding from China, Inc - it's possible they could get there, but I have seen nothing that puts world dominance of phone OS at the top of the China wish list, so I wouldn't be shorting Google just yet (at least not becuase of this).

I don't suppose that Kǒng Zǐ (Confucius)'s saying that “the journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step” came to mind?

Baidu has no need to “become superior to Google in every place and in every way that matters.”

Actually, if they want to survive without continued dependence on the political partronage of their home state - they do. That's the nature of global competition.

“Right now when you power on an iPhone, it takes 45 seconds before you can do anything,” he said. “In the future, one second, you turn on the device, and you can start using the box. That’s our mission for the future of the internet.” His plan is to build an OS that uses search as the basis for everything. “

Can you imagine , if whole western market start to use Baidu instead Google. This will be earthly heaven. The Chines monopolistic idiots haven't idea of the free market, but promise a future better of it.

So basically it will be like almost all other software that comes from China, completely unable to be exported to the rest of the world.

CEO Li's statement (full version) should be: “In the future (when Google have open-sourced their one-second-launching OS), one second, you turn on the (Baidu) device, and you can start using the box. That’s our mission for the future of the internet.” ;-)
