LIVE Air Traffic on Google Earth!

He-he... Google acquired ZipDash, a startup with technology very similar to Inrix, back in 2005, and let it perish inside (remember Dodgeball, Jaiku, etc.). Now, 6 yrs later, it has to license the technology it once bought. Oh, well, M&A, the most efficient way to destroy companies, and shareholder value...

How similar ZipDash really was to Inrix i.e. did they have anywhere near "30 million sources", presumably more precise and moving more then people's mobile phones?

I founded Zipdash. We thrived within Google.
We launched Google Maps for mobile for seven different mobile platforms, grew usage to many millions of users, localized to 40 languages, launched location data collection which led to My Location, launched traffic on mobile and desktop, received an internal award for our team's efforts, etc.
I left Google two years ago and the traffic service has been offloaded a couple of times in the last few years so I don't know the details behind this deal but my guess is that inrix is happy to have google as a customer and google is happy to get even more data.
BTW, I saw Dodgeball and Jaiku fail up close. In my opinion their failures weren't Google's fault.

I follow Inrix since 2005. Chairmain & CEO Bryan Mistele got the rights to the patented Microsoft traffic analysis & prediction technology as an exit package, through Microsoft's IP Ventures program, in return for a certain royalty. http://www.inrix.com/news_InrixWSJ_5Oct2005.asp Funny how Google now will exploit this.

I'm seeing traffic data on Google Maps right now, and have been all summer. In Boston, at least, it doesn't appear to have been removed.
