Amazon Kindle Lighted Leather

I'm a bit upset that Amazon didn't plan in advance to have their cases available at release of the Kindle 4. All I want is the regular case, without the light. Why do I have to wait until mid-November before I can get one? I don't like the 3rd party case which is currently available.

Yeah your right, but the light sure came in handy when our power went out for 5 days!! Time went by so fast with no TV, no internet, no nothin just the kindle. The lasting battery power is very impressive. I want a gray scale TV!

Umm, no. $20 maybe, $60 is stupid for a $79 reader.

Am sorry, but it you need a $60 light for your e-reader somethings wrong. Plus, it looks like its leeching power from the kindle?

Not used one, have you?
1. Yes, it's expensive. I still feel that nothing's particularly wrong, however.
2. Yes, it does leech power from the kindle. Most people prefer the work "draw" or "consume" as leech kinda implies that it's not designed to do so...
For me, I read in bed with the light and I /always/ fall asleep with the light left on. Pre-Kindle, this cost me a fortune in book light batteries. Post-Kindle - well, if you don't turn a page for a few mins, the Kindle turns off...and so does the light. Such a simple thing :-)
For me, this is easily worth the money. That said, new one looks much more robust. Maybe I should change up... ;-)

Thank goodness Amazon removed the cumbersome hinges from the previous generation covers and deployed innovation to create the new improved version of the lighted Kindle covers. It's convenient and well worth the money for a quality product. Check out

I hope they revisit the Kindle branded cover for the Kindle 3/Keyboard. My lower connector bent within a few weeks of using it and I always worry about the way the light slides in and out off the top corner. The design of these looks much smarter.

Not really, mostly this is just for text in black and white. It's an e-reader. If you want a nice browsing experience go look at the article on the Kindle Fire.

This was a must-have for the Kindle Keyboard if you do any serious reading at all.
Wonderful case. And now the light is centered! Huzzah!
I've genuinely never been so excited that an LED has moved 3 inches.

What happened to backlighting? I'd rather see a review of the device itself. Has anyone actually tried it?

Backlighting would sort of defeat why e-ink is so readable.

I have never used an e-reader. So without this light, you can't read in the dark. That really sucks, considering that any tablet with lcd is fully illuminated to be read in the dark. No wonder they are so cheap.
Nice feature though, but another expense that new adoptees may not know about until after purchase. So much for low price!

1. Turn out all the lights in your room 2. Read off your iPad or laptop display for a while, maybe 30 minutes, then turn it off. 3. Note the horrible burn-in on your retinas. Gah! My eyes! 4. Now try to go to sleep.
This exercise is best done with eyes over 40+.
Now do the same thing with a Kindle and its book light or your own reading lamp. Ahhhhhhhh.....

Reading a novel on an LCD is like staring into the sun.
The way your eyes read long sections of text in a book is very different to how they work when jumping around a computer screen browsing the internet: it's much, much more tiring on a backlit screen.

Having tried both (Original Nook & Sony eReader + Touchpad and Color Nook user) I can say that one is NOT better than the other.
You can't read eInk at night without a light on. However, you get NO glare under virtually any lighting.
You can't read LCD in direct sunlight. However, it is viewable in the dark.
If you read outside then eInk is the way to go. If you read in low/no light then LCD is the better option. Both have their pros and cons.
You also don't need this light. You can pick one up that does the exact same thing for $8 on eBay.

An e-ink screen with a booklight is still much easier on the eyes than a backlit LCD for most people. And this booklight doesn't ever need new batteries or fall off. And you can't forget it. Also, it disappears into the case and doesn't take any extra room.

But LCD tablets are very uncomfortable to read for long periods of time and won't last a flight from say Seattle, WA to Saint Petersburg, Russia. Just saying... LCD tablets are not the best thing for actual reading.

It's sort of inevitable. You can only get 3G free forever because the usage is so minimal (emergency browsing, and book buying).
As touch improves the experience, and as e-ink refresh rates improve, more people use 3G to actively browse. There comes a point where you can't provide that for free due to the increasing data flow.
Basically, as the experimental browser becomes more pleasant to use, you have to stop people using it. It's there to buy books and look-up.

It looks well engineered and well thought-out. The problem is I bought the new Kindle 4 because I'm on a pretty tight budget at the moment. There is no way I'm buying a $60 case for an $80 ereader. And like you wrote, it almost doubles the weight.
I picked up a nice black leather sleeve designed for the Kobo Touch, which has the same physical dimensions as the Kindle 4:
PS - you won't find a better deal for this case, I searched hard:

If it's anything like the Kindle 3/Keyboard, not much.
I mean, maybe you're talking one or two less days out of the 2 months of battery that you'll get, assuming you don't leave the wifi on all the time.

That doesn't match my usage. Using the light every night knocked a single charge for the Kindle down to about a week.
Still obviously an age, but a significant whack on the caseless usage.

Wait, what?
Not only is it a generally positive hands-on, but it's for a product that is over-expensive.
I own the Kindle Keyboard cover and, to be honest, it is good.
But it's a rip off, especially with the price of shipping to Australia.
If you found this to be negative, it wasn't because it wasn't Apple. Engadget has been positive with Kindle's. And to say that they make money off it is the final nail in your moronic coffin. Open your eyes and discover that not every negative review or hands-on is because it's a non-Apple product. It's because there are some genuine problems.

I like how the light swivels out of the center, but that price is... too high given the cost of the device.
"Should I buy 6 books or this cover?" Hmmm, tough call (not really).
