LG Nitro HD Review: You Win Some, You Lose Some | TechCrunch
@Max Woolf
"The Nitro HD is like a box of chocolates, you donât know what youâre going to get. " Well, that's why we're reading this review, duh. :P
@Hariharan Balakrishnan
Good one :D
@Gabriel Bowen
I like everything in this design except for the back. I wish it was more smooth. I'm not a fan of the diagonal lines. But other than that, it looks great. http://gbstechnews.com/
@Rodney Sparks
Funny, that's one of the most appealing things to me! That said, I prefer the lighter texture of the Galaxy S II 4.3" (not the Skyrocket).
@Rodney Sparks
I went and saw it today. It doesn't actually have diagonal lines... it just looks like it. It has rows of vertical and horizontal ridges that form the illusion of diagonal lines. The texture actually isn't very tall at all. Looks better in person.
@Akira Kanezaki
I know what the problem is. It's probably the same issue as on my HTC Sensation. Not enough RAM. 768MB on a 720p device? That's the core of the lag issue, I bet. I also agree that the cover for the charging port is terrible. And video footage I have seen of device, it looks like the buttons go out way too quickly. I had high hopes. Looks like I'm going Verizon after all.
@David Nguyen
So that's why I didn't think it was a big improvement over Gingerbread! I naturally assumed it had Ice Cream preinstalled because it's one of the first androids that uses the 3 front sensor design (application switcher, home, back).
@Rodney Sparks
I'm seriously considering giving my iPhone 4S to my wife and picking up an Android phone with her upgrade. The Skyrocket was my first pick, until I saw this bad boy. I'm willing to put up with a few defects in order to keep that awesome screen resolution. I have good close-up vision, so the high resolution of the iPhone 4S is a huge plus for me, as I don't have to zoom when viewing web pages. Looks like this will be the case for the Nitro as well. A few comments: 1) I read in a few places that this phone has 1GB of RAM, not 768 MB as Akira has stated. 2) This is the first review I've read that had anything negative to say about the "snappiness" of the OS. I wonder what the deal is with that. I'm hoping this phone turns out to be a winner! I don't want to give up any pixels when I give up my iPhone. ;-)
@Andrew Slatin
Just picked one up today, and have no problem with lag. If anything, it's negligible. You should buy this phone single handedly on the screen. It's gorgeous. My only concern is the battery life needed to power this monster of a screen. Hopefully this review is right about the battery.
@Rodney Sparks
Is the camera app comparable to that of the Samsung Galaxy S II? Being an iPhone user, I don't know which of these apps are standard Android and which are part of carrier/OEM overlays. Here's the GSII camera app: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo8VelPZxkg What's your impression of the creakiness/flexibility of the chassis? I can live with the USB port on the top... I'm not much of a gamer, so much of what I do is in portrait orientation. Also, one thing I don't like to give up in my iPhone 4S is the HDR mode in the camera app. Is there anything comparable in the stock LG camera app, or is this a third-party-only function? Thanks!
@Rodney Sparks
Also, Andrew Slatin , what's *your* impression of the speaker? I'm planning on waiting for all of the benchmarks to come out before I take the plunge, but it doesn't sound like there'll be an issue. I'll likely pick one up on Friday of this week.
@Andrew Slatin
Speaker is pretty good. It is on the back of the phone so if you cup your hand around the end you get pretty good sound volumes. 8/10
@Rodney Sparks
Andrew Slatin : I do the same thing with the speaker on my iPhone all the time. ;-)
@Andrew Slatin
I have not problems with the chassis creaking. The phone is mind blowing lightweight. I also came from an iPhone 4 and the nitro is definitely lighter (but still sturdy). The camera is really good. I looked at the gs2 and the overlays are similar. There are about 30 picture options available which are nice. (flash, ISO, White balance, scene mode, timer, and a panarama mode!) idk about HDR though. I actually prefer the USB port on the top, so you can rest the phone on your leg/stomach while charging, and the cord not having to break off. Overall... GREAT first impressions.
@Rodney Sparks
Andrew Slatin Does the plastic back have that "rubber plated" feel, or is it just hard plastic?
@Andrew Slatin
The sides(which are very small) have more of a softer plastic. The back is a lot more stiff. Not so much grippy as it is tough and shock absorbing. Feels good and safe in the hand. I would call it hard plastic. Seems very durable.
@Rodney Sparks
Andrew Slatin Good point re: the position of the USB port. Unless you're gaming, the top edge of the phone is the least used.
@Andrew Slatin
I could game just fine with my iPhone (but not rest it on my stomach) I recommend you go to an AT&T store, and experience the screen in person.
@Phanos Sofroniou
AT&T always gets the lame phones this phone is so ugly and not worth and I hate LG android skin! Its atrocious! Please At&t get the galaxy nexus! I am tired of tired of waiting, For a great Android device! This phone doesn't have enough ram or storage too. So many downsides..
@Clever Duenas
I was playing with this phone today and it rung up at 140+taxes it was about 200 $ not 250 $ this phone is beast the HD video playback was amazing.
@Jan S. Mahler
One thing that threw me off about this phone is the fact that there are only 3 soft buttons: home, back and menu/search. I'm used to pressing the search button as needed, but this takes a little rethinking and relearning as you now have to hold the menu button down longer in order to bring up a search. Anyhow, it's too bad you don't have any benchmark scores as not all versions of Android are the same nor are all ARM based processors and it would have been interesting to see if LG has made any improvements or optimizations. After playing with the device for a while today, I have a different experience than you as I didn't witness the omnipresent lag that you did. It didn't feel as snappy as the SGS2 does, but it certainly didn't seem to have lag all over the place from what I witnessed.
@Haruhi Suzumya
ohhhhhhh greeeeeeeeeeat
