Tokyo Game Show 2013 Restructuring
Tokyo Game Show 2013 Restructuring
dripdroptop.
2013 is such an exciting year for us gamers. As a whole, this year we should be more proud then ever to be an active part in what is the greatest hobby in the world.
SinHasFlesh.
NO! To some, gaming could be called a "hobby", but for most people that would just be an insult.
Slydice.
What else would you call it?
nintendo_always.
a lifestyle
stupidscreenname.
for some... yes. lol. Sad, but true.
Zorpix.
Art form
w-storm4.
A religion or cult?
carlpain.
A Hobbit!
daveness.
Sorry dude. It's a hobby. Gaming is the act of playing GAMES. You need more in your life.
SinHasFlesh.
Or maybe it is a deep and complex vehicle that is used by visionaries, artists, and story tellers to create a creative entertainment medium unlike any other form created by man. It is a way of expressing emotions and artistic vision using interactivity.
KingsGlory.
...that...was so beautiful T-T i wish my parents saw it like that.
SinHasFlesh.
Explain it to them. Make them realize that games are not just toys for children. They are the next step in creative human expression, filled with love, fear, happiness, and sadness. I think it is important for gamers to join together and speak out to the uninformed and the ignorant.
Carcinogin.
What you say is correct SinHasFlesh gaming is more than a hobby it is an outlet of creativity, story telling in a vast different way compared to other entertainment mediums, it is a pillar of innovation in the Entertainment medium, unlike say movies where their most recent innovative move was 3D Films. Gaming as industry whole is more than a hobby and Gaming to many that play games will not make a connect to it as a hobby.
SinHasFlesh.
We are what you call the "Modernists" of the videogame community. I understand the frustration David Cage has felt for years. He has tried to explain the depth and possibilities in vidoegames as a medium since the 1990s. It is refreshing to see more and more people sharing our point of view. We are truly in a renascence.
stupidscreenname.
I think games ARE art... but we have to be realistic here... gamers are not artists, nor are they even hobbyists, when they play games... they are just people playing a game. Gaming is a pastime, and nothing more. MAKING games can be an artform. To some, gaming could be a life-obsession.. but that's another issue, lol.
SinHasFlesh.
I never said gamers were artists. I said the creators of them are.
stupidscreenname.
I see that now. I thought you were referring to the community as a whole... including the gamers themselves, lol.
stupidscreenname.
not really... that outlet of creativity is only for the people MAKING the games... not the ones playing it, lol.
Carcinogin.
It isn't only reserved for people making the games, games allow you to be creative in how you interact with the art, Many video games offer you the control to create something specific for you, such as character create options, or perhaps the choices in the game you chose creates an ending that not everyone will have, the developers have been creative but they also allow creativity to come from the players themselves.
stupidscreenname.
I suppose.... but that's really stretching it. That's like doing a paint-by-numbers and calling yourself a painter/artist... 99% of gamers (made-up, but realistic statistic) just play the games and like to immerse themselves in the environment or complete challenges and/or play multiplayer online.... hardly art, or a "hobby" really... it's just a pastime that people like to put on a pedestal to justify wasting so much time with it, lol. I love games, and I've been playing since probably around 1984 or so... so I'm not knocking it. Just being honest about it.
Zangetsu468.
I almost felt a teardrop... But then I resumed gaming :)
daveness.
It's an entertainment industry. For those working in it and creating, it is a profession, a means to live and yes, a way to express their creativity. What is their business though? To make a product, to entertain customers and to make money. Gaming as a way of life? I feel sorry for anybody that doesn't have anything bigger going on in their life frankly. As for 'most people' being insulted by calling gaming just a hobby? No, that's the reality. Gaming is for enjoyment. I'd be insulted to be defined primarily as a gamer. I'm much more than that. I'm an educated, relatively young person with goals and ambitions far exceeding gaming. It will never be a lifestyle for me; it is an amusing side-show at best.
SinHasFlesh.
I simply think gaming is a great passion to many many people all around the world, and it is unfair to simply sum up a lifetime of enjoyment, of experiences and emotions as nothing but a "hobby".
RedEyeFilms.
"It will never be a lifestyle for me; it is an amusing side-show at best"... it's your opinion and you're entitled to it...but it is a close minded one. For many people, being a gamer can be a lifestyle, despite you're insecurity about that. I'm well educated and successful, currently a Casting Associate with a well respected film and television Casting Director. I have many interests and all sorts of varying creative and athletic skills. But you know what?...I am referred to by my peers and by myself as a gamer first and foremost, I am proud of who I am. Why should I be insulted by that? I have had a controller in my hand since I got my NES for xmas in the 80's. I tend to dress as game/comic characters for costume related events. I tease my girl that our wedding will be Mushroom Kingdom themed. Hell, you and I are on the IGN boards on a Sat morning as well! I'm a big kid at heart. Gaming has been and always will be a huge part of my life, a way of life some would say. But it doesn't mean I don't aspire to be great. I'd be insulted to be thought lesser of simply for that, just as you would apparently be insulted to be defined as gamer.
carlpain.
Nop, just a "hobby." (or Hobbit?).
stupidscreenname.
perhaps... but not for the gamer. that's like saying the person looking a painting is participating at the same level as the artists. nope.
SinHasFlesh.
I never said gamers were artists. I said the creators of them are...
stupidscreenname.
yep. my bad.
stupidscreenname.
I would not call gaming a hobby any more than I call watching TV a hobby. It's a way to have fun and veg out... not learn productive life skills... which is what a "hobby" really is, unless one REALLY tries hard to loosely define "hobby".
stupidscreenname.
I recommend that you focus your efforts and energies on real skills and things that can gain you profit, knowledge, skill, and insight into life.... and just play games when you have freetime or want to veg out. Trust me... gaming is not serious. That's why it's called "gaming"....
stupidscreenname.
not a hobby. more defined as a "fun pastime".
stupidscreenname.
sigh... it's just games, man. lol. Not to rain on your parade. I've been playing games since I was old enough to hold a controller, and I'm like 31 now... I have a WALL full of games and movies... I've owned nearly every system since the NES from all the companies... I'm here to tell you that gaming is no more a hobby than watching TV or reading... RC planes is a hobby. Robotics is a hobby. Boy Scouts is a hobby. Rebuilding a Jeep is a hobby. Gardening is a hobby. Snowboarding, wakeboarding, skateboarding, sports; all hobbies. Even math can be a hobby... a hobby is something that enriches skills or knowledge for productivity in life. When one tries to "define" a hobby, you could call anything a hobby... including swirling poop on a wall... so we have other words to more expressly define things more appropriately. Gaming is more defined as a pastime, like watching movies, reading, or collecting worthless things, lol. Example: When your mom tells you to "get a hobby"... I can guarantee you that she does not mean to play videogames or watch TV. She means something productive that will help you with life-skills or gateways into more valuable things like educational interests. Yeah, "hand-eye coordination"... I can think of lots of things that you could say for that, lol... still not a hobby. It's tons of fun, though, so I'm not knockin' it!! : )
SinHasFlesh.
I honestly feel sorry for you.
stupidscreenname.
lol... why is that?
RedEyeFilms.
"a hobby is something that enriches skills or knowledge for productivity in life" By your definition, gaming is a hobby simply because it's been proven to improve(enrich) motor skills, as well as ones critical thinking and more. Despite your attempt to dismiss that, It doesn't change the fact that gaming fits your own definition of a hobby typed above. Your opinion on the matter seems a bit close minded.
stupidscreenname.
Hey, are you the guy I was talking to awhile ago about modern camera technology?
RedEyeFilms.
No.
stupidscreenname.
ah... thought your screenname was related to the "red cameras" they're using now more and more. Some guy on here was part of a crew that was using them.
RedEyeFilms.
Not me. I am familiar with Red's and have operated them a few times. But I am by no means a Red expert. (forgive grammar/spelling errors if any, got home drunk lol)
stupidscreenname.
FYI... gaming does not fit that definition, unless you VERY loosely define "knowledge" and "life skills" and "productivity"... what it does do is help hand-eye coordination and critical thinking skills... like exercise for brain... and if you think of it that way, it's STILL not hobby any more than going to the gym... it would be more akin to exercise, or education, or training... lol.. Jus' sayin'.
Sam Malik.
facepalm. it still does something for you. some people just fooling around and yoyo all day and call that a hobby. a hobby can be anything and does not have to be productive as long as it is enjoyable. yeah video games to help with hand eye coordination but they also help with many other things like relieving your stress levels. if something can relieve your stress levels then it can be call the hobby.
stupidscreenname.
I agree with the definition, lol. My point was the connotation, not what Webster's says. Example: Little Timmy is annoying mom around the house... mom says to Timmy: "You need some direction, you need a hobby"... Do you think Watching TV or playing games is a "hobby" that mom is referring to? Probably not... That's all I was saying. lol.
stupidscreenname.
It's just an opinion, man... lol. I'm not close-minded at all. I don't care that much. Sometimes I get on here and I just respond to posts and jump into conversations uninvited. haha. My point was that there are many words to describe pastimes/hobbies/obsessions/etc... and being a gamer my whole life, but ALSO being many other things, having MANY real hobbies, and MUCH education, my opinion on gaming is that it's a waste of time compared to real hobbies or life-skills or education or anything else important... again, just my opinion. "Hobby" is not a term to describe gaming; that's all I was trying to say. How can we tell this most easily? When someone tries to motivate a person to do something of value in life and they suggest a hobby.... gaming is not an expected choice. I think that proves it best. The rest is self-rationalization, justification, and toying with semantics of word meaning.
RedEyeFilms.
Here is the actual definition of "Hobby" in case you want a dose of reality... hob·by /ˈhäbē/ Noun 1-an activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation and not as a main occupation. Gaming can be and IS a hobby, by definition, for millions of people. And for some, it's something more than that. Case closed.
stupidscreenname.
P.S. : ) Just chatting. No hard feelings... I never have hard feelings in a forum. It's all nonsense on here anyways, right? ha
Sam Malik.
don't worry no hard feelings for taking just trying to correct your understanding
stupidscreenname.
haha. : ) I believe that's what I was trying to do...
stupidscreenname.
nope... lol. I know what the actual definition is. That was not my point at all.... unless you want to include watching TV or clipping your toenails as a hobby, too.
Zangetsu468.
Hobby??...Gaming is a state of mind
HOLDERofFOOD.
I'm pretty sure that's exactly what everyone said last year too... EVERY YEAR IS AN EXCITING YEAR FOR GAMERS! BOOYAH!
NightmareXxX.

Bladefinger.
I wish I could go to an video game expo like this.
shawntez.abmdesigns.

stupidscreenname.

mii-gamer.
i would go for the japanese chick. Yummy mii-gamer.com
stupidscreenname.
what japanese chick? all i saw were video links to games.
Nates4Christ.
What they need to restructure is the not being mean to western video game news sites like ign that ask them about their games. I always hear how a producer does not want to talk to western media because they don't plan to release in the west. I don't know if they get it but a ton of people, myself included sometimes, love to use the region free options of their console and import the game. One of my favorite games for the ps3 is a Gundam game and it never came to my country. I'm still looking forward to importing EX Troopers and others that I know will never have a western release too.
DagnastyEp.
I wonder if Microsoft will show up this year, and what kind of attempt they're make at entering the Japanese market with their as-of-yet unannoucned new console.
stealth_omega.
it was better than e3 last year
81jono81.
Cool. Cool cool cool. For people going to TGS, that is.
stupidscreenname.
abed. word.
jpmjr.
Damn, over 4 minutes of my life wasted forever. Thanks IGN.
jksanrio.
Seeing how you took your time to comment too, your time probably isn't worth that much anyway
jpmjr.
nope,i figured since I wasted that much watching a box game what harm was another 10 sec commenting and now with this one another 10 seconds wasted, thank you.
shawntez.abmdesigns.
how long did it take for your mom to push you out?
jpmjr.
No time at all so i'm told. The story has something about a manger, a bright star in the northern sky and 3 wise men. Forgive me I can't remember it all, I was very young when it all happened.
stupidscreenname.
you're probably more like this baby: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8n6AMrF7T_M
jpmjr.
Funny film clip. I never seen that one. But, why are you showing your home movies. Not everyone is interested in you. Well, maybe your parents...... maybe.
stupidscreenname.
touche.... lol. nice. haha. That movie is called "dead alive"... it's one of those cult classic horror movies like Re-animator, Evil Dead. Dead Alive was actually one of Peter Jackson's first films! Check it out, man. : )
jpmjr.
I will,thanks for the post.
stupidscreenname.
I'm still not out yet...
stupidscreenname.

murph2010fighter.

waluigibros.
They probably are referring to the 4 minute video.
jpmjr.
Yes, I watched the video for that. now another 5 seconds for this one. Damn you box video!!!!
sonyDreamstation4.

murph2010fighter.

KuchikiSentou.
No, it wasn;t.
Plat3iumsSly.
Mmmmm... is there gonna reveal the console of PS4?
BubbaDeath00.
I've been to the TGS 3 times, and let me tell you what the problem is. ¥1000 tickets. (about $10) I hate to say this but they REALLY need to increase the price a little.
Zangetsu468.
2013 will beat 2012. I felt 2012 wasn't the best year for games looking from a broader perespective.
Sam Malik.
hahaha the Japanese come up with the strangest things for a puzzle game. I mean look at pushmo splash n crash and Tokyo crash mobs. Tokyo crash mobs is the craziest because it is Zuma with people instead of balls can you fling em at other color coded people and ninjas and even summon UFOs. it may be a kind of game them makes you go...WTF!
Josh5890.
Final Fantasy XIII: Versus anyone?
primalxconvoy.
While we're at it, replace the sexism that are the booth babe's and replace them with knowledgeable staff who can also control the antisocial Japanese/non Japanese otaku by making them move on from the demo units are 5 minutes. seriously, the main reason I don't go anymore (and I live really close to the venue) is because some otaku just hog the demo units until they complete them. That and the boredom. I hope the event, and other events understand what makes a show popular is the whole experience. Music, video, easily accessible merchandise shops (without ridiculously long waiting times) and people management (Japanese and perhaps their Chinese born otaku brethren can be infamous for pushing and shoving).
GrayFox51.
I was at the show last year and it wasn't THAT congested, the venue was huge! And they made Cosplayers go to their own section. I thought it was fine
Asdf8908.
AAaaaa
yinshi85.
Man, I wish I get to go to TGS at least once in my lifetime. Just to suffer all that fanboy sweatyness
Whiskey002.
Went to the TGS in 2006 and was not happy with the crowd and lack of control. It was Insane!. I think I might go again this year just to say I was there. Won't be Japan forever.
xSINCARAx.
this year will be so sweet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbmobwsgaFs&feature=youtu.be -xSinCarax
Fringe_Or_StarkTrek.
