Android UI design patterns

Sean Slater · Top Commenter
“I’ve used all these different devices, they suck.”... and yet he hasn't used a Nexus S. I'll tell you what sucks though, musicians who suddenly think because they have a army of drones on Twitter that their opinion means more than anyone else.

His Twitter following has nothing to do with his statements. OBVIOUSLY, he has not tried every single fucking Android smartphone out there. But I can bet you he has seen most of them (since there is practically a review for every smartphone in existence in thousands of blogs, not a hard task). You being prejudicial because he's a rapper? First of all, music is entertainment, nothing else. Second of all, he has expressed that he is capable of entrepreneurship, especially in technology. I for one approve of artists, boxers (De La Hoya), musicians, sport players, etc. using their fortune to support the industry we all love. In the end he has the money to make things possible, do you have money? Welcome to Capital America, where anything is possible.

this comment is meaningless, honestly. first off, he is entitled to an opinion just as much as you are. no one's saying you shouldn't comment. second, just because he didn't use a nexus S doesn't mean he didn't use a lot of android devices. how many phones would you continue to buy until you say "forget it, i'll stick with this until something better comes out"??? he doesn't think his opinion means more because he has followers - for you to think that, to me, is simply an idiotic idea. we all have opinions. he's famous and know to be a frequent of TC so, he'll be easily noticed and his opinion can carry further than you're complaining...

Android is software, not hardware. Plead with the device makers to make a better device.

When you get a device you get the hardware and the software. So you need to plead to the device makers and Google.

Garth Shoemaker · Top Commenter · Sunnyvale, California
Arif, users don't care if you are unable to enforce quality standards due to fragmented hardware and software groups. Instead of making excuses, perhaps this is an indication that Apple is right, and that the entire device (software + hardware) should to be designed as a single whole.

Yes, if by "undereducated" you mean 'went to university for 2 years before making it big in the music scene'. And, if you think not finishing university to pursue something big is "undereducated" then so are Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, etc...

Android devices: For people with brains. As the proud owner and user of a Nexus one, and owner/user of an iphone 3g as an ipod touch, it's very easy to see. If your complaint is that "it sucks," as opposed to disliking certain UI elements, or not finding the app you want within the android market, or even an opinion on the speed at which the device responds to your every command, there might be something wrong with the user and their opinion and not the devices said user claims "sucks." Just a thought.

there is less apps for the Android and its does not run as smooth and the casing is lesser than its counter partner must I stress , sir

I personally don't find the apps lacking (Though I'll admit I'm not an app junkie), my Nexus runs faster than any iphone I've played with, my Nexus One's metal case is as sexy as the day it came in, and it's over a year and a half old.

If you don't like it personally for the reasons you semi-clearly stated, I say different strokes for different folks and more power to you. But if you say "duh, durr, it sucks because I have an iphone, huh huh," then expect to be ridiculed for being an idiot, and rightly so.

Well, no ones saying that Carlos at all ! This is no bulling match or something between children. Your a human so you got my respect. What I'm saying is this the Nexus is for special interest people personally and most devices are moving to Iphone and more compatible with the electronic devices we are moving towards "today". Who cares what some one chooses personally. We are talking about overall it doesn't match ... less convenient for a world difference not on a local personal level. I'm very happy to see someone with the cajones to finally say it out loud. Android has huge potential, but it's a fragmented mess and the devices are not Apple-quality. WP7 is very slick and is coming. WP7's gain will be Android's loss. In two years, Android will be the Linux of the mobile world and iOS and WP7/8/... will rule at the top. iOS may be a little too closed for the techies, but Android is still waaaay too 'DIY' for the mass market.

Everyone talking about what the guy knows about the industry. They are making the phones for people who are the consumer and if the consumer is saying that the there is a need to make the device better, I would not be pissed at that, I would take him aside as the lead designer to figure out what he would like to see on the device...I mean, customer feedback and criticism is what makes product even greater...know what people want and give it to them. Most of you here talking about android are just like the Linux few - like Microsoft and Apple, they develop products not only for techies, but for the mass...and android is right now being used mostly by techies

First, Meta Physics is not a good example. May be you meant something like Nuclear Physics. And yes, may be for highly complex academic topics, I would be skeptical if Chamillionaire stated he is familiar with a topic after just a couple of years of being involved.

However, usability of mobile phones is not one of such topics.

Wow. I can't believe the judgments being made about someone based on one sentences and their name. Anyone who has followed Chamillionaire in the last few years knows that he is an adamant knowledge seeker with great insights who is far from the rapper stereotype that you all have in your minds. The guy doesn't even smoke or drink for Christ's sake. By the way Chamillionaire is broken into two parts. "Chameleon" meaning he blends into tracks well and can change his style. As for the millionaire it refers to how he claims to be "rich in style". As for the phones. Who care's. He was simply stating that the android devices he's came across haven't been any good in his eyes. Do some research before ya'll speak. And my name's not really Billy Bob FYI. Peace.

I always find that these people who hate android are annoyed that everything doesn't work the exact way they are use to. It's the reason PC users hate Mac's.
3 · · July 29 at 4:49pm

Calum Richardson · Top Commenter · 206 subscribers
It isn't the reason all PC users hate Macs, of course. I prefer Windows because of how it manages windows over how Mac OS X does; I also believe Microsoft have implemented many of their features in a better way than Apple did. Furthermore, I much prefer Windows Phone over iOS and Android because of the beautiful design and live tiles, and both Windows 8 and Xbox Dashboard are adopting similar design styles. I love consistency in terms of design across devices. Moreover, Windows, Windows Phone, Windows Live, Bing, and Xbox are becoming much more integrated, and integration between devices and services is becoming more important to many of us.

Those are some of my reasons for much preferring Windows PCs to Macs. I know exactly how everything works on a Mac, but Microsoft have merely been making better products than Apple.

for gods sakes!, apple was going (tempted) into bankruptcy in 1997 and in 2007 a fuckin phone save there asses just because the only thing good in apple is steve jobs. the mac didn't cut it and microsoft still makes more revenue for investors even dough apple has more net income. linux is for a person that thinks, unix is almost dead...apple are one of the few carrying on there backs. apple make products so easy to use and then they have the nerve to tell people is advanced. everything made in linux can be done to the extreme it depends on the developer...but, since apple has taken the fun out of challenges most developers are getting lazy using only objective C. android is about choice and costomization...see where I'm getting at, no restrictions. I have the htc evo (first gen) and people with iphones drool just to see how much can be done with an android phone. people care about apps but 90% of them cant carry more than 100 on there phones because they get tired. apple fan boys that didn't know how to use a pc and wimp out to apple...scared of a little troubleshooting?, study! I like the ipad because that thing has some use but for a phone I'm android, and the only reason I have an ipad is because there's no android tablet that I can feel good with it.

Duarte has made some great things in the past. I loved the Sidekick OS, loved the Helio OS and love Web OS even though I never owned a Palm Pre. I agree all smart phones suck, there user interface is appalling it doesn't conform to the human condition at all - Apple, Microsoft and Google are just trying to cram the "desktop user interface" into the smart phone - the world doesn't work that way.

I am working on user interfaces that are of a different kind, a kind where data can be viewed, searched and manipulated in new ways with smartphone devices.

Abstraction will always exist in the computer world. So its up to us to create these new interfaces that harness abstraction according to the changing physical hardware and software standards.

That's true Arif, case in point I downloaded Mobi ebook via usb to both Xoom and Motorola/Vorizon Droid phone. The Xoom was so slow compared to phone, both used same Android OS. But the OS does vary between devices too. Still cant access Mobi Ebook I put in download folder of Xoom, because the OS doesn't let me access Kindle folder, on the phone OS did. Plus Xoom wont do video skype either. So Google does need to be more PC like (where all software/apps work with it), instead of MAC like (where on certain software/apps work with it).

TechCrunch honestly thinks a guy who goes by the name Chamillionaire represents the masses enough to elevate his comments to front page, dedicated article status? Talk about pathetic.

Either he's too simple to understand that Google doesn't make "all those devices" that he dislikes, or he doesn't understand tech enough to distinguish between an OS and a device.

Either way, TC has sunk to a new low in sensationalized, comment baiting AOL-style blogging.

Not going to shoot the messenger on this one, because after using 3 different Android phones, I still can't get that zen feeling like I get with the iPhone. And it's the combination of hardware and software. I wouldn't go as far as saying it sucks, but I do feel like I hold onto false hopes that an open platform, with the latest and greatest hardware features, would somehow be better than the closed environment iPhone device which is still stuck with a megapixel camera from yesteryear. Xbox sucks I mean how many times do I need to hear people saying they have to replace their xbox for one reason or another while I still have the same ps3 for 5 yrs. All you people hating on Cham lets see if your name is certified with RIIA. lets see your record platinumed and to be the only rapper to sell the most ringtones for one song. Until then dnt say shit all you Microsoft geeks that have no argument. By the way it was just 2 days ago that apple had more money than the US treasury so until android can do that your devices suck. Good Day

I don't even understand the point of this article other than to drive traffic (which TechCrunch loves to criticize other sites for). Someone kinda famous went to a TechCrunch thing and didn't like Android.

I switched from iPhone 3Gs to Samsung Captivate and couldn't be happier. Please contact me to write an article.

His comments are valid from his perspective and point of view and he does represent a lot of regular consumers, people who don't comment, join xda, or read manuals, they just want a phone that works. Don't blame Steve for paying attention and having more cash than the US Government. Just because Android has a boatload of activation's doesn't mean people are happy with their devices and yes there is a diff between the device, OS, and bloatware that OEM's install. When WinMo was the only thing, people were buying it but few were happy until the iPhone and Android came along.

Apple has better UI and most people who have an Android don't even use the phone's more advanced features, whatever they are. The average consumer has never used a Nexus S, maybe now that its on Sprint that will change but its not the defacto Android phone. It will be a very long time until Android has the daily integration that Apple has with auto, audio, and third party manufacturers.

At the end of the day Android provides plenty of options for people but its UI is ass compared to iOS (if you like ease of use and simplicity), if you feel better than others becasue your phone is rooted and you have to have a PHD to operate it then go ahead. Nexus S is the best phone Android has eff 4G/3D and all that UI wins it all the time.

Android UI sucks ass? Tell me why, because even some manufacturer interfaces like HTC Sense and the new Motorola Blur have practical, coherent designs. Is it because of the different file structure? The multiple options? The relative sandbox-style openness of the system?

It's a grave mistake that Android is a lot harder to operate that the iPhone; sure it takes a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, it's smooth sailing from here on end. I was on iOS when I tried 2.2 Froyo back then, and it was actually easy to understand. Most operations center on the long-press and the options menu; in terms of general navigation and usage however, it's just as easy as iOS.

Android UI sucks ass bcuz its maker Google wouldn't know good UIX if it gave them 6000 mobile patents for free. As for HTC, and Moto Wreck, dont get me started. Blur was okay on the Cliq but its way to heavy and a faster phone doesnt make a heavy UIX better it means your UI and coding is weak, ie BLOWS. HTC Sense its not bad but if you had to rank it I doubt most people would want that over iOS, or even Vanilla Gingerbread. The average consumer doesnt want to learn a file structure, they dont want to know its unix, they dont want multiple options on the OS because they dont understand, most of them at least dont have a clue what those options will do. ...Devamını Gör

A lot of people look for a couple of gimmicks in a product.

For example Google+ has the Circles UI gimmick. Just because of that people call it to be better than Facebook, when in fact Google+ has slow feed updates whereas Facebook is almost realtime, the notifications don't sync well across different application whereas FB is again almost realtime.

The point is that ICS will need just a couple of gimmicks that would make people believe it is better than iOS.

Apple uses animations as gimmick.
