Kindle Fire pre-orders heat up, reportedly reach 95,000

M G 5 minutes ago
"Amazon still has a long way to go before it catches up with Apple"--isn't that a little premature, not to mention grossly flawed logic?  As a point of accuracy, you're comparing Amazon's 95,000 of *first-day pre-orders only* on the one hand, and *all of Apple's preorders* plus *all first-day retail sales* on the other.  I'm going by the information in Engadget's own article, linked above.

95000 people that aren't very smart, since it wasn't very secret that a better one will be out as early as January 2012. $200 to be obsolete the day the pre-orders were allowed? Pass. I'll wait and see for the spring. I'd like to see what Apple has with the iPad 3, and if this drives the price down any (it probably won't; I know how Apple works). Worst case, I've waited long enough to see Amazon's REAL intentions with the Fire.

I'm very much looking forward to this. Its a tablet e-reader more than it it a tablet. I don't know why people are complaining about space and such. Its primary function is reading, right? Magazines books and maybe a video here and there. I don't think its supposed to be an iPad or iPod that stores your entire media collection.

I can't wait.

I have the Ipad2, so am not interested in obtaining a tablet any time soon, but this tablet doesn't excite me. It's cheap and all, but first, only 8 gb is super negative, also no sd card option, also is fake android, doesn't offer google services, basically all media will have to come through amazon. Which might be positive to most, but to me that is not. This tablet appears cheap, but once you have to pony for all the content, through amazon. I rather buy a tablet with more memory, and open, a real Android, than the fire.

If you don't mind paying for them, then you can get most first run TV episodes the next day.  Same for movies, the day they are released on DVD, you can buy them from Video on Demand (or whatever they call it now) and download it.

I'm inclined to agree, except:  This is meant mainly as a consumptive device.  Windows tablets are far more expensive, run hotter, and the battery charge is shorter.  Also, until I have seen one and determined that it is superior to the horrid Windows 7 tablet experience, I'm going to hold off on Microsoft's latest.

I kind of see your point, in that the win8 tablets will be far more useful from a productivity standpoint.  But the fire is not about productivity, it's about leisure.  You read books, browse the web, watch video, check Facebook, and other fun stuff.  On the Win8 tabs, you will be able to sit down, drop it in a docking station, and have a full computer for productivity.  That will be the appeal, and that will be how they will be able to justify a price most likely starting around that of the iPad.  The win8 tabs will put pressure on the iPad from above by offering greater functionality at the same (or greater) price.  Tablets like the Fire will put the pressure on from the bottom, for those that don't need the full functionality of the iPad or win8 tabs.

Apps make the platform, and there are many, many more Windows machines out there than iPads, so developers will support the platform. With ARM processors, Windows tablets should have cheap models too. But unlike an iPad or Kindle Fire, the same platform will also be available on real computers and high-end tablets so you can have your apps everywhere. And you can just buy a tablet with a Bluetooth keyboard instead of a laptop and an iPad. An x86 Windows 8 tablet can actually replace a laptop. That should get the consumers like me who think tablets would be neat but don't want to spend hundreds on a third device that can't even do basic computer-related tasks.

yesterday I spend 2 hours with MS testing w8 in a tablet . For the new apps the o/s is looking ok. For the traditional apps you go to desktop mode which is exactly like w7. In the beginning it will be only apps store and music will come one year later. It gives you the option to share any screen shot through social media. You can log on by talking a pic of your self and the o/s identifies you. I do not think that they have something major compared to Bios, android and web os

Still, we don't know what Amazon is actually paying for the parts themselves as they will certainly be buying in BULK which yields a nice discount. Even if they still manage to lose some money they'll most likely be making it back through software and book sales.

This is not in competition with iPad. They are not in the same class. Fire is an appropriate name, because it is burning a hole (loss) in Amazon's bank account.

Apple makes about $200 profit for each iPad. Amazon is going to lose about $50 for each of this Kindle. Amazon is hoping to make money by selling contents.

You're right, these tablets aren't in the same class at all. If anything, the Fire is going to be a more popular sell than the iPad. Apple has to be a little worried because their sales of the iPad have slowed as the market that can both afford it and wants it becomes saturated.

What's more, it's starting to look like Apple is taking the same road they always take -- making people pay a premium for the logo on the back. That's fine and all when your product is a status symbol, but once that's gone, you're just left with an overpriced tablet that does basically the same things as this one.

You know what I find funny though? You can buy Amazon's entire line of new Kindles for less than you can buy a WiFi-only iPad 2. This is tablet is going to take a chunk out of Apple's market share, and with its integration with Amazon's stores, it's going to make back that meager $6 they lost.

First off it's 208 bucks to produce the Fire, so they are not losing 50 bucks a kindle.  Second, why are you bragging about Apple making $200 profit per unit?  Unless you own the stock, I wouldn't be happy about that they could charge you less, but they choose not to.  I support Amazon.

That is not true, I know which article you are talking about and those numbers are guessed withotu actually doing a real tear down. And that same article said ipad make $100 in profit lol, even though I would say its more.

I will give you an example, the ViewSonic has a dual core and has similar specs and costs 250$(though has a worse lcd but upgrading to a better one is 50$~)  in retail stores. After retail store takes their cut of like $100, that leaves 150$ for viewsonic and they still manage to turn a profit on it somehow.

At 200$ mark I estimate Amazon is making around 50$ profit considering they don't need to share revenue with retailers/distribution channels.

I would only presume that Amazon is not in this tablet thing in the short term, but they are willing to sell it at a lost to gain traction and marketshare... They can recoup their losses from their strong ecosystem... at least that's what i think. Disregarding the price, the Fire is still a compelling device as it is so I don't see why it won't be a hit.... They have basically covered all the bases for what a tablet is... that is a consumption device.

The $199 price is about the max I'd pay for this use, and I'm not interested in shady third-rate brand names with questionable hardware and software quality and unknown support.  Having the Amazon brand backing this device and what is sure to be a massive user base assures me (in my personal opinion) that I will have a quality experience, or at least be able to hack it or return it if I'm unhappy.

I like the way the tablet market is shaping up.  The Kindle fire leads the charge into mainstream acceptance of the low-end android based tablets, Apple sits as King of the middle ground with the iPad, and Microsoft is going to try to show that bigger tablets can be used productively, and will probably range higher than the iPad in price, but also offer greater functionality.  The iPad will be in trouble if Microsoft can actually get some manufacturers to produce tablets of at least decent quality that come close to matching the iPad's portability.  If Microsoft can convince people that a Windows tablet works, then Apple could wind up getting squeezed from the top and the bottom.  The Apple fans will counter with all the reasons why that won't happen, and I will grant that it requires successes on the part of Apple's competitors.  Apple could very well continue to dominate the tablet market, but I think that other big movers in the tech world are too hungry for the tablet market to surrender it to Apple through mediocrity.  The winner of the ultimate tablet showdown: consumers.

That, combined with legacy apps not being available on ARM (that wouldn't be touch optimized anyways) as well as the bad taste that Windows has left with people, not to mention it will be a year before it is released, means Windows 8 has an up hill battle ahead of it.

I'm not sure what you're talking about.  Apple sells more products than any of those companies.  I don't know if you know this or not, but they're the number one tech company.  Just wanted to let you know that, I don't want you making a fool of yourself or anything....  So let me clear this up for you:  all of those companies you have listed above are all competing against each other.  They don't come together on weekends and form the Justice League of Android.  They are all on there own, trying to get their own piece of the mobile market.  None of them even compare to Apple in terms of units sold.  Hell, HTC and Samsung both struck deals with Microsoft, with the latter publicly expressing their frustration with Google.  Meanwhile, Apple passes Exxon.  I'm sure the only thing Apple is worried about is other tech companies *cough* Samsung *cough* stealing their shit.

How is the ipad in a different league? is it because of the awesome camera?   How about the light bleed?   The price maybe?   Or is it the fruit-themed logo?    I didnt' think so.

I think think this is pretty much the perfect device for me, I need a tablet I can take with me when I am waiting for the lady at boring shit, like shopping or the inlaws. I just wish it had an SD card slot so I could watch in places that  don't have wifi. Hopefully wireless hard drives will work with this so you can watch your own ripped media, a clunky solution but the only option.

Either this or spring for a 64gb 3G iPad.

My point: Do you really need a camera? For $199 you might want to reconsider what you really need.

I agree, it took me 6 months to get over the fact that I am paying ~8-15 bucks and not getting the book. But then I read a 1000+ page book on the kindle and the reduction in weight was worth it.

This device is meant for consuming items from amazon...so stop complaining about the device not having a camera for skype or any other complaints...its for this very reason that this device exists...another medium for amazon to reach its customers...

Why would I regret saving $300 over an iPad?  All I want is a color ereader that allows me to surf the web and watch videos.  This looks like the perfect device.

But see 90% of tablet usage is watching videos and surfing the internet which the kindle fire can do just as well if not better (considering larger choice of browsers and flash support).

The other 10% is just a niche market. That said this can run Android apps, so 99% of the most popular apps will be on it.

Why in hell would you even consider an iPad if all you want is a color e-reader in the first place? The iPad is a lot more than an e-reader, but if that's all you want then I suggest the Fire.

The hate-talk against the Kindle Fire is baffling.

"No cameras! No stock Android! No Honeycomb! Too much Bezel!" yadda yadda, etc. It's going to sell extremely well, get over it nerds.

It's going to be the FIRST Android tablet to sell millions, beyond the Galaxy Tab, and people will actually be interested in it. It already has instant name recognition.

Until now Android tablets have been disposable me-too devices. Nobody really cares for them outside the tech blogs and nerd circles.  People want iPads, not Android tablets.

And now they'll want either Kindles or iPads.

The truth hurts doesn't it nerds?

And this is not "your Google's Android", literally. No google services, no google ads, out of sync with the latest version of Android (well even more out of sync than the companies that are trying to stay in sync). Should be interesting, a popular Android device with absolutely no enforced control from Andy & Google...

How is that different that Android on ANY device now?   Google refuses to take control, ensuring device manufacturers support their own devices after launch.   At least with Amazon they have a vested interested in their OWN product, sort of like Apple but with less d00che.

You must not know what happens if you try to use a non google wireless location service on your Android device ;)
(Hint, you can, so long as you forgo the use of Google Maps, the Android market, and any other services people expect from an Android device).
In fact, Andy Rubin himself is in charge of determining whether a device is "compatible" and is eligible for the Google apps.
Bottom line, the Fire is a far different "Android" device from the typical ones (sure, other companies have come out with non-Google Android devices, but those were mostly your $75 kirfs without much sales potential).
Notice how Google was conspicuously silent during and after the Fire release? You're right, Amazon has a vested interest in their OWN product, and those interests have nothing to do with Google's, except that they are leveraging Google's work on the lower levels of the Android OS.

I think this is a great device and so is the Ipad but why are they being constantly compared to each other they are in two different sprecturms of the tablet market.  One tablet gives you the latest's and greatest hardware available at price that is higher because of the hardware specs and the other gives you something similar at the lower end but they still do  the same thing, they both can get you from point A to point B.

While they may be targeting different markets, studies have shows that the 2 primary uses for tablets is surfing the web and watching movies. So while other stuff are nice to have, they are a niche.

Aka, while this tablet may be be targeting ereaders and just be a glorified eReader. It will start chipping into iPads marketshare. Just like how flash cards, cds and internet downloads while are different markets have great impact on each other. or how HTML5 and Flash target different markets but have an effect due to overlap in the market.

So question remains, at the need of the day if all you do is surf the net and watch movies, why may 500$ when you can pay 200$ for the same exact experience if not better.(due to more choice of browsers and flash support)

I thought one of the most popular uses for tablets was baby-sitting your kids; I've seen this all too often.

I agree this will hurt all tablet sales; it will impact Apple the most since Apple is the majority seller at this time.

True, but at same time kids are VERY easy to please, just load up angrybirds or some other game that Amazon gives away free every day and they'll be happy.

Usually the polls ask what the users use their tablet for, not what their kids use it for. But again it still serves that purpose just as well.

the iPad is the latest and greatest hardware available at a price that matches the specs? I have an iPad, and I can tell you now, it was never priced according to it's hardware. Android tablets of the same price point have always had much better/more hardware than ipads...the main difference between an iPad and Android is that iOS is more reliable/effecient/polished than android (albeit more restrictive as well). In terms of hardware (ignoring the aluminum unibody), the iPad is always outclassed by android equivalents.

I love the freedom of my android phone, but it always feel like buggy beta software compared to my iOS devices.

You made good points I can argue with you at all really.  I also agree my android phone does feel buggy at times but I think that is because its running on so many different types of hardware every user gets a different experience, That might be googles problem.  and I have to say IOS is a lot more polished but Apple has had a longer time to polish their OS vs google and they only have to worry about their on hardware so maybe ICS will surprise us all and it will be rock solid.

I've got 3 ordered.  Why?  Because if this is anything like the Kindle 2, it'll be sold out for months shortly after launch.  There's money to be made; enough to pay for the one I'll keep and then some :)

And if not, I've got a great Christmas present for my dad and bro.
