Note to mayor of San Francisco:
"the business strategy, if you will of New York City Government is not to subsidize companies, not to pay for people to bring jobs here, it is to invest in parks and cultural institutions and better public schools and lower crime to get the best and brightest to want to live here.”.

SF is anti-business, unless you're Twitter. No wonder Silicon Valley is not San Francisco.

"‘Hi, I am Mike Bloomberg. I brought you a cup of coffee. Can I talk to you?’” His persistence paid off."
That's not persistence. That's guilt-tripping. :P

Try pulling that off with the level of security all of the financial buildings have today. ;-) It's like going through airport security before merely making it to the terminal, only to have to find your way to the right "gate."

Very similar to the speech he gave at the NYTech meet up. It's so great to see the city of New York so involved with the startup world. Things are going to be great around here guys... it started already!

I suppose having the $5 million severance package he was paid by Salomon didn't hurt either. ;)

He's a brilliant guy. He came and spoke at the NY Tech Meetup in October. He was very inspirational. Hearing him speak, audience members could visual their little startup companies doing what he did. It's so compelling.

So he was too proud to look for a job, but being servant to people he doesn't know is ok for his ego. Tsk tsk tsk.

Yes, because he is serving his own interest, building his own "brand".

Anderson Mccutcheon You're serving your interest when you're working for company too. In fact his interest is money (which is ok). I just find it's laughable that he gives inconsistent story.

How many coffees will it take to get Bloomberg out of everyone's pocketbook, business and personal space?

This is such a good interview. Bloomberg seems to be a very down to earth guy. I think the most valuable lesson from that interview is that in order to be successful as an entrepreneur it is not a shame to do "cheap" work. I.e. create office space by rearranging the desks rather than renting office space and bring random people coffee after you snuck into the Merrill Lynch office. I also liked the fact that he instantly recognized that he cannot compete with PCs –-> very good entrepreneurial mindset.

I interviewed him in '95 for The Red Herring magazine. When he was telling me about getting fired before starting Bloomberg he talked about it being after a power-struggle with "2 other guys" and added as afterthought fact that they're "dead now" with a look I interpreted to imply something like "so I won". All of that with good comic delivery.

"The business strategy... of New York City Government is... to get the best and brightest to want to live here.”.
I think there is some truth to that. I'm from Seattle, and you can't pay me enough to live in the "middle" of the US except for Boulder, Austin or Chicago.

Bloomberg terminals (private sector) and NYC 3-1-1 (public sector) are arguably two of the biggest NYC tech successes of the last 2-3 decades; both are brainchild's of this man...commendable for someone that's not even thought about when we think tech billionaires...

Thats because that all it is.....a story! I love how he tries to make this into an "I got fired, was out in the cold, and then worked really hard to get to the top!" He fails to mention that when he left the company, he also left with a severance package totaling 10 million dollars! He makes it seem like he was down and out without any money in his pockets. Give most people that get fired a 10 million dollar severance check and I'm pretty sure they could come up with something pretty great too!

James Devonport Wood, yeah, I used to work at Bloomberg, and all new employees get his book that he wrote, called "Bloomberg on Bloomberg." Even the book title has a huge ego!
