If anyone's interested in what the OEM version is actually called, it's a Teclast T760. It's internals are exactly the same, even the exterior, save for the change of badge and prints here and there. You can search it from sites like AliExpress and HotMID.

Been using one under the parent name, Teclast T760 for about 5 months now. I bought it as a disposable device for my kids. It turned out that it was actually very nice to use, and durable.

Regarding the findings in the review, here are my findings after 5 months use.

- Build quality is good.
- There are no problems with the sound jack, buzzing, whatnot. Perhaps they got a dud device, so at worst QC may need tweaking.
- The OS build for the device is mildly tweaked standard SDK from the platform maker Rokchip, and it is updated on a monthly basis.
- Teclast T760 firmwares are available at Teclast, while rooted firmwares also exists with custom ROMs being released on a steady basis. T760 firmware can be flashed to Andypad (but screen orientation is reversed by 270 degrees, can be fixed by tweaking firmware file)
- Gooogle Market 3.1.5 works very well for both paid and free apps
- Interface is sluggish compared to the actual speed of the device, can be fixed by installing alternative launcher. Apparently Firmware v3.0 fixes this issue. I have yet to try it
- Screen is glossy
- There is a world beyond the USA where subsidized (carrier, or manufacturer) devices are not made available so the price is very good given the performance

Found this statement from the MD of andypad, dont know if its a big deal or not

Dear Andy Pad customers,As
you may or may not be aware, our first batches of Andy Pads come with
an unlicensed version of Android Marketplace. The statement will explain
the reasoning behind this.

As we all know, it is very important for tablet/mobile devices to have
an App Store installed. The end-user experience can be seriously harmed
if this kind of software is not included, and we went through the normal
routine of acquiring Android Marketplace.

It soon became clear that Android Marketplace is tied up with “Big
Brands” who have strangled the market, making customers choose their
products over smaller brands such as Andy Pad. We felt this was unfair,
not just towards us as a manufacturer, but to the customers that cannot
afford to spend hundreds of pounds on these higher end devices that can
actually be produced for the customer at a much cheaper price. I
therefore took the decision to add an unlicensed version of Android
Marketplace.

There is a David and Goliath situation here, and we felt that we were
doing a favour to the community as well as ourselves. I have spent
millions of pounds on Google AdWords over the years and felt this would
only help Google’s revenue by having Android Marketplace on the Andy Pad
as this would clearly stretch Google’s reach over the market.

I think it is important to note that we intentionally never included
Android Marketplace in our official advertising. We did not want to sell
the devices on the basis that it came with any Marketplace installed.

Our plan is to put Amazon Marketplace on the devices once it is
available. Ideally we would like to see Google’s ‘open-source’ operating
system reach its full potential, and hopefully we have helped them to
achieve that. This is not to be seen as an underhand swipe at Google,
but more an attempt to bring balance to the technology market. We are
still in the process of trying to get Android Marketplace officially
licensed for the Andy Pad.

I would also like to take this opportunity to say thank-you to all the
customers and the community that have supported Andy Pad through its
first launch. We have been blown away by the great response that we have
received from the community and developers alike.

If there is any further news or discussions, rest assured you will know immediately.

Yours Faithfully,

Andrew Kerry
Managing Director

The thing does exactly what he needs (a quick browse on the sofa, a youtube video and a game or two) when he doesn't want to put the desktop pc on. I don't think it's something a lot of people here would consider over some of the higher end tablets available, but it does meet the needs of a large portion of people considering a tablet.

To quote this article: "checking your emails on a shiny new device (worth two months pay)".

Who makes $200 per month?  Unless you are suggesting that a tablet should be compared to a laptop in the $2,000-4,000 range?  I'm pretty sure the meat of that market is still ~$1,000 and I certainly hope any high school graduate can make more than $500 per month.

I'd also point out that at $280 it is barely cheaper than the established competition in the US - I'd probably pop an extra $50-100 to get a brand with some history and therefore likely to have future support if needed. Or a used iPad...

Hyperbole - what engadget writers should use less of.

If he's interested in the summary its because he may want a brief overview... that's supposedly the point of that sort of feature. Its a busy world and that is a completely expected and appropriate user need. Your impolite comment does neither you, nor the designers and editors of the site any favors to push the design to be more user focused and useful.

And he's right, "some bad design decisions" as a con is so obtuse and vague as to be of practically no value in an overview. And the conclusion further compounds the shades of grey rather than stake out any real position on the device.

Ruiz 3 days ago in reply to Chris Daltas
I agree, they just really need to re-think the way that they do these reviews. I've never heard of a good review system not having a number or star rating score. In Engadget's reviews and scorecards, the only thing I keep reading over and over again is "This product is great at this, but it's bad at this." WTF does that tell me? They constantly keep trying to balance the pros and cons of every product they review and it's unfair, especially to the finely made products that deserve a better review. If a product is shit, tell me it's shit. Don't go around making a piece of turd look edible, you're fooling nobody Engadget.

Anddd a number tells you so much more than a list of pros and cons? It's good that it's balanced out, because everyone weighs the cons and pros differently, to me cheap build quality, no HC and crappy design means a lot more to me than a million pros if it had that many. When they have the number system everyone complains because it's unfair, now it's just unbiased pros and cons and people are still complaining, don't like the review system? Then stop looking at it and find another site that does it better.
REPORT

Sharkit 3 days ago in reply to Haithem Obeidi
Engadget removed the numbers because it was killing their hits. If you see a review gets less than 8, you don't even bother clicking on the link. Now they have removed the ratings they get the clicks, even if all you do is scroll to the bottom and read the pro and cons.

As for the Andypad, nice idea, but if it really is a cheap tablet for the kids, then it needs better build quality. And for most people buying something second hand would be a better idea. The Touchpad firesale must've wiped out  half their potential market, and the potential for another with the Playbook isn't going to help them either. Then there's the Kindle Fire, slightly different machine, but in the end for browsing, games, email you are covered and then the goodness of a Kindle, not going to be easy for them when it comes to the UK.
REPORT
+

Ruiz 3 days ago in reply to Haithem Obeidi
In a sense it does. A list of pros and cons doesn't explain anything if they keep balancing it out. If a product is bad, just say it's bad, stop sugar-coating it with good things so that it doesn't seem as bad. If a product is great, then just say it's great, stop trying to find bad things to say about it, especially when those bad things end up being subjective. I know you were being cliche when saying "Don't like the review system? Find another one.", but seeing how bad these reviews have become, it seems like only the best thing to do.

You need bezel on a touchpad in order to be able to hold it without hitting the touchscreen.
What I like about this device is the raised edge on top; since you have to hold it with the edge of your fingers, this helps prevent it from slipping out of your grasp (when held one-handed).  Devices that have a rounded off top edge make no sense - they want to slip right out of your grasp.

I don't know...$280 seems kind of steep for what looks to be a throwaway tablet with limited functionality.  The lede to the review seems to suggest the niche is for a kid-friendly tablet.  The AndyPad doesn't appear to target that niche.

As for comparisons to the Kindle Fire, the AndyPad has a camera which helps differentiate it.  On the other hand, you have the Fire supported by Amazon, whereas this tablet is made by a guy who makes bedding.

Scores are nice, but one persons 6 might be another persons 9, depending on what qualities are important to you. Personally, I'm happy we don't have to deal with "it deserved a ___ because the ________ got a ___" comments anymore.

There is absolutely no point to this device now that Amazon has released the Kindle Fire. Even before that, you had the B&N Nook Color that could be rooted and loaded with a custom ROM that made it a full-fledged Android tablet for under $300.

We're talking about a device thats primarily available in the UK.

Where we can't get the Fire.  Or even officially get the Nook colour.  We have cheaper/better options already available (Hanspree Hannspad, £150).

My kids have been using ipad since it first was released.  They are now 5 and 2.  No cracks, or other damage.  My wife, on the other hand, has gone through 2 iphones in the same amount of time.  Little kids can easily carry the ipad and even if they drop it, it's from 1 ft off the ground, nothing a good case can't handle.  The available software is amazing and having it means the parents get to change the tv from kids shows occassionaly.

Seriously, ipad isn't even close to being expensive for a kid when you compare, for instance, app prices and wii games.  It's no contest.  The author's quip about '2 month's' salary, really got me. If $400 is 2 months salary, then your kids aren't getting this andypad thing, either.

Always preferred the Sony Readers. Organization on the kindles is a mess. I agree they offer the "total package" but for us non-americans, the Amazon service really wasn't that big a draw (whispernet is working where i live now so I can't fault them on that any longer). So what was left was the hardware, and compared to the Reader it was a no brainer.

Prices aren't significantly higher in the UK, it just happens that the dollar exchange rate is poor from a UK perspective and prices in the UK always include VAT (similar to US sales tax) currently at 20%.
REPORT

Stelios Miltiadou 3 days ago in reply to markbriton
I only wish it was just VAT (and a little bit of transportation).
As an example:

"new" base level Kindle for America - $79. Pop over to Amazon from the UK, we're looking at £89.

Happy to be put right but that seems like a significantly higher price, even with VAT, as a straight conversion of $s to £s would equate to £50.72.

This would be £61 pounds (rounding up) with VAT on.Even with shipping on it (at an extreme, say $20), this should still only be £63.56 net, £76.27 gross... not £89.

EDIT - added a bit of space so that it wasn't just a pile of text and numbers!

That base level Kindle at $79 is ad supported.  The non-ad supported variant has a price that comes in a few £ different to the UK version.  Think it equates to around £85.  Not bad at all.

Even mattress salesmen skin Android?

Is the "Google Experience" device a dead concept? Or do we have to stick to the Nexus line-up only? I've heard rumors that Verizon is even skinning and allowing bloatware on the Nexus Prime.

Let me end that rumor my friend: http://phandroid.com/2011/09/2...

I could see how that rumor got started because Verizon has only offered one stock Android device and they even changed it's first update(2.1) by taking some things out.

Thanks and it's a case where I certainly wanted to be proven wrong.

Even Verizon's co-first deivce of two (the Droid Eris) was skinned and bloated. My Verizon Droid 1 has stood the test of time with its stock Gingerbread ROM. Looks like the Nexus Prime will be the appropriate upgrade.
