Tebowing at Riverhead High School

Tebowing at Riverhead High School

High school students suspended for Tebowing - latimes.com

@Brad Vander Waal
Tebow is such a bad influence!
@Mark Larsen
He sure is... kids should emulate somebody like Tupac I guess so they don't get in trouble, huh?
@Roland Douglas Bechtel
Android autocorrects TEBOW to Renown. Who new? I guess he is someone to talk about.
@Johnathan Woods
Sounds like a blatant power trip. If more kids had fun at school maybe graduation and attendance rates would be better
@Joe Grudzinski
Yeah, cause school is all about fun and games...
@Dylan Hand
Joe Grudzinski - High school is. For the most part, it's completely irrelevant to what the rest of your life entails.
@Paul Hupp
Joe Grudzinski it should be about fun and games, because that is when kids actually LEARN, and want to learn more when it is made fun, with games. When they shut down and dont learn a thing is when school is dullsville
@lucky penny from 1980
'Said the manager of a McDonald's to the Physicist"
@Cale Byers
Joe Grudzinski School is so boring
@lucky penny from 1980
Your reading comprehension skills are obviously lacking, Paul. I was merely making the observation that the person who said high school is 'irrelevant to what the rest of your life entails" works at McDonald's, and it was directed at a physicist. Irony at its finest.
@Paul Hupp
lucky penny from 1980 My apologies penny, I thought you were claiming that if you make school fun & exciting you would be working @ McD's....BTW, there is nothing wrong with ANY job if you're happy and make a difference..........
@Jonathan Nunez
lol another reason y tebow is bad
@Heather Kuchar
Why is eveyone hating on the Christian? Lol However, I think Tebowing is the new "planking craze" so if you look at it that way.... If a group of people were planking in a hallway blocking it from other students, THAT would be a problem. I say if they were warned, they knew it wasn't approved.
@David Brown
How hard is it to understand its not about Tim Tebow, its about these kids blocking the halls.. talk about a reporter getting it wrong! The last line of this article is awful.
@Abigail Black
The kids shouldn't have been suspended, it is a blatant abuse of power and if they were in the way...why didn't the teachers just ask them to stand up?? Great quote I found online."At the end of the day, which NFL star would you want your little boy looking up to? A dog killer? A guy who beats up his girlfriend? Someone who is communicable? Or a man who loves Jesus, helps orphans and builds hospitals for the needy?" I for one want my future son to look up to someone like the Tebow's in the world, instead of the Michael Vicks, Sam Hurds, Barry Bonds, or the Tiger Woods...
@Erik Brown
Jesus freak is as bad as dog killer.
@David Rough
Jesus freak is as bad as dog killer? I really hope your kidding
@Abigail Black
Erik Brown You can keep your Michael Vicks, Barry Bonds, and Sam Hurds...and raise your kids to have a negative attitude like yours... but I will take the Tim Tebow's into my huddle any day. :)
@Paul Williams
Erik Brown As a "jesus freak", I pray that your beautiful children are far more influenced by the likes of Tim Tebows.
@Cale Byers
Erik Brown How?
@Tam Pham
Shall we pray?
@Ernest Spoon
“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." ~ Matthew 6:5-6
@Cornelius 'Sebastian' Franklin Jr.
I want to tell, if you did know, that verse is NOT saying do not pray in public under any circumstances: what it IS saying is this: do not pray in public JUST TO BE SEEN PRAYING. There is a tremendous difference. But many people who aren't believers and don't take the bible as the word of God often read a verse and interpret it incorrectly. There is a whole context of doing things to be seen that Jesus was addressing in that speech and SINCERE public prayer was not it.
@Christopher Utley
You indeed know your Word, Mr. Franklin! The original poster (obviously) does not...
@Ernest Spoon
Christopher Utley You, sir, are utterly wrong.
@Ernest Spoon
Cornelius 'Sebastian' Franklin Jr. And how is one to tell if one is sincere or not? The deity might discern sincerity or hypocrisy but the poor human can not. The open displays of piety we witness on the playground by professional athletes is more in the form of open self-aggrandizement than humility. Moreover I can well imagine the controversy if a Muslim athlete might have Qur'anic verses painted, in white, on his EyeBlacks or preform salah after ever successful touchdown? As for the young men in question in the above video, their actions were very much in the nature of drawing attention to themselves rather than sincere devotion.
@Stephen McLeod
Ban all religions (read "superstitions") and this won't be a problem anymore.
@Fritters H.
Yeah, we don't need that pesky constitution allowing freedom of religion. It's FULL of outdated concepts. Why don't we just scrap the whole thing!
@Mark Larsen
Move to Soviet Russia Stephen, it'll be Eden for you (that's paradise in biblical terms in case you weren't aware).
@Doug Meyers
Stephen, I thought that I had read some of the dumbest comments ever written from the posts above...but you have stepped up and shown us all that there are even dumber people that can post even dumber comments...You are the man!
@Chickie Hammond
Why do school administrations think that suspensions are the way to punish? Here's a quick tip...KIDS LIKE NOT GOING TO SCHOOL! I think the whole student body should Tebow. Suspend them all and then the teachers can have a day off too!!
@Chris Spence
We had in school suspensions and Saturday school when I was a lad.
@Lupe Garcia
If these are Christian kids, they need to study the bible more. What's that line about false idols? I guess instead of a golden calf we have a golden bronco. What does such a violent sport have to do with being religious anyway?
@Laki Bayag
Tebow is the Ressurector of the Dead: 1-4 Broncos to current division leader. Smile often and laugh more.
@Pamela Dowell
Laki Bayag I like your style!!!
@Anthony Miskulin
Just one more reason to pull your kids out of public school
@Andrew Gubler
Because our entire education system is WACK
@Andrew Gubler
@[100000461283569:2048:Anthony Miskulin] I don't give a f*** if God himself runs it, the system is TERRIBLE. Not because of teacher salaries and administration (your union gripe), but because the entire structure of the system- i.e. not concentrating on specialized skills, interests, aptitudes, or career oriented curriculum until college, or late high school at best. College itself is an even bigger joke as you come out debt ridden and unable to land a high paying job, because you've been lied to by "them" your whole life about the benefits of higher education and it's framing as a prerequisite for success. Most of the most successful people I know never went to college. My point is, everything, top to bottom, needs a total overhaul. Union or not.
@Laki Bayag
Not easy to do for most folks, especially those who struggle on a day to day basis just to put food on the table.
@Patrick O'Neill
Is this a newspaper article or someone's facebook page? "So remember, in Long Island, Tim Tebow is a bad influence on your kids, probably along with Santa Claus and the tooth fairy." That's journalism? No wonder this newspaper is a laughingstock.
@Ted Duvall
Came here to write that.
@Patrick O'Neill
Is Houston Mitchell fifteen years old? This article reads as if it was written by one of the suspended kids. Hilarious.
@Adam Langer
I hereby submit my formal objection to your demeaning of high school journalism. As a high school newspaper editor, I never, well, almost never, published anything this lame.
@Patrick O'Neill
I did not mean to offend any fifteen-year-old journalists by comparing them to the author of this "piece."
@Houston Mitchell
I hope to be 15 one day. Thanks for reading!
@Patrick O'Neill
There's one sure way to know that I struck a nerve: I get a response from the author.
@Mike Miller
if the wrong kid gets pushed a brawl could ensue - translate: minority kid.
@Billy Bob
Religious discrimination hiding behind "safety' issue.
@Tony Moreno
the obvious bias on the reporters part almost made me stop from reading this. its not that tebow is a bad influence, its that the kids are being disruptive and creating a potential hazard for other students. although some of us might remember our HS hallways as great expansive corridors, a trip back will show you that (like most stuff from our youth) they are smaller than we remember. small enough to touch both sids with our arms streched out even. now stuff a bunch of teens trying to get to class in them? the hall ways are already a frenzied place. no need to add to that. the kids were warned. they didnt follow instructions. consequences followed. simple enough.
@Travis Mogren
Teabagging is more fun then teabowing..
@Marci Simon
First of all, it's "on" Long Island, not "in" Long Island. Second, suspension is a little harsh. So they get a day off from school, oh no. You want to punish them for having a little fun and maybe causing a disturbance, make them do some volunteer cleanup around campus, tutoring, etc.
@Thomas J Bartel
The epitome of stupid...looks like veiled discrimination to me.
@Ted Duvall
or obnoxious kids doing something they were told not to do.
@Brian Fegan
I'm surprised we haven't seen Tebow's image miraculously appear on a burnt piece of toast yet.
@Brian Olafson
Misguided "adults" strike again.
@Andrey Bogdanov
Bull.........shit!
@Peggy Keller
Watch the video, they didn't get suspended because of taking a prayer stance. They got suspended because everyone started pushing and people were being knocked over while other kids were walking on them. If someone in actually got hurt here, the whole country would be screaming about the school not stopping at it. And anyone who thinks those kids were praying, turn the sound up so you can hear the giggling.
@Susan Schoenberg-Miller
Keep all religion out of public schools! It's clearly cult-like activity. So, if Muslim students want to throw down a rug and start praying to Mecca, the Christians will be okay with this? I think not.
@Janine Candelario
Give me a break... First of all, they weren't doing anything "religious". By the way, in case you didn't know...there is no such thing as "separation of church and state" in the Constitution. The Constitution protects freedom OF religion--not freedom from religion. And while I am not religious, I support the Constitution and everyone's right to worship as they wish whereever and whenever they want. Freedom and individuality is what made this country great--NOT some leftist control-freak ideas that want to take away our freedom and force us to live as they (you?) see fit.
@Marty Trued
God Bless. America's kids are finally standing up to America's Mean and Nasty Liberals.
@Paul Williams
There is a time and place for everything. This was neither the time, nor the place. If my kids had done this, I would have told them they deserved the punishment. And, I am a Christian. This wasn't about religious expression, this was about high school kids being high school kids. Nothing more, nothing less.
@Dustin Hammond
If this would have been kids lying down blocking the hallways or a group a friends refusing to disperse to clear the hallway this would be a non issue. Never mind the fact they were warned not to do it again. You wanna tebow it... then do it outside before school starts
@Noah Hull
Maybe they should have done the Hurd.
@Tito Flanders
Much ado about nothing. If you watch the video you see that they are indeed blocking the hallway. I doubt it had anything to do with religion.
@Hal Summers
Unfortunately, this is a typical administrator overreaction. Instead of just pulling these kids aside and explaining that their actions were blocking walkways, they have to suspend them, create a media sensation and now the next week will be wasted dealing with the fallout. What will the kids learn from this? They'll learn if they have an IQ less than 75, they may have a future in school administration.
@Sandy Combs
America the "Police State" stikes again.
@Mike Dickey
School administrators must be JETS fans lol
@Laki Bayag
Hilarious! Not ground for suspension though. A total power trip from the principal's office.
@Paul Barone
Anyone already using "Tebow" as a verb should also be suspended.
@Max Plummer
When are we gonna get tired of this liberal crap.Soon their going to awake a sleeping giant they can not control.
@Chris Carey
"I'm bigger than Jesus." -Timmy Tebow nah, imagine he said that, though.
@Louis Bricano
Tempest in a teapot. It comes down to a "they said - we said" contest. In my wisdom, I'll sum it all up for everyone, and then there will be no need for further comment. If the school did tell the students not to strike the pose, and the kids did it anyway, then the suspensions are justified. If the students weren't told not to do it, as they (students) are claiming, then the suspensions are unjustified. If the students are going to contest their suspensions, I imagine some kind of investigation will ensue. This will all take place in New York, and is of no interest to the typical reader of the Los Angeles Times-and-Throwaway. There, it's all done now. You may all go back to wasting time on something else, now that I've closed this topic to further time-wasting.
@Louis Bricano
To rework that old chestnut, it's all fun and games until some kid burns up in the school fire because the hallway was blocked by some knuckleheads imitating a stupid pose by a pro athlete. I realize that's not quite as catchy as the original, but you get the idea.
@Bill Crawford
Who wrote this article? Report the who, why,when, and where! Do not tilt it towards YOUR opinion! I had to look again to see if this was the opinion section. As for the 'Tebowing'? I would trust there was no personal decision made when it came to suspension. That it was for dis obeying and safety issues. A non-story if you ask me....and, perhaps, the start of a new national trend!
@Patricia Torres
what is tebowing?
@Kathryn Balmforth
As I understand it, the kids were not suspended for praying, but for blocking the hallways after being asked repeatedly not to block the hallway. If they had knelt at the side of the street corner/hallway, and let others pass, they could have made their point without being suspended.
@Patrick Richardson
Just another school administrator lording it over the students to feed his ego and the superintendent verifying that right or wrong the school administration will be defended at all costs.
@Thepath Lesstraveled
shame on the editor for their biased coverage of this article!
@Lucas Pistone
Whoever wrote this blog is a moron. Students who "don't get good grades or eat all their vegetables" won't get suspended. Students who block hallways should, moron! I got suspended all the time in high school. Big freaking deal. Oh no it's going on their permanent record. Boo Hoo! Get a life!
