You're right. I was very tired when I wrote that. Actually I meant to write arrogance, and I was looking for a word to mean more along the lines of 'consumes you and makes you look like an ass'.

google+ is done. not even tech enthusiasts use that CRAP. and yes its crap, feels very static and boring when you log in. ghostland of only 1 or 2 statuses of scoble talking about google+... yea that's what I go on a social network to hear.

I don't really see why people talk crap about one or the other. They're all free and you have a choice. I'm mostly influenced by where my family/friends/etc. are (facebook) but overall I enjoy the Google(+) environment.
In the end, it's great to see them competing against one another because we (the users) always win.

If you don't pay for a service you are not a customer, but rather a product. We always lose because they both are just collecting our personal information for selling it to advertisers (and some say even governments). Diaspora will be the next big thing and it will win in the end.

Facebook couldn't care less about your well being. All these enhancements caters to advertisers who actually pay money to surgically target YOU. Having said that Facebook contains Petabytes of otherwise worthless-for-you-but-otherwise-very-harmful-for-YOU content. Anything you said on Facebook can and WILL be used AGAINST you. By your future potential employers, by your present spouse or by your past enemies.
You will NOT be able to erase your past stupidity, remarks, opinions, statements and views.
So close your mouth and move on.

Definitely. It's something i've taken to heart back when myspace was growing. Regardless of filtering who can see your content, the point is someone IS seeing your content and can EASILY share it be it on purpose or mistake. And we all know mistakes happen. That's exactly why everything I post I do so publicly and would never fear sharing with strangers because I know that it can be anyone from friends and family to a possible employer who views it.

Really? Because as an advertiser on Facebook, I don't see how much value in how many times you like photos, individual songs you listen to, or other minutiae. If I target too hard, I'll lose sight of my goals.
Also: set your profile to private and everything after your first two sentences is completely flaccid. It's worked wonders for me.

Sergio A. Molina If you are censoring yourself, its not much of a social network in my opinion... A social network that ONLY allows polite discourse because of fear of reprisal is not something I am interested in. Not everything is meant for the public forum.

What really makes me laugh about the whole thing is how much people complain about either site without even trying them both. This is especially true with the retro-loving Facebook users who scoff at the Timeline videos before their first click.

The question is more about how google+ can win or even truly compete.. it has to be through a clear vision and innovation. At this stage they are failing at just catchup. The features from F8 are not big for a company like google to build but they are not thinking of those.. they need to be ahead of the game.

I was blown away by Facebook Timeline as well, but I don't think there is anything insurmountable in the technology behind it or the design that Google couldn't quickly one-up. But the fact that 800M people are on Facebook and they just got more reason to stick to Facebook will make it harder for Google+ to get traction. People who were complaining about the clutter on news feed with friends and subscriptions mixed up and ticker etc just a few days ago are perhaps now back in the Facebook camp..

Many of Facebook's features are empowered by their massive audience. For Google to simply rip them one for one without boosting their crowd is just going to make them look more desperate. Google+ as-is is completely devoid of imagination, a social network designed by engineers, rather than people who know how relationships actually work.

I agree with you about the pluses of Facebook. But I don't think it's true that Google is more of an engineers' company than Facebook. They both actually have very similar cultures that way. Facebook got a humongous lead in social and so it is now that much harder for Google as the late entrant. But even just a few days ago with some of the not-so-nice changes from Facebook, people had started asking if Facebook is the next Yahoo or the next MySpace, and at times like those it feels like it could still be anyone's game.. But I agree that all of today's announcements solidified Facebook's position and I don't think anyone will compare them to Yahoo or MySpace any time soon :)

N Lawrence Pfeifer I agree with you too. the massive audience impose a high transfer cost from fb to g+. If I were g+ management team, I will find ways to increase audience base rather than adding new functions. With no data & people, functions are meaningless.
In mainland, tencent spends a lot of money to promote their microblog network, with outdoor ad, magazine ad, Star, famous entrepreneur, .... just to make it catch up with Sina Microblog. And tencent makes it. Google should learn lesson from the battle.

Well, Facebook proved they get people better. They still rule general population, and they are capable of moving forward with the same vigor.
Google+ didn't do anything wrong, just their speed was disappointing. I expected full Developer API with some superior features, they provided two basic GETs. I guess the same is happening inside, not enough engaging of internal resources outside of the code.
They need to brainstorm more, abstract more, build massive internal and preferably external community. They need to go much harder if they want to go after Facebook. By now, they feel like they rediscovered traditional Project Management.

the facebook Open Graph API is the biggest threat for G+ because the Web can easily grow inside FB. This was for me the biggest announcement today. The timeline feature is really nothing but UI re-work...
so.. G+ folks.. if you want to stay on top you will have to open G+ entirely and let the developers do their job. They will work for you and bring tones of new ideas.

I don't understand why people take sides with these social networks as if they own the company or own stock in the company... it's cool to express your opinion, I don't knock any of you for doing so, but why get so heated about this topic? Google+ is in its infancy, only time will tell if they will even be a major player, at this point they are testing the waters, this project could be killed if the execs at Google see no future in it. Google is a search engine company with lots of money, that's what's dangerous about them... look how they've impacted the smart phone market with Android and have become a formidable competitor to Apple's iPhone. Facebook is a monster in the social media world... for now. People are either excited about the new features or pissed off, in the end, this is a business- there's entertainment value...See More

Erick, love competition in the space, but I think that FB is currently too well entrenched. When I ask friends and colleagues, almost all of them solely or mostly use FB and not G+. I think the real competitor is probably 2 kids in a garage that will figure something out to be the MySpace to Friendster and Facebook to MySpace.

New features or interface could lead disaster to most users, more importantly, you might think Google+ is pathetic but I seriously take into account to learn new services. Well besides, you can judge who will WIN the entire social mass perhaps. In a nutshell Google+ is for GEEKS and a LEVELHEADED personality, while FACEBOOK is for you.

Google trying to pwn Facebook with a social network is just like Facebook trying to pwn Google with a global search engine... They should focus on their core strengths and that is being and staying number 1 in what they already are.

Chris, the problem with your logic is that our concept of search has changed since Google first launched.
I think that the real reason Google are so desperate to enter into the social networking space is the threat they face from Facebook.
Think about 800million people all using your service, some religiously, others adhoc - but that's still 800million people! All you needs to do is add a search bar to you home page and you've just stepped into the number two position for searching online - behind Google (and it's subsidiary Youtube).

Chris Watts: "Facebook is JUST a social networking site." ... What do you mean? JUST a social networking site? It's the biggest social network in the world and has 750+ million users ... Even your comment comes from Facebook.
And, of course, everyone has his or her own opinion about G+. But if you ask me, G+ isn't really healthy competition for Facebook. It's more a failed attempt to compete.

While I have a Facebook account, I usually only post maybe once a week and check Facebook maybe twice a week. I am far from being a Facebook junkie like many people.
I do think Facebook is far too entrenched and Google+ is likely out of the running.
In regards to Facebook, I think they are trying to be everything and I am not sure if that's really the best thing. I guess they feel they need to do this as it allows them to monetize the beast to the fullest.
I am uncertain weather Facebook users really want or need all of this added crap.

Facebook starts to scare me away! They want to know everything I do at any given Time more precisely for my ENTIRE LIVE! For what? Not for my sake! But so they can sell my Profile for more! If Google+ will ride on the wave of giving me more privacy but still giving me these awesome features of connecting me with my friends in even better ways I go for Google+!
Bottom Line: Facebook's announcements where more tools to scrape more data! Google announced tools to connect me better with my Friends!
