Apple really doesn't care for innovative competition.

You have it exactly backwards. They want innovative competition, not a copy of their own product.

It's a tablet. How different can you get? The galaxy tab looks nothing like the iPad in hardware or software, speaking within reason, as again, you can only change so much. As linked below, you can't realistically say that it's a copy of the iPad.

For me, the other manufacturers have shown that you can make tablets that look nothing like the iPad. And let's not forget, that Samsung redesigned their tablet because of the iPad2 presentation. No wonder their design is inspired by said iPad2.

All this publicity for the Tab makes me think it must be nearly as good and perhaps I should get one...

As you're resident Aussie, and I have to say while despising the fact this case is even wasting a judges time.....
I'm starting to hear alot of talk among commoners about samsung products being so good apple is suing them because they can't match them...
Obviously us tech heads have thought this for awhile... But to hear a 40 year old wife telling her husband it in a telstra store the other day made me chuckle.
Are these cases having the opposite of the intended effect?

Agreed x2 (and another Aussie). The more of these Apple lawsuits I see, the more it makes me want to buy the competitors products. I am not anti-Apple, I have a nice schmick new Macbook Pro, but I am in the market for my first smart phone and tablet and I am holding off on getting Apple products because of their attitude in the marketplace. A walled garden for user experience is one thing, a completely walled marketplace is another.

I don't get this. Why would it be a bad thing that the Galaxy Tab is hurting iPad sales? It's a competing product, that's it's purpose. Apple's whole lawsuit is ridiculous. Did Sony sue Apple when Apple stole the idea for island style keyboards? Did Palm sue Apple when iOS looked exactly like Palm OS from the 90's? Apple is just a childish school yard bully, and they need to be knocked down a notch or two.

And Palm copied the Apple Newton that came out a full 3 years earlier.

How different do the other tables look? What about the new one from Toshiba? A tablet looks like a tablet. And again, the Samsung has a bigger screen, is 16:10, you hold it differently, it runs a different software. What else can you change? So Samsung gets sued because they are able to make a thinner tablet then Apple? I think tor edesign a Tablet in a few months and beat Apple, that shows how good a company is. Btw, Apple is not really buildingtheir products, isn't it. Not like Samsung.

You can get bogged down in the details all you want, but the basic facts are this - and everyone knows it;.
Apple invented the tablet (that actually works well and people want to buy), and everyone else is copying it to some degree.
Samsung went too far and Apple drew the line. The rest is just tussling and semantics.
Apple aren't trying to crush the competition - there really isn't any yet. They are crushing the trend toward shameless copying of their inspired ideas before it gets out of control.

Semantics Nazi says - What you meant to say was, "Apple single handedly created the consumer market for tablets..." for which they deserve their every success. But that is not enough reason to block competitors. Those that can't compete, litigate. And the prior art is abundant. My iPad 2 looks remarkably like my 2007 LCD TV (minus the stand).

"Similar function and appearance"? I guess every single TV manufacturer should shut down except for the one with the most market share - because the rest are all infringing on that one's sales stream. Pure garbage. Sit down, Apple.

Whatever happens I believe that Samsung get a tons of PR and apples brand is just hurting from this. Samsung will tweak the product until they can sell it and with the amount of underdog rep they get by this it will lead to more success.. sorry Apple I believe this is the wrong way to go and you are forgetting your true heritage.

"Apple" and "innovation" don't deserve to be in the same sentence. Apple takes ideas from other companies, put them into something shiny, stamp an Apple logo on it, and sell it to hipsters.
