Facebook Marketing Guide Facebook Launches Suggested Events Feature Based On Checkins | TechCrunch
@Ezechel Trifan
Big brother: Ok, thank you for checking in places, you helped me find out so much about you. No let ME tell you how you should REALLY spend your time! :-)
@Robert Scoble
Too bad I can't import all my Foursquare checkins to Facebook. I've done more than 2300 checkins on Foursquare while only a few dozen on Facebook. But cool feature anyway. I'll definitely check into Facebook more often now. Will be interesting to see how good it is when I check into Yosemite or Munich in January.
@Isaiah Weddle
Robert, do you feel more comfortable checking into Facebook (where your friends are) or Foursquare (focused service, "our little thing") Essentially the feature is identical.
@Xavier Ramirez
Agreed on the Foursquare aspect. Didn't they remove Facebook Places though? PS... This is kinda whack... So now you have Facebook and people who don't even live in your area spamming your events feed?
@Jon Lefave
Xavier Ramirez Gonna go out on a limb here and say that event location will have heavy weighting. IE. A college student from Toronto probably won't care too much about a frat party in L.A. that a friend is attending, so it'll reflect that. The thing with 4sq is that its extremely niche and hasn't captured a mainstream audience yet from either users or businesses. @Isaiah Weddle: FB can be as focused as you want it to be with custom lists. I've got a list of buddies that usually hit the town with me, so my check-ins at night just go to them.
@Xavier Ramirez
Jon Lefave I'm definitely interested to see how it plays out. All of the bands I work with use BandsInTown to create and promote their facebook events so it could bring more people out to shows. But in general, I've seen Event RSVPs drop dramatically over the past 6 months. Just too many events that don't mean squat to anyone being spammed to everyone.
@Chris Grayson
To me this looks more likely to hurt the business of startups like Plancast than Foursquare. It also gives Facebook an angle at business models like Eventbrite, if they ever care to veer in that direction.
@Stan Chili Palmer
Jon Lefave : but what about people who are not as lucky as you and are looking for people and new friends to discover great things based on the same preferences and interests. Even our friends don´t often reflect our interests, so sometimes people feel alone if it is coming to dancing, or painting or cooking etc. There are great services like RAVN and Sosh, which been covered here in TC before, which do solve this exactly problem! So maybe FB will buy them sometime:)) What you think?? Oh yeah, and Fsq is way more about just places and not events or activities, right?
@Michael Bauser
Xavier Ramirez - They didn't remove Facebook Pages, but they got rid of the "check-in" as an object type distinct from status updates. Now, any status update or photo tagged with a Facebook Pages location counts as a "check-in" for most purposes.
@Isaiah Weddle
Yeah because everyone knows HOW FUN & AWESOME FACEBOOK EVENTS ARE. Seriously, Facebook doesn't get it. Foursquare is doing this too, its machine-based "suggestions" and totally SLIMECORP.
@Bailey Jones
Did you even read the article? There's way more events on Facebook. It's actually pretty nifty because it caters to your interests. Example, if I checked into an art class a week ago, chances are I'll probably attend another one if I knew about the next event. That, and no one really uses foursquare. So this should be much more useful.
@Isaiah Weddle
I did read the article. Comparatively there are a lot more users on Facebook and therefore more Events. I was saying that using an algorithm to scrape your behavior and feed results back to you is clunky, cold, and counter-intuitive. A Real Human Being can see through this contrived function and any pseudo utility as a result will be readily dismissed. Features should be executed from the bottom up not the top down.
@Isaiah Weddle
By the way you only have 5 friends On Facebook so clearly this feature isn't for you anyways.
@Bailey Jones
Isaiah Weddle Nope, still don't think you've read the article, since Suggested Events doesn't rely on how many facebook friends you have. PS. I turned down your friend request to be #6. Sorry.
@Omid Aziz
Thanks.
@Louis Mason
jack of all trades, master of none.
@Angelo Asignacion
I really thought this is a good idea and I bet that many FB users will be able to be informed with the event they might be really interested with! Cheers! Visit Crumblrr today!
@Duane Larkin
I've been a heavy Foursquare user but frankly, what do I get out of it? Nothing. With the most recent FS update for my Android, I can't add any new locations if FS doesn't find them...so I think it's time to drop it and keep my FB checkins instead.
@Stefano Petri
"I can't add any new locations if FS" Of course you can! There is a big (+) sign on the bottom of place list to add a new venue!
@Duane Larkin
Stefano Petri Not on my Droid Charge, after today's update. All I have now is Refresh.
@Stefano Petri
Duane Larkin I updated today as well (HTC Legend). When I check after the update, the Add Venue button was at the bottom of the list of nearby places! I swear! Now it's not there anymore! It might be because when I looked the first time, there weren't many venues around. Now I'm in a crowded place and no button for me. Weird...
@Jon Lefave
Stefano Petri Doesn't work for me either. Maybe 4sq feels that they have enough data and will only let super-users add new locations?
@Stefano Petri
Jon Lefave I found out! The Add Venue button is only present AFTER you search for a place! It's at the bottom of search results. A bad place imho... If you want to add for example your home, obviously you don't search for it first! XD
@Joe Dawson
I don't think it's going to get more people out of their houses to attend concerts, club nights, and conferences. I head out to socialise and experience live music regularly, not because Facebook tells me there's an event. What needs to happen is recommendations based on listening history, like Last.fm because that would increase value. I agree with Robert Scoble about importing Foursquare although not sure how many restaurants and coffee houses host noteable events!
@Tony Too Cüte
I personally like foursquare. I don't see why they don't just team up with facebook and really take over the game. It's way more simpler that way. I'd rather die than use the corny check in features that facebook got. Just a note of thought.
@John Boyd
Cool. Just checked out. Only relevant one was "New Years at Phao in Sag Harbor". Likely not enough data for me. Don't get around much anymore.
@David Kinghorn
Pretty cool. It suggests some pretty interesting events for me, whereas before it mostly suggested garbage... Not sure if this is true for everyone or not.
@Brian Zisk
Nice feature!
@Michael Bauser
It's also suggesting events created by pages I "like," which means I'm seeing lots of concerts in strange places I'll never go. It's also suggesting every concert scheduled at the House of Blues Cleveland, apparently because I have two photos at that location, and that makes it the only music venue I've ever "checked in" at. So those of you who (like me) don't use Facebook Places check-ins just need to remember to tag your photos properly, I guess.
@Sudarshan Pant
suggesting events based on checking history can be fun.. I think I should use Facebook checkin more often.
@Snook Chaipornvadee
definitely one of the most impressive features rolled out recently by facebook for sure. yes, I like this more than timeline.
@Martin Shen
Thanks for the mention back to UpOut! I look forward to see this develop further!
@Jeff 'Digi' Lange
Very cool feature to help discover the unknown.
@Michael Rosenthal
There are apps that will read in your iTunes and Pandora info and then alert you when bands you have listened to are coming to town. Combining checkins and social graph creates a much richer experience. It would be nice if you can select a place, for instance, I am traveling to NYC for the holidays, what places should I go and what bands are playing? I always thought Pandora should build an app the used the Genome to suggest bands playing in my area that I would be interested in, based on my profile.
