Only works if you have both Sprint and a CitiBank MasterCard... pretty weak launch.

itll be hyped up by the neckbeard-having android geeks, and then killed 5 months later. see: wave, aardvark, knol, buzz, google+, orkut, picasa, google earth.

John Fernandez Seriously?? You didn't even name products that have been killed. Picasa? Google Earth? Killed 5 months later? You might want to go do some homework.

there will be a virtual prepaid credit card that can be used for people that don't want a citibank card. prepaid is the way to go.. just to be safe for now. can't wait to finally use this!

If they would use a solid form of identification, preloaded credit card wouldn't be needed.

So now if you misplace your mobile phone, you just lost your entire wallet, credit cards. Way to go Google. As they say in France: Tres Stupid!

Pretty sure it would be password locked if you wished. So this is actually safer than just losing your wallet....

jonathan, its not true. u just wave your phone at a thing and it charges your card. google wallet is a thief's best dream come true, and most peoples phones are NOT locked by a password.

John Fernandez Actually, you're 100% incorrect.

The battle is far from over and GW is nowhere near to being the major player in this space. Google Wallet's secure element resides on the handset, which is different from Carrier mobile wallet initiatives. Google Wallet is designed to be interoperable, so as to attract more partners, but so far its olive branch has not been met with reciprocal affection from other players in the payment ecosystem. If ISIS Carriers (Verizon, T-Mobile & AT&T) mandate that any and all mobile wallets must work through ISIS to function on their carrier networks, Google may be forced to modify Google Wallet so as to work with a SIM based secure element.
Also Google Wallet’s launch outside of U.S may run counter to European mobile operator’s current business model where they charge fees to banks and other service providers for putting their NFC applications on SIM cards owned by the Telco’s. As Google attempts to court European banks to be part of the Google Wallet initiative, this could deter European mobile operators from adopting Android handsets if Google continues to unilaterally control the embedded secure element. Even though Google Nexus S supports SWP (Single Wire Protocol) that allows a mobile operator to put the secure element in the SIM, Google has opted not to enable this capability in Nexus S.

Mobile Wallet has not succeeded anywhere in the world and can't think of a reason why should Google's initiative succeed. The reasons of course have to do with the human psyche. Google as a technology player has not demonstrated in the past that it has an insight into human decision making. More so Google is better known for refining a successful model rather than establishing a success of a struggling model.

I've never heard of a mobile wallet solution before, care to share any links?

The only reason a Mobile Wallet doesn't exist in S. Korea or Japan is because they primarily use rfid tags attached to their phones instead (basically like having a thick mini credit card dangling from the phone).

Nathan J. Brauer Thanks for the clarification!
If Google can distribute those stickers they were talking about, I'm pretty sure people in those regions would switch to Google Wallet (or some other NFC solution)

The Peets at Polk and Broadway already has a sign for Google Wallet as of yesterday (September 17th). I asked the barista if anyone had used it yet and she said one person had tried but it didn't work.

Isn't it just NFC and it works with any tap&pay?
Reply · · September 18 at 7:21pm

Yeah, it's just NFC but I assume it requires server-side integration. Most stores don't yet have NFC readers.
Reply · · September 19 at 12:35am
Giles Douglas · Google
Waynn Lue Pretty sure it doesn't require anything server side. Just an NFC terminal.

It is surprising that Google is going for such a seemingly limited scale official launch! There's a major constraint on virtually every front, whether its the hardware dependency, handset constraints, mobile network dependency, a limited retail network or single credit card issuer. All this given the upcoming ISIS platform, I am sure Google has more in store for us than current expectations - otherwise it will be a major disappointment.

their smartphone which then requires me to match it to an expensive reader. When 2/3 of my transactions are with Ultra Small Business, and they don't have expensive NFC readers, this sounds like a hype to sell their smartphones. Why not a Bluetooth that would interface with ALL wireless devices that are BT enabled?

So my Bionic doesn't work for it... that is a very weak launch considering all the hype that's been around Google and Motorola specifically.

Chris Butler : Even a sarcastic comment it has value. I have never lost credit card, but there is chance that i can loose mobile. There should be easy anti-theft solution embedded in wallet. like it works with only voice of user. I am giving idea free of cost!!

I am not quite sure of the commercial viability and business model of the product. Too many large players trying to make money off a small ticket retail transaction.. just does not make sense...being limited to just one handset and also limited number of retailers equipped to use this will also not help.... at best this will be a bigger scale pilot launch and nothing more......

I think Apple will win this game. It makes sense for them to hold off on an NFC chip for now and let google burn through money and credibility (as it relates to mobile payments). Apple already has huge numbers of payment profiles via iTunes all they need to do is release one simple native app (iWallet perhaps) and boom.

I can't wait for Sparkbase's new app PayCloud to officially launch at the end of October. I'm not sure what the Google app will look like but the PayCloud app is pretty sweet. Check it out at paycloud.com.

Would be really useful after it supports Visa and MasterCard from all issuers. I wish the iPhone had a NFC chip. If Apple really wanted to be ahead of the game, they would install the NFC chip in all iPhone 4s and activate it with a surprise iOS update!

So what's the plan? Are we just going to give info about everything we buy to an advertising/retargeting giant?
