Why eating more than half a sausage a day is dangerous: Processed meats linked to higher risk of cancer, heart disease in large European study
I was raised of German Heritage. Wow, we were farmers, and organ meats were a big part of our diet. Longevity in our family has been long, with respect to age. My gut is the antibiotics in livestock today is the issue. We never had access to feeding our livestock antibiotics. Our poultry was barn yard raises, and tasted much better than these antibiotic confined chickens we get today, in pretty packages at the super market. This is not rocket science.
WesternSon
It's mainly the Nitrates and chemicals that are being used to process the meats, and the preservatives added to increase shelf life.
Susan Rogan
Antibiotics to keep them alive in the sickening conditions they are confined in, nitrates to keep the meat from rotting before you get a chance to eat it after they are killed. Lovely industry.
canali
like DUH...what do you expect, given what is in those meats?!...sure we love the taste, but given the very high amts of nitrates and saturted fats etc that is in them, only on occasion.
Susan Rogan
We love the taste? Maybe I know too much. I seriously would not eat a hot dog if you paid me $500. Over that amount, I would consider it just for the money.
primenumbers
If you want high nitrates look at celery, and of course, other studies have shown saturated fat isn't harmful, including this one (go read it - meat and it's associated fat was not correlated with increased risk).
Susan Rogan
This article suggests that 'no more than 19.9g per day' of meat should be eaten. That is less than an ounce, an ounce being 28 grams. Can't be that healthy my friend. I will go read the study though.
canali
what kind of crack are you on? celery has high amts of nitrates...lmao....what's next, that broccoli is dangerous too....give your head a shake...you must work for the industry
primenumbers
Of course it does, which is why some cured meats are advertised as having no added nitrates due to their use of celery juice instead (which just happens to include enough nitrates to cure the meat).

I believe hot dog is the worst out of all processed meat items. Only God knows what is inside this dog thing, but i am certain it is carcinogenic.
Susan Rogan
I am sure it is disgusting, whether or not carcinogenic.

A new study shows 'living' causes cancer. Researchers recommend avoiding 'living' to reduce the risk of getting cancer.

I am not sure if National Post reads any of these comments, but you really need to change your headline and description of this story. The study clearly doesn't 'prove a causal link'. I am not trying to insult Lilian Asante, but you need to make sure your writers have a good background in science and scientific literature. This study says right in the conclusion that it supports a 'moderate positive association' between processed meat consumption and mortality. Correlation and causation are two entirely different things as anyone who has taken a statistics course can tell you.
primenumbers
Such mistakes as conflating correlation with causation are typical in diet study related stories. But this is perhaps one of the worst examples I've seen.
Susan Rogan
She does say that the, 'lifestyle choices' of the processed meat eaters, 'accelerate the mortality', if that helps.
primenumbers
"A new European study has found a causal link " - wrong. The study didn't (and cannot) show causation. Lilian Asante, if you're going to report on dietary studies you need to learn the difference between an epidemiological study (which this was - they can help generate hypothesis, can show correlation, but not show causation) and an intervention study (which can actually show causation). You also need to learn that diet studies that rely on food questionnaires (as this one does) are woefully problematic and suffer from the fact that people under-report eating food that people consider bad (like processed meats) and under report eating food which they consider good, thus grossly biasing the statistics, even if they can accurately remember what they've eaten over the years (which they can't).
Gerold Russello
Eat natural and avoid sugars and excess carbs and you will be healthy!! Plain and simple.
hard kore
All processed meat and feed lot animals are shittttttttt
Sassylassie
Never touch the stuff, if I want a ham sandwich I cook a ham. The processed stuff taste like over salted cod.

Nutritionists have been after processed meats for years, they won't rest easy until we are all forced to eat tofu loaf. just remember next time you are in hospital and are enjoying the fine cuisine ,that a nutritionist with many years of training, has laboured to produce such bland unappealing slop.
primenumbers
And it was the nutritionists that encouraged margarine over butter but of course we know better now due to proper scientific studies, not fatally flawed studies such as the one referenced above.

Who in the world pays these peole to wright such crap ===and why ?
ProudCanuck
"wright such crap"...write such crap, maybe?
Actually, I didn't mind the article.
