Ottawa aims for lower consumer rates in wireless auction

Q_Impact
It doesn't matter who wins in the auction, Rogers will buy them out a couple of years later and jack up the rates.

Torontodude
and it will market it under the cell phone businesses old name, giving the illusion of competition (like Bell and Virgin Canada).
Herbleberble
The quality of my Virgin Mobile service declined in short order.
Greg
The government doesn't care about lower wireless rates for Canadian. They just want the billions of dollars from the spectrum auction to help fill their empty coffers.

What a great plan. Why not do the same thing for cars, since we pay way more for the same cars as Americans do. Or how about food and cloths and everything else.
yamaha330
It's not about a comparison with the states. It's about how we're paying insane bills in Canada for our Canadian phone services for which the companies collaborate to raise prices..
You can blame our trade agreements for our higher costs of everything else.

How is this suppose to add more start-up companies? The spectrum is up for AUCTION. Are these people in the government just stupid? What it means it that is goes to the highest bidder, or in other words to the 3 that already have a strangle hold on the market as they have the financial backing that a start-up (smaller) company will not.
LongJohns454
I will believe it when I see it...right now the operative word is "plan" - nothing is written in stone yet.

Stop with the delays in fixing this huge rip off of Canadians hard earned money. Competition doesn't work, the big 3 just buy out the smaller companies. Legislate lower rates with caps. Canada is the most expensive country in the world and these cell phone companies are ripping us off for millions while they build new buildings with their obscene profits.

more money for government... doesn't mean less tax though....
reality cheque
just more rhetoric from the Harpoon suited drones.
VitoTrendy
so now there will be 5G LTE networks?
Dwight Jones
Use it for public access WiFI instead if you truly are seeking competition).
Otherwise, sell off the people's property one more time.
