Sounds like the purchase was a "grand slam".

What's with the post above....seems unrelated. Maybe someone could delete it since it seems like an Ad for something else. As for the Grand Slam....Lumber Jack?

“For ten months, what ever we wanted to do, we were allowed to do.” And all they did was run a company? Pfft, there are much more *creative* ways to use Google's resources if they're sporting a blank check. ;)

Out of curiosity: like what Max?

Trying to pull something out of you that doesn't make you sound like a total hater :)

Awesome article, and very interesting... I think the deal worked out well for both Chen and Google.

Nice little insight. Goes to show that even the biggest of deals are done between people. No matter the setting.

Daniel Kay · Top Commenter
just exactly whats the other way those deal can be done?

I love Google and I think its the best thing they ever purchased. I also would think these two founders would have worth as much as Mark Zuckerberg, if not more, had they held out though or just keep the company to themselves. Youtube has been around for so long and its still growing.

Ray Gellenbeck · Client Solutions Architect - ITSM Saas at Unisys
meh, some including myself would argue that YouTube grew well on its own, but Google's incorporating them took them to a whole new level. No doubt YouTube was big, but I don't see it ever having achieved Facebook autonomy on its own and, worse, it might have been toppled by the next swanky video hosting craze to come along. Sometimes acquisition makes sense (not always, but sometimes).

Was it a big sale? No regrets in the end?

ok couple facts so most of you wanna-be one billion $ exit entrepreneurs leave cloud number nine and step; into the real world.
1. what Chen already had and none of you does, is amazing back of people that were willing to do deals with him. He knew cell numbers of people your read about here every day. you don't. 2. this deal was owed to YT owners. most of the Goog board looked at it the right way -- that its a pirate site where noone cares about copyrights. Most of the board was against the purchase. Highest people in Goog pull it anyways. 3. Of course it was a great sell, to yt owners of course. If you think that Goog wasnt able to figure out how to make money with YT in last 4 years, will all of sudden come up with some brilliant plan to make it 10% of goog revenue, then you are wrong.

Jacketad Linkjacket
looking back to it, would you still sell? I am curious about the thought of the founders about youtube then and now.

On the bright side when you look at it, this is a great opening for the 'Google TV' concept. It may be strategic back then, but it's the way forward now.

A slam indeed, but with Google you need to determine how majors does it constitute.
