Acer Iconia Tab A501 for AT&T

jeffrey rubin 2 days ago
kindle fire? wait, folks. wait to try to do anything productivity related on a kiindle fire, which lacks 1-usb support, 2-bluetooth support. how you gonna hook up a mini keyboard to a kindle fire, and have you tried writing or editing a document using a thumb keyboard lately?

the kindle fire is a toy: watch some flicks, read some books. but you can never expect to use it for anything more serious, even in a pinch. whereas the a500, which i own and love, is a snap to connect to a mouse,a thumb drive, a usb or bluetooth keyboard, etc. that's the difference, folks.

Unless the microUSB port is of the "OTG" type, it can't act as a host port and can only be used to transfer data too/from a host device (like a PC) and won't work with a thumb drive, keyboard, etc.

They are not EXPECTING you to do any form of productivity on it anyway! The reason the Kindle Fire is priced at $200 and will sell well is because it is at the price point of a toy. Productivity on tablets is difficult and so Amazon cleverly sidestepped this with a tablet directly aimed at media consumption.

You obviously mean "Orbit" not "Rotation". 2 of the Earth's rotations is only 2 days (48 hours). The Earth's rotation describes the Earth's travel around its own axis. 2 of the Earth's orbits is 730 days (2 years). The Earth's orbit describes the Earth's travel around the Sun. Even I know that, and I'm only a wampa.

$330 on contract is actually a great deal. $330 + $15 * 24 = $690. So, for $60 dollars more than an iPad 3G you get a tablet with 2 years of internet service. Yes, I am still wondering why people buy iPads. Also, the iPad is provider locked as well.

I think the Iconia Tab a500 is one of the best deals there is in a tablet right now.  If you want it cheaper they're supposedly coming out with an 8GB model soon that'll be super cheap.  You can always upgrade the memory via the SD card port according to http://iconiatabforums.com

I've been happily using an A500 for three months. Most of the reviews fail to stress the thing that sets this, and the ToshIba Thrive, apart from the others: the built-in USB host port. This is not simply a "full size USB port", which you might find on some older USB devices, but a port that allows you connect other devices to the tablet. With the host port, I can plug in a thumbdrive or (some) hard drive for data transfer or backup, but most importantly to me, I can also connect a standard USB flash card reader, allowing me to access photos on a CF card from my DSLR. I can also view the photos (even in RAW files) on the tablet, and back them up to a microSD card. Another important feature is I can connect my DSLR with the standard USB cable that came with the camera and control the camera from the tablet for studio work - I can see the LiveView image, set the exposure and focus point and trigger the shot. As for the A501, having a 3G connection would be nice, but I think it would be better to spend the money on a mobile hotspot device, which can be used with several devices.

As I said above, the only two tablets with a USB host connector built in are the Thrive and the Iconia. Disturbingly, the newly announced Toshiba models lack this port, so maybe soon it will just be the Acer Iconoia - for anything else, you'll need an adapter module connected to the docking port.

Anyone ever noticed how Apple only seem to sue the companies who have a good chance of creating some fair competition with Apple? I mean, my god, suing the Tab 10.1 for it's likeness is unbelievable, virtually all tablets are big screens, 1 or no buttons, a black bezel and that's about it, the playbook looks like the iPad, so does the 10.1, the HP Touchpad, they all look really similar, but since the 10.1 had a good chance, it's only natural that they sue it for it's likeness, which, being that the conventional design is far too common, is a bit like suing some random guy in the street, for having the same hair colour as you. Never does Apple stop and think "Lets make a better product and try and beat the competition", no, instead it is "Lets stick with the same dated crap in our products, and if competition has a chance, let's destroy it financially"

And you will see, how much they changed the design to looks like so much an iPad. If Samsung continue to use that Galaxy Tab 7 design, Apple never need to sue Samsung. Criticizing a 5mp camera on a tablet, but apparently the iPad 2, with its currently unknown camera, must be good enough according to Engadget, although, if it can only do 1280 x 720 stills maximum, that means only 0.92mp is actually usable, and chances are it probably isn't much more than 2mp from the actual sensor. But no, clearly, this 5mp camera with flash, and as it seems, a far better lens from the image tests, has to be worse than the iPad 2. <  Insert sarcasm here.

One nice thing about the Acer is that the rooting process is simple, and appears to be very low risk. However, I haven't tried it yet. As for the price, when it first came out, it was the cheapest of it's type, especially with the 32 GB one compared to the other 32 GB models. Since then, the main competitor, the Toshiba Thrive, has dropped in price substantially, so it is now the same price (just about) as the Acer. I don't understand the Acer pricing. After being the best priced option in early July, they then had big deals in many places (typically $100 off - we bought a 16 GB for $300 and I bought my 32 GB from Costco for $350), and I thought they'd settle on something around $50 below the launch price. Instead, the list price is the same as at launch and they haven't done any real advertising, so I don't see how they expect to sell the tablet in today's market.

Sorry but a weak battery is an instant deal breaker. I don't care how great the screen looks or how fast 4G is if the battery won't let the tablet perform for at least 8 hours. The last thing I need while traveling is to be running from wall outlet to wall outlet.

A 2 year contract on a tablet is stupid. Acer will have a better and faster tablet to replace this one in 6 months to a year so why be stuck in a contract on a device that will be outdated next year....no thanks.

The battery life issue is a drain from the cellular radio even when one does not exist. It is a software flaw in Acer's Honeycomb build. Personally my A500 gets around 9 hours of use with custom software so there is hope Acer or Google will fix this in the future.

There doesn't need to be a Galaxy Tab killer.  It doesn't matter who's heard of this or that tablet.  The inevitable fact is that electronics stores are and will be flooded with tablets running Android, and all the shoppers considering an iPad will have to walk past a long row of these OTHER tablets, and might just notice the lower price tags along the way.

There doesn't need to be an iPad killer.  The iPad will lose its dominance by "death by 1000 cuts"--all of which will run Android.  Then we'll have to figure out what the hell to do with all these tablet computers we've bought, because they're still pretty superfluous.  No killer app yet.

I went for a Blackberry Playbook instead because the web browser is seen as a desktop and can handle most desktop sites.  I like that PayPal works on it as well as Amazon Prime HD movies and other TV and movie content sites.  My experience with Android browser is they behave more like mobile browsers.  But I have not had the chance to try a tablet with the latest Android build so maybe that has changed?  For a data connection my Android phone's Mobile AP works well.

Yes I do know that. But what I found is that some sites still detect that it is a mobile browser or just have issues. For instance I could not play Amazon Prime video on the HTC Inspire but I can on the Samsung Infuse. But the Infuse does not have to processing power to keep up with regular or HD video since it is a phone. The Playbook handles HD fine and I can put the browser in windowed mode where it keeps playing the video. Then I can open other apps in full screen while the video sound still plays or I can have all the apps in windowed mode which allows me to see and hear the video. The playbook is missing some important things like an email client in the current OS release but the browser lets me use full yahoo web mail and the multi-tasking is first rate.

You know I debated getting the Transformer rather than the A500 for about a week. In the end I decided that I'd only ever use the keyboard at home in one place. I bought the media stand for the A500 so it is propped up at a good angle to view AND I have a very small 4port USB hub that I plug into the tablet. This supports a regular keyboard, mouse and a 2TB hard drive full of movies and tv shows.

The A500 has a better screen than the Transformer and all I have to do is plug the tablet into the base and plug in one USB cable and I have basically a fully functioning netbook. I can watch a tv show on it or use it to chat while working on something on the primary computer and if I go out, I just unplug the USB and pick up the tablet and go!

Plus, it was cheaper than the Transformer when I bought it!

As for tablets ... I just don't see the value in having a dedicated data plan for all but the most unusual of circumstances. If you have an Android phone then you can tether for free generally. Most folks already have a phone with data. Just use that. If you don't, buy one. It will still work out to be cheaper in most cases than a data only plan on the tablet.

Tethering isn't my favourite way of doing things. It kills the phone's battery, for one. Having to delve in and start it is a bit troublesome also.

The best is way is to have, for a small fee, multiple SIMs tied to one line. So don't tether from your phone, tether from your line itself. :P

And its all you need. There's a new PDAnet app that allows your android phone to tether to your android tablet. My X2 and A500 combine to make the roadtriping less boring.

Which is why carriers need to start selling bundle packs. Or at least throw in tethering from your phone.

Or just keep tablets as off-contract devices and stop being such b*tches about tethering. Seriously f*ck American cellphone carriers, especially ATT and Verizon.

Oh, his argument is very meaningful.

Looking at your posting history, you have done nothing but enter contests and troll.

The real question is why is the Tab 10.1's battery life not up there with the others? Have the best from each category in battery life.

@jdog25

Samsung says 14 hours. Personal experience says around 10-11. After a full 5-7 hours of VPNing (constant connection, constant screen on, etc), it is usually around 50-60%.

Regular browsing I can definitely see it hitting 14 or so if power saving measures are on.
