what happens when Facebook becomes Myspace and no one uses it.. like, forever again but are still very much alive? there should be a more standardized way of checking if someone is dead. Like send an email and wait for a response for a week, if no response then you are dead. users can set it on the site if they are going on long vacations or Antarctica or something.

That is exactly how it works. Facebook and Twitter check is just a way to bother you less with emails.

Dan Danilkin an email every 3 months isnt exactly a burden. alot better than being deemed dead due to changing social networking trends.

Not sure there's enough ignorant- uneducated idiots to support this on the planet. Then again I could be wrong judging from the direction things are going.

Bad luck if you just went on a long journey. Have a look at Datainherit from Switzerland. They have years of experience with this topic http://www.datainherit.com/en/why_data_inheritance/overview_data_inheritance.html

Datainherit has a much too broad scope. They offer all kinds of services, password management, data storage and so on. It's a typical example of focus vs. feature richness whereas a focused and streamlined app wins the game.
