Android Beats iOS In European Smartphone Market Share, Still Behind Symbian

Michal W. Sterzycki · Manchester, Connecticut
Hey Chris, iPhone marketshare does not equal iOS marketshare. Please change your headline. The chart you cite is clearly talking about smartphone marketshare. These reports don't usually include iPod touches, iPads, or Android tablets/PMPs, but those numbers clearly contribute towards sales in the respective App markets.

I'm willing to bet that more app developers read TechCrunch closely than those who care strictly about smartphone marketshare (people in the wireless carrier industry).

A correct headline would be "Android beats iPhone" or, more accurately, "Android beats iOS in Smartphone marketshare". Still better: report actual OS marketshare.

I also could not figure out, every time I see a chart Microsoft marketshare declines. It is both true in USA and Europe. Only charts I see that WP7 gains something are ad impressions and app count. So it seems even it is beginning for WP7, it does not only not to be sold(or maybe it is sold, but given the fact that smartphone market is growing incredibly, WP7's impact just is not seen.) but also loses marketshare. Is it really possible for MS to change the game?

İnan Madak winmo is still counted, and people are shifting from winmo to android and iphone.. wp7 isn't widely available in eu.

Why does the article mention Apple gaining market share, while RIM gained even more market share than Apple without a mention at all? The reporting makes no sense.

frankly, I'm not surprised. It's pratically a given that Android will have more market share. I mean come on, it's ONE Apple smartphone vs a LEGION(more or less) of Android smartphones, are you seriously going to tell me that one operating system running on one phone will beat one operating system running on many? What I think is that Android has the most market share(due to many cell phones) while Apple's iPhone(iOS) is the top selling smartphone...please correct me if I'm wrong..

to clarify. When I said top selling smartphone, I meant by the results given by the research firm NPD. Oh, and here's a link to O.S market share also according to NPD.....

Android = Windows PC, all PC makers sell millions of Windows-based PCs, who profit the most? Apple profit more than Dell, HP and any other pc maker, so Android? Apple gets the 66% of all mobile phone including All Android-based smartphone makers together, 1948 won't be like 1984. This is the real fact behind this amazing grow and worse, HTC is thinking about getting its own mobile OS, Samsung is tweaking its BadAss OS, reason? Googlerola will be taking away market from its own partners and none of them want to feel like a second-class Android citizen. Apple is out to profit not get Marketshare and the mac is the proof, being behind Windows in marketshare for years, Apple has enjoyed a better profit margin than those selling beige PCs.

OH great, now how much of that profit will be yours??? I can not believe people taking pride in being taken to the cleaners. Remember that all those are made in the same factories in china, but yet one company makes 5 times more profit and you the customer are so happy about it. well with competition we the customers win.

Bill K Gwanyalla At least, a healthy iOS platform could benefit developers and in a matter of day I could profit from the iOS, I am launching my first iPhone app and working on the iPad version, so Android? I have read a lot of bad stories about developers no being benefited from Android, poor sales compared with its growing ecosystem, piracy and more, so in the end, I won't be getting all those billions from Apple, but I could get a tiny fraction based on my own work or offering, that's the idea, Android is bigger and better, but developers (me included) could get a better chance of profiting from the smaller iOS and you know, I like it that way.

Actually, in Q2 sales Symbian collapsed to around 15%. Android accounted for almost half of all shipments and in turn Samsung sold close to half of all Android phones. But user base always changes more slowly than quarter-to-quarter sales.
